Don't be confused to see that it is now called St Thomas of Canterbury. Same saint. Each week evening it has Portuguese Mass, and the Sunday afternoon Mass is very pleasant. Can be reached from anywhere in Sydney with public transport as it is right next to Lewisham train station.

교회가 너무 아름다워요. 마음까지 평온해지는 시간이었습니다. 이렇게 아름다운 곳에 있으니 저절로 기도하게되는 시간이었어요.

This church has been beautifully restored both external and internally. Attending a Tridentine service is so uplifting. Well worth a visit. Easy to get to by train. Step off the station at Lewisham and you are there. Can’t miss it.

The Church after having been closed for most 2017 has now reopened and has been magnificently decorated - well worth a visit!

This old church is now undergoing professional restoration of its exterior. The stonework and roof require a lot of work. Ibis perched in the nearby palm trees watch over the workers' efforts.
The attractive interior of the building remains in use. A local tells me it is popular for weddings.

This Catholic church is old by Australian standards and deserves to be better known. If it were in a fashionable suburb I'm sure it would attract more visitors, larger congregations and better maintenance efforts. Christian worship began on this site in the 1840s. (Prior to European invasion the area was the territory of the Cadogal indigenous people. Many of these people died from introduced diseases.)
The parish's official founding dates back to 1851. The church was dedicated by the Benedictine monks to the martyred Saint Thomas Becket, once an archbishop of Canterbury. The church you'll see now was erected in 1888; its predecessor no longer stands, having been demolished to make way for a school. There are some nearby graves of early Benedictines.
The exterior stonework of the church and the slate roof need work; there are scaffolds and safety fences adjacent to some parts of the building. The interior is decorative and surprisingly light in its tones.
English-language and Portuguese-language congregations use the church on Saturdays and Sundays, and the church is open 1-7pm on weekdays for private devotions.
The church is in a cul-de-sac directly beside the Lewisham train station and not far from bus routes. On-street parking is usually available.
There are no nearby eateries.
