We absolutely loved this NT property. A stunning main building with beautiful grounds and the old ruined farmhouse. Bess of Hardwick was an amazing woman and the story of her life is incredible as dont forget, it was 1527! The stone stairs are worn from thousands of steps over hundreds of years and are so atmospheric... the tapestries are also absolutely amazing. One of the best houses we've been too. Good cafe, staff and setting

Hardwick Hall is definitely worth a visit as it is an amazing place. However, there are a few points to bear in mind before visiting. The first one is that roads to the Hall are narrow country lanes with passing places. It is certainly not very nice for large vehicles. The second one is the distance from the car park, which is free to park, to the Hall which is through the gardens and is quite a long walk. If it is raining you will get soaked. So, once into the Hall the architecture and splendour of the tapestries can be enjoyed. There are some lovely rooms to look round and there is no time limit. Indeed, if you want to exit the Hall and have a drink, lunch, etc, you can always go back inside later on. So, I think a visit for many hours is a good idea. There is also the ruins of the Old Hall which is near Hardwick Hall. I loved the visit and I am very pleased that I went to see the Hall. We had a free day pass which was great but it looked like a day pass was £19 per person.

In our opinion Hardwick is one of the jewels in the Crown of national trust properties
Every time we visit we learn something new.
Some of the best and knowledgeable volunteers we have come across.
Great grounds and the old house is worth a visit.
Good parking, lots of places for food.
A must visit place.

Coming from Chesterfield but living in West Yorkshire for over 30 years I'd never visited Hardwick Hall before so my husband & I decided to visit on our 3 day visit to Derbyshire at the end of August. We had free tickets from a newspaper for the National Trust so we saved about £38 on entrance ! The hall is imposing from the outside with it's famous mass of windows. The lady who gave us a 15 minute talk about Bess of Hardwick on the front porch area was very informative. We understand the interior of the hall has to be kept quite dark to preserve the tapestries, they are massive & very detailed & they are the main feature of the house. My favourite area inside the house was the room with the portraits of Queen Elizabeth 1st & Mary Queen of Scots. I was a bit disappointed with the gardens, there's a big, colourful border round the lawns in front of the hall & some big hedges with Roman type statues in but nothing much else only parkland with cattle & sheep, trees & some children's activities, no fountains or maze or rockery like Chatsworth gardens. We had a look at the ruined Old Hall, my husband climbed the steps up to the top which had a fabulous view. The Old Hall is virtually an empty shell. We had a cup of tea & I had a scone at the cafe but we would have taken a picnic if we were staying longer. Overall it was pleasant to visit for a couple of hours but the gardens weren't that impressive, we enjoyed it but wouldn't return.

What an imposing house the size of the windows was just a sight to behold.. couldn't wait to get inside to see the tapestries and boy what a treat..I had read other reviews saying it was dark and dingy but I could not disagree more...the house was sympathetically lit to protect the tapestries and anyone with an ounce of sense would have realised that. The size of the tapestries was jaw dropping and we watched a video of the tapestries being conserved and what a long process that was, with a huge team working on them to put them back to their former glory for us to view them as they would have looked all those years ago...
Well worth a visit if you enjoy architecture and tapestry...

Absolute must see place, it is so well preserved and fascinating for anyone that likes history. The guides are so friendly and knowledgeable and they are in the grounds and houses with a fountain of knowledge of which they are passionate to share.
We attended a 15 minute introductory talk by Pete on Beth Of Hardwick. He was so animated and engaging which made it really interesting.
I can't praise the staff enough from the guy on admissions to all the volunteer staff. It inspired us to join the national trust.

Go back in time to the Elizabethan age with a visit to Hardwick Hall, you really do feel like your stepping back into that period of history, amazing house built by a woman & full of period tapestries and pictures, most of the house is open to visitors, early furniture too, a must see for any history lovers, one of the best National Trust houses in my humble opinion, lovely gardens too.

What a fabulous heritage property! A real jewel in the NT’s crown. I’m fascinated by Bess of Hardwick, so to finally visit the halls (yes, there’s two!) was a tick on the bucket list!
Spent a few very happy hours exploring, and enjoyed tea and scone in the cafe. Wonderful to see conservation work taking place too.
Highly recommend!

Hardwick Hall and the Old Hall are incredible atmospheric buildings. The talk/tour guide give an overview of the story of Bess before we went in which was very interesting if not a bit too long. We had a walk around the lovely gardens before heading to buy food at the cafe. What a disaster. The queue was out the door. You can't buy a pre-packed sandwich. Instead I had to wait 20 minutes for a very disappointing dry bread roll with a slice of cheese, a sun-dried tomato, a few green salad leaves and a cherry tomato cut in half. It cost me £7. If it hadn't been so busy I would have taken it back. It was appalling. How can you get it so wrong? At busy times of the year you need to be able to walk in, pick up a sarnie and drink, and go.

Not sure that we recognise the place desribed by another recent review!
We were welcomed by staff and volunteers at various points of our visit and
provided with a map of walks through the grounds. Admission (for which we used a free voucher!) included a visit to the atmospheric Old Hall and we climbed the cira 120 steps to enjoy a splendid view.
The Hall itself is draped with extra ordinary tapestries and we watched a video showing the lengths taken to carefully restore the Gideon Tapestries which are of international importance. The kitchen provides a contrasting insight into later life 'below stairs'. The Herb Garden and borders were colourful and well kept and a beehive stands beneath one of the trees in the old orchards. We enjoyed our picnic sitting on one of the garden benches (deck chairs also available) but chose not to use the busy restaurant. There is a NT Shop. Plants and second-hand books are also for sale. All in all, plenty to fill a day given good weather. Having travelled forty miles to visit we felt the journey worthwhile and may well visit again.

Do I get free entry as an English heritage member? It says on the English Heritage website to just now show our cards 💳, but just wanted to check before we travel

As a EH member you only get free parking. Hardwick Old Hall (EH) was closed for renovation last time I went. The New Hall is NT members only free of charge.

Do I get a discount at the new hall with my English Heritage Membership
Skrevet 23. mai 2022
No i don't think you can as the new hall is National Trust.
It's only the old hall which is English Heritage which last time is being renovated at the moment so you can't go in.
All the other is open but National Trust .
Hope that helps. Xxxx.🏞🏞.

Is there a play area here & if so, is it open again?
Skrevet 4. mai 2021
There is no specific play area with swings etc but there is an adventure trail
Skrevet 8. mai 2021
This is a remote location and gives you little choice except for a private taxi or thumbing a lift.
