I had to backtrack from Clarksdale to Indianola to see this because it was closed on a Monday holiday. It was well worth my time, and driving through the Delta again was amazing, Highway 61 revisited.

Just an amazing experience! The exhibits are very well done, and not just because I'm an ardent fan. The intertwined history of his early years in rural Mississippi and the segregation as he was first performing are extremely well done. Put it in the list of things to see in the Mississippi delta region.

Excellent museum retracing the life of blues genius B.B King. Very good for immersing yourself in music at this difficult time for people of color.

We have always heard about B.B. King, but it was such a great visit to the museum dedicated to honoring the King of the Blues. Obviously, his music talents took the world by storm. People from all walks of life love his music. Upon entering the museum, there is a cafe to the left named after all of his guitars, Lucille. You can buy souvenirs, get a cup of coffee and chat with the staff. The first stop was to see a short video/film of B.B. himself. After that, we walked down the hall that had "everything" B.B. King. It's nice to know he didn't blow all of his earnings on useless stuff like cars, jewelry, etc. There were two cars and his tour bus on display. The Grammy Awards and other achievements are displayed. B.B. King was truly a big part of "The Blues" music.

This museum is very well put together and a great learning experience. We had heard many good things about it and it did not disappoint! The staff was friendly. It is self paced and we enjoyed that.

A great tribute to BB King including his burial site. Lots of interesting, historical memorabilia about BB and his music. Also can include a visit to the nearby Ebony Club which is also now owned by the museum. A little out of the way but we’ll worth a detour especially if you are a music fan.

This was an excellent museum. While it told the story of BB King, it also meant you learnt a lot on how people lived and also about other musicians along that journey. His sheer professionalism shone through .

Riley B. King was born to an impoverished family in what today is known as the Mississippi Delta, a lowland area between the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was cotton country, segregation was the way of life and the Blues was born. King grew up on a sharecropper farm and later drove a tractor. Times were challenging. His parents divorced and his mother moved them to his grandmother’s farm some distance away. First his mother, then a few years later his grandmother died but King stayed on alone as a child for several more years. At 12 the local minister where he sang in a gospel choir bought him his first guitar. King was self-taught.

In addition to storyboards, artifacts and photos, the Museum had several excellent films with original footage and music (and seats, thank goodness) that showcased his development. He had heard about Memphis, the center of early Blues at the time, went and exploited opportunities that led him onto a radio station that served the Black community. His career progressed from there. As his success grew, he acquired a nickname that led him to change his name from Riley to B.B. King.

King is regarded as one of the most prolific guitar players of all time. He had a unique playing style and technique (especially his phrasing) that made him a legend in the guitar community. He is also known for introducing variations outside the traditional music 5-note scale, adding faint notes and an unusual vibrato effect. His innovations influenced guitarists in every other music genre, not just the Blues.

This Museum was different from any we’ve visited before. We heard a lot and learned a lot in a comfortable, modern, informative setting. We were glad to have come.

Two full hours of amazing information. A museum about a single individual is a little bit outside our normal routine, but this was great. The museum is, of course, biased towards B.B., but you still feel like the title “King of the Blues” is deserved. Should you visit? Yes. In fact, go out of your way to visit if you can. The only critique one of us had was that there may have been too many videos. They’re not required viewing as much of the information is contained elsewhere in print so make that call for yourself. But regardless, you should still go.
