Offering great views of the surrounding Itasca State Park. Particularly beautiful with the Fall colors. Make sure you are not scared of heights and it's quite a work out to climb to the top. Most easily accessed from Wilderness Drive which is a one way road traveling around the State park in a counter clockwise fashion. There is a parking lot and a short hike on the Jeanne Lake Trail. Alternatively, you can take a longer hike from Douglas Lodge parking lot but the extra effort isn't worth it. $7 entry fee to the park unless you have purchased a $35 annual pass. It is open only seasonally and check daily hours of operation as well.

Aiton Heights Fire Tower is located inside Itasca State Park. It requires a $7 daily car fee or $35 annual pass to enter. Once you are in the park, there are dozen's of things to see and do. Mississippi Headwaters is the marque stop, but this one should not be overlooked.
It's located about halfway around the one-way nature drive. There is parking at the trailhead. It's a flat easy 1/2 mile walk out to the tower. A few informational signs are posted where various buildings used to exist when this was an active tower.
The climb up is simple and you are contained within the tower itself. Out of shape or disabled people may still make it up if they go slow and rest. There are handrails all the way up with landings every 10 feet. As you go higher, the wind is a factor. You can feel it moving the tower.
The view is worth it. We were there in June and everything was green and beautiful. About halfway between the tower and parking is a small pond. There were a pair of Trumpeter Swans with babies swimming around.

We couldn’t go up since it was closed for the season but there is lots of cool info about it at the bottom and the trail getting to it was a fun little walk. Will be back in the summer to climb it!

The short walk to the fire tower, with its great views, is probably the best short hike at Itasca - assuming you're there on a good day. We were there on a windy day with the fall colors in full swing, and it was gorgeous. The tower sticks up well above the forest canopy with 360-degree views much better than anywhere you can find on the ground in this flat country. Would be fun to visit at sunrise or sunset.

I recently took 8 HS students to Itasca State Park, and the highlight of the trip was the Aiton Heights Fire Tower. Four out of the eight students had a slight fear of heights, and the wind that day didn't help. With a bit of encouragement, they all made it to the top! We were rewarded with breathtaking views and an awesome breeze to cool us down on a hot and muggy day (especially after walking the half mile to the tower). My students and I highly recommend all who are able to reach the top.

The 1/2 mile walk to the tower is not a difficult one, and if you're not afraid of heights and are willing to climb all the stairs to the top will reward you with multiple great views along the way up as well as from the top. There are hand rails all the way, but there are no actual walls, so you are continuously aware of the height as you climb. Definitely worth the climb!

This is a bit scary for those afraid of heights, but well worth the climb. Note that they limit the number of people allowed to climb at a time for safety sake.

It's a very easy hike except if your joints aren't that good. The fire tower offers excellent views and photo opportunities. When we climbed the tower, it was too windy. The top can hold around 6-7 people. I should admit it was a bit scary as I felt the whole tower swaying a bit from its position. You can see the tiny water bodies within Itasca scattered here and there. The best views would be in fall though when the oranges and browns are in peak

Another fun Itasca State Park activity. Great views from the top. Two things. I don't recommend this activity if you are afraid of heights. Also, don't go up there on a windy day even if you are not afraid of heights. Just sayin

We went with our 5 year old son. there was a small walk to the tower, and then climbing up it. Both my husband and I are afraid of heights, and we did fine (by fine I mean we did not pass out, but I was shaking once we got 5 or 6 flights up). Only 6 people allowed on it at a time, and if it is windy you feel it at the top. We took it slow, and had no issues (except for the fear thing) and our son can't stop talking about it. This would be beautiful when the leaves start changing. Will definately climb again!
