There is a confusion over two temples with a very similar name. There is a temple with ruins near Kinniya, Trinco called Welgam/ Velgam vihara. But the access road is called "Vilgam vihara rd" in the maps. There is another very recently rediscovered ancient stupa called "Vilgam Vihara" near Seruwawila which is now being renovated by Mahamewana Buddhist Monastery.
I am referring to the Welgam vihara near Kinniya in this review. If you are coming from Trinco, the Google maps shows directions from Trinco - Nilaweli road. But in December 2023 we were told the access road from that side was not in good conditon, so we took the Trinco - Anuradharapura road. Once you pass Kinniya (coming from Trinco) there is an access road shown in the maps as "Vilgam Vihara rd". There is an arch and a name board so you won't miss the turnoff. The road was in good conditon and ends at the temple. But if you come from Nilaweli side you will also come across Periyakulam lake and "Gehenu gala" (a woman turned to rock as per folklore) before getting to the temple.
There are some lovely old ruins to to the right of the new temple, restored some time ago but sadly left to get back into the jungle. (We went in the rainy season, so the place was rather muddy and overgrown, it probably looks less overgrown in a dry season.)
There is a tiny museum to the left of the new temple. Nothing much there except a few stone inscriptions.
The new temple tells a sad story of the Civil war and advocates reconciliation. The chief prelate was very nice and friendly. He came and spoke to everyone who visited while we were there.
We also met the most friendliest 🐈 at the ruins! The fellow was all alone there but looked well fed and looked after. So we assumed he was the temple cat and had come here after a tiff with the numerous dogs at the temple :) He was so friendly and loving and followed us everywhere. So unusual for a cat. While he may have contributed the rating here ;) the ruins are well worth a visit if you are in Trinco and has a thing for anything ancient.

I was able to observe the rich culture of Sri Lankans and their medical remedies. I was able to see "Medical Boat /Canoe", medicine grinding spots, where our traditional doctors treated our community with their won knowledge

Free entry. Not a sole in sight. A group of monkeys live here and they were fascinating to watch. They playfully bounded about the ruins but didn't come too close for comfort. We saw a lizard on the wall too. An excellent place to see animals.
The ruins are really interesting although there is no information on site, so do your research into the history of the temple before you visit.
Its well worth a trip.
On Trip Advisor, the temple is showing on our map as in Trinco, but it's around 10km ish drive away - worth noting when planning a visit.

Man zahlt keinen Eintritt.

There is no accommodation with the Temple premises. It is mostly a day visit from a nearby town
