We only had about half an hour to spare, but enjoyed the chance to walk around the (National Park run) lock area and to get views of St. Anthony Falls. You can also see them from the stone arch bridge just downstream, although we didn't have time to go that far.
Parking nearby was a bit difficult on a sunny Saturday afternoon when we visited. I don't think there is any free parking, and even the paid lots were mostly full, but eventually we found a spot. The falls themselves are quite wide but not all that tall, although they are a pretty unique sight in themselves right in the middle of a major metropolitan area. I don't think these are must-see if you're visiting Minneapolis/Saint Paul, but we were happy we'd stopped by to see them.

The falls are lovely, along with the stone arch bridge, lock and dam. There was a tour guide there who gave us a bit of an impromptu tour which was nice. Unfortunately there was a lot on construction work going on on the other bridge which spoilt the view a bit, but otherwise a great place for a short stop.

I really enjoyed walking around the falls. The National Park Service has Rangers onsite on limited days. They were there and answering questions and giving tours. Worth the time.

I went on a walking tour or from downtown. I juit I decided to cross the stone arch bridge into Saint Paul. Along the way you get absolutely beautiful views of these waterfalls. They are not the most dynamic. But they are historic and there is a lock system for raising boats up-and-down next to the falls. That is a very interesting aspect of this attraction.

There is a LOT of water moving quickly here, and on a nice day this place is definitely worth a walk. You can walk out on the lock and dam, walk across the Stone Arch bridge, and overlook the old Mill area. You can take it all in 30-40 minutes and it's very picturesque.

Maybe back in the days of Native Indians and early explorers these falls had a beauty about them, but since the 1800's they have basically been industrialised for the Minneapolis Mill industry. As such even today whilst they are quite impressive, as any powerful water movement is, I would not classify them as 'beautiful' as many famous waterfalls are, (Victoria, Niagara and even the small Minnehaha Falls also in Minneapolis). This whole area that includes, Mill Ruins Park, St Anthony Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge is certainly worth a visit though as it makes for a nice walk with interesting scenery to take in and history to educate oneself with.

You can view these falls from both sides of the river. And do that! You get a different perspective. These historic falls (and the locks around them) are well maintained and provide insight into the early history of the Mississippi.

I learned that the St. Anthony Falls are substantially the only waterfalls on the MIssissippi River. Interestingly, geological conditions caused them to move many miles upstream and almost disappear before the Army Corps of Engineers stabilized them 100 year ago, and they have been helping Minneapolis generate power since then. The Falls themselves are pretty, but they are not especially large or impressive.

Nice view of the falls and a fun easy walk around on the trail loop. Paved and easy to do for people not in the best of shape.

We were here May 20, 2021 and everything is still closed. Did walk over the stone arch bridge and got nice pictures. Learned bout how the falls were saved and the use of the falls to generate electricity.

Hello,
Asking for the best steakhouse in downtown Minneapolis to go eat at???
And places to go visit there. Ill be there next weekend...

You have so many great options in Minneapolis it is hard to go wrong. If you are open to other cuisine, be sure to check out some of the Thai restaurants. Delish! As for steak, I'd stick with Manny's over Ruth's Chris.

Hello Chapmans5,
On the east side bank of the river, crossing over from Minneapolis city side, there is one of my favorite places, called Wilde Roast Cafe. They have a website that will give you details of their hours, menu, etc. There is parking along Main Street or a block behind there is a parking ramp with underground tunnel access to establishments on Main Street. They also have an outdoor patio which is under an awning. I've seen people there dressed very casual and also dressed up. Save room for their gelato!
Let me know if you have other questions.

would like to visit this July, is there any parking near by
Skrevet 17. juni 2015
Hello 67foxy,
There is a parking ramp located at:
2nd Street South East, Minneapolis. The cost isn't too bad, I'm usually paying $5.00 for the time I am using it. There is also an underground tunnel directly from the parking ramp to Main Street where you can access a few restaurants (Wilde Roast Cafe is my favorite) and then walk across the street to get to the Stone Arch Bridge.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have other questions!
