I do absolutely love an old church but we didn't get out of the car for this one! It was pretty but nothing special really. Don't go out of your way.

This church is only a couple minutes walk from the Richmond stone bridge so is worth a visit. It is quite a majestic church and inside is beautifully decorated.

St John's Roman Catholic Church was built in 1837 and is still in use today. Strangely, there is just one grave just outside the front door of the church. It belongs to Henry, the son of Irish nationalist rebel Thomas Meagher. Young Henry passed away in 1852, aged just 4 months old. This tiny grave reminded me that in the 1800s the mortality rate of infant children was often as high as 50% passing away before their second birthday.Headstones date from 1832 in each of the Richmond cemeteries, but many of the graves are unmarked convict graves. At the congregational burial ground, the headstones all face south, and not east, as is the usual practice.

Perched high on the hill above the Coal River and Australia’s oldest bridge, sits Australia’s oldest still functioning catholic church, St John’s. And what a beautiful building it is. The stained glass windows were probably the highlight for me, but everything here is great.
It was opened on 31 December 1837 and the blessing of the foundation stone by Bishop Polding was the first formal act of an Australian catholic bishop.
This is not a humble early colonial building, this, like the bridge has been built with pride and care, as evidenced by the face that we can still enjoy it today. It’s not all original though; the current spire dates from only 1972 and is in fact the second replacement spire.

We noticed the church on the hill behind us from the parking area near the bridge and decided to pay a visit. The church dates to 1836 with the foundation laid by Australia's first Catholic Archbishop, John Bede Polding. Completed and opened for worship in 1837, further additions were made in 1858 to cater for the growing Catholic community. The existing spire was installed in 1972. The building is Gothic style, buttressed walls constructed from sandstone and with corrugated iron roof and the copper clad spire. The church was open and I was able to have a look at the interior. A simple place of worship. The timber cross was carved by Manfred Weil in 1963, he lost his life in the 1967 Tasmanian bushfires. Nice stained glass windows. There are two inscribed marble tablets containing details of the church and pastors who have ministered there. The graveyard has headstones dating to the early 19th century. At the side of the church there is a memorial grave site to an infant boy who died in 1852.

The Church was locked up when we visited so couldn't enter. Built in 1836, it is considered to be the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Australia. Located a short walk up the hill from the Bridge.

リッチモンドは古い時代の面影を残す町並みが見られるとのことです。
このセントピーターズ教会もその一つだと思います。何しろオーストラリア最古の、ローマカトリック教会ですから。質素な建築物のようですが､充分に教会としての尊厳が感じられます。そう、路面の敷石にも古き良き施設だと感じられます。
内部は派手では有りませんが、窓にはすべてステンドグラスが用いられています。正面の分は、三人の聖人だと見受けますが、左右側面の８っの窓の分は、抽象的で何を表彰しているのか、全く分かりません。
しかしそのステンドグラスは教会の礼拝堂としての雰囲気を、充分に醸し出しています。
美しいです。
また教会のバックヤードは、墓地になっています。訪れている人は見かけませんでしたが、まだ新しい献花があちこちに見受けられました。古い教会だといえ今もなお信者が祈りを捧げる現役の宗教施設だと思いました。

In the cemetery I found a gravestone of a woman from 1813 - they do not come much older in Australia. The story behind the boys grave at the entry to the church is well worth researching - it is a hell of a story.

The architecture of this place is absolutely beautiful. Very well kept and definately worth the visit. Just a hop and a skip from the bridge.
