If you like the Bues, there is lots of history here. My wife and I enjoyed the visit and might do it again.

Nice little free museum located within the Hazlehurst train station. Worth a quick stop if in the area. A lot of information on musical influencers from the area and throughout Mississippi. Separate display areas for rock, blues, country, classical, gospel, and jazz, including some multimedia displays.

Should be so much better. It is a crowded, dusty, cluttered collection of pictures, records, musical instruments- all covered in dust. The 3 monitors were not working- the manager said they had to be reset (from the storm 3 days before!!) Signs everywhere said do not touch. Worst of all no music was playing anywhere. The displays would have been sooooo much better if short pieces of the artists music were playing at each of the stations or in the background. In short, it has the feeling of a mausoleum museum. Make it come ALIVE, that is what music is all about - hearing and feeling the magic of the music- jazz, blues, opera etc. represented in this display. Younger people have no idea who these people are or what they sounded like.

On the way to New Orleans, a stop at the Mississippi Music Museum is called for.

A part of the Delta blues trail, Hazlehurst is the birthplace of Robert Johnson. The museum highlights him but also has separate areas for rock and country.

You enter the museum on the Mississippi Walk Of Fame, small tiles naming music artists that hail from Mississippi, blocked off in sections for the blues, rock, classical and country. I was amazed at all the people that began in the state.

The museum is located in the old Hazlehurst train depot. There is no charge for entry but donations are encouraged.

There were exhibits for each genre with album covers, photos and some personal items owned by the artists.

Give yourself about an hour for the visit. There were road signs on I-55 but not much in town. It didn't show up on my Garmin and we had to use the address to find it.

138 Ragsdale Ave.

If you like music history, the museum touts itself as the birthplace of American music.

A Doctor of Music, Jim Brewer. who wants to share his love of music and his small hometown with everyone has turned the old train depot into a small gem of a museum, focusing on the state of Mississippi's musical history. It is a self-contained museum having four stations that play the music of various musicians, including Robert Johnson, Howling Wolf, Elvis Presley, Jimmie Rodgers to mention a few. As you walk past the stations, a screen comes on and the music plays of that era. There are other antiques to view that have been donated, and old records and CDs to purchase. You can sign the guest register and if you are from another country or state, there is a guitar to be signed. Admissiion is free, as are the maps of the music trail through the state. Hospitality is abundant and there is Brummis' Yummies across the street if you need a great cupcake!

Our visit to the MMM was a spur of the moment decision. I saw the signs on the interstate, and followed them to the museum. From the outside, the museum looks small. But, on the inside you'll find displays that discuss the contributions that musicians have made in virtually all music genres. Here you find displays about people who Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many others drew inspiration from. The gentleman who was inside when we entered, was a treasure trove on the history and the influence Mississippi musicians have had on modern music. By the way, they don't charge admission to enter the museum.

Nice little museum in the Historic Hazlehurst Train Depot. Covers all Mississippi music genres and artists including blues legend Robert Johnson who was born there in 1911; opera soprano Leontyne Price; country pioneer Jimmie Rodgers; and other musicians. Has a small gift shop inside. The museum collaborates with the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame at the Iron Horse Grill in Jackson.
