We took the day cruise to Kettle Falls from Rainy Lake Visitor Center with the National Park Service and it was a fantastic experience. The captain, park ranger aboard and crew were all utmost professionals, extremely knowledgeable and kept the whole day very fun. We would highly recommend it.

Visit the National Park, specifically Kabetogama Visitor Center and Ash River Visitor Center. Worthwhile to visit both, really a different feel to both. The staff at both were excellent and helpful.

Voyagers is a VERY UNIQUE National Park where you have to get on the water to experience it. If you go on the National Park Service’s web site they have canoe rides and boat trips. The canoe pictures are from the Rainy Lake Visitor’s Center, the ranger did an amazing job. The actual boat pictures are from the Ash River Visitor’s Center, the day trip to Kettle Falls via National Park Service Boat, you have to book these tours in advance on their website. Kettle Falls was an amazing special place, I would LOVE to stay at the hotel.

Bring heavy duty bug spray and a bug net for your head/hands.

The bedroom pictures were taken at the Kettle Falls Inn.

This is a unique National Park, in that you need a boat to see it all. The views are stunning, the fishing is great. It's like being in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, only you can take your power boat. There are lots of reservable campsites on the many, many islands within this park.

As national park junkies, we definitely wanted to visit this place. However, we couldn't find anyone in the Twin Cities who had been there although it's only 4.5-5 hours. It was clear that most of the park is only accessible by water. Truthfully, we probably would have been better off doing a houseboat or canoe trip. However, we went over MEA break, right when things were starting to shut down. It was still beautiful colors and we could do enough! We stayed at Thunderbird Lodge on Rainy Lake and did a boat tour from Voyageurs Outfitters (highly recommend). We got some hikes in (5 or so) but it was hard to find hiking trails that were accessible by land. The views were beautiful and it is a unique place. It was a bummer that almost all visitor centers were closed...I wanted my national park stickers! Luckily, they left out a stamp at the Ash River Center so I was able to get that at least!

This park is different from many other National Parks in that it's mainly water based. We did use our car to visit a couple of the Visitor Centers, and we did several land-based hikes reachable by car, along the shore of the lake. The park is probably best seen as a full expedition, but we enjoyed the glimpses we got by renting kayaks for a day to explore Lake Kabetogama, and by taking a National Park boat cruise on Rainy Lake. This park may not be as traditionally scenic or as easy to view as others, but it is definitely unique and worth a visit.

Voyageurs National Park is a great park in the NPS system that highlights our country's amazing lakes as well as the early, cultural history of our country when French Canadian explorers worked with the native Ojibwe people to establish one of the first global industries in North America.

With that said, YES, the park has some deficiencies, and it may not rank as your or my favorite park. However, those in no way diminish the incredible natural environment protected and showcased by the park. First thing to understand before you go: Voyageurs is a water park with nearly 50% of the park being water primarily in 4 lakes, with 3 Rainy, Namakan and Sand Point Lakes also being an international border and Kabetogama Lake being solely American. It is so much a water park, the traditional National Park Sign for pictures is not on a road but rather the lakeshore where Kabetogama and Namakan meet at Ash River VC. However, what you may not know is of the 50% land in the park, only 15-20% of that is accessible by car. If you are going to see this park, you will either need a boat or to have preplanned a boat trip.

Before going, I booked two boat trips to the Kabetogama Peninsula so I got to spend some time on both Namakan and Kabetogama Lakes. The rides on the lakes were a great way to see the park and boreal forest, but also a great show of the wildlife, seeing 5 bald eagles. One of my trips was to see the Ellsworth Rock Gardens, which a quirky treasure within the NPS. I also got to stay at Kettle Falls which was a real treat, and one of the view places you look south into Canada. With that said, the weather, wind and rain, conspired against me to prevent my North Canoe paddle and kayak rental at Kettle Falls. While those paddles would have enhanced my visit, I still enjoyed the park.

As for deficiencies, the park does have some. First little of it can be easily accessed by car. This is one reason there is not a lot of great hiking, AllTrails rates this as the least hiking friendly national park you can reach by car in the lower 48. Still, there is one great hike from the Ash River VC, Blind Ash Bay Trail, see my post in Ash River. Another real challenge for the park is if you go in the summer, the bugs, especially mosquitoes, are really bad, literally 20 on you as soon as you step out of your car or any building. Finally, there is a lack of signature spot or feature that the memorable parks have. Case in point, the canoe is probably its best signature. Finally the home of the park is challenging with the prior page in some obscure town. I felt Tripadvisor needed to show this from the HQ city so more people could find it.

However, these are merely some challenges that in no way prevent you from having an awesome experience here. The isolation allows for great wildlife, bears, moose, wolves, beavers and eagles. While I did not get deep in the woods to see those animals, the lakes were amazing for birds, eagles, pelican, loons and more. Again, this may not be your favorite park, but that will not stop you from having a great time and experience here.

We've been to 20 national parks, this was by far the most disappointing. Only a water park. There are 10,000 other lakes in MN....not a big deal. Terribly few and short hikes which are mostly paved. The "story" that this park tells is of the very brief time period of the white voyageurs and about......beavers. Very little about the native Americans before and nothing about the forced removal of native people onto reservations. Shockingly white-washed story. Did the whole park in 1-2 hours. No real opportunity for biking either. Don't waste your time unless you are one of the locals who go here to fish. Rangers were very nice. Visitor centers are small because the story being told here is so small and unimportant.

Lots of water here -- bring your boat! We just drove and hiked around the visitor centers and some lookouts. The scenery is awesome. Proves that Easterners don't have to go all the way out west to see a national park. The wilderness here is great! Very friendly visitor centers.

We made a quick stop here hitting all 3 visitor centers in a late afternoon. What an amazing park. We knew going in it was really a water park and we didn’t have the time for a water visit. We checked out as many views as we could and are planning a return visit when we make our way to Isle Royale in the future.
