We stayed two nights in the campground at an electric site. It was quiet with very few bugs! The sites are level but closer together (no trees or bushes separating from neighbors).
There are basic showers and bathrooms plus laundry.
The clear river running through it was beautiful, great to cool off in and fun to watch all the people trout fishing.
Wish we could have stayed longer but we will definitely be back !

Most people go here for trout fishing. There's a trout hatchery onsite. Visitors can purchase food to feed the trout. There are two types: Brown and Rainbow Trout.
I came to Montauk State Park to hike and tour Montauk Mill. Unfortunately, they were not doing tours on Sunday. My recommendation to all visitors is call before you go if you want to do the mill tour. There's only a 2-hour window for the tour, on Saturday if you are lucky and the naturalist isn't at another park. The situation is due to limited staff.
I hiked several trails. The trail to the spring is where the Current River begins. The blue-green water is crystal clear. On all the trails, there is a plethora of wildflowers which also means there's a lot of butterflies, mainly swallowtails.
My favorite trail is the Montauk Lake Trail where I saw wild minks, a first for me.
I should also mention there is Steelman Lodge where you can spend the night. I can't comment on accomodations since I didn't stay there.
I did, however, eat at the Steelman restaurant. I had a cup of lasagna soup. It was excellent. Service was prompt and friendly. I ate for under $5.00. A bowl of soup is slightly more.
They do serve Missouri wines as well as other alcoholic beverages. There's also coffee, ice cream, soda, etc.
The gift shop has many reasonably priced items.
This park is in a beautiful Ozark setting and I highly recommend it. The nearby towns of Salem and Eminence are also worth visiting.

We weren't sure about the facilities so we stayed in Salem versus trying the Lodge. The next morning we drove to the park and wished we had persisted in getting a room at the Lodge. They have a large restaurant in the Lodge. Next time we'll plan better.

Many camping and lodging spots. SO MANY trout in the river (sadly there were tons of people also). Many places that were handicapped accessible fishing. Trout hatchery and springs to look at. Would definitely go again.

My family and I visited Montauk recently and enjoyed our time there. Due to it being in the off season the restaurant and other ammenities were not open, but we enjoyed seeing the springs and other scenery.

Nice place to fish for stocked and plentiful trout. This park is appropriate for all ages with opportunities to fish still and moving water.

My family and I have been going to Montauk for many years and we love it there. I just don’t understand why they don’t make some improvements. The restroom and shower areas look the same as they did when we first starting going. They are dirty and not maintained. For those of us who use Verizon for our cell service, we are virtually disconnected from the rest of the world which is not the fault of the park but if their WiFi was decent we could at least communicate with outside. We were there recently camping and I couldn’t use the WiFi even though I was standing beside one of the access points. During our recent visit I also learned that they were considering doing away with selling firewood and ice at the entrance to the campground. I really hope they reconsider.

The park has been closed for an extra 2 1/2 months and you would think they would use the time for improvements. We were the first campers of the season and the fire pits were full of ash and debris. Some had trash in them. We were told the bathrooms were painted last fall, but no other upgrades. With social distancing and covid 19 we were Surprised the Bathrooms still only had one soap dispenser and hand dryer for 3 sinks. Bathroom floors are dangerously wet with standing water every time they clean, which makes a muddy mess when walked on. If anyone else is in the lodge store you rarely can get six feet apart. Half the time employees were carrying their face masks. Really hoped for improvements and it was actually in worse shape this year.

If you’re looking for state park in Missouri, Montauk is a worthwhile stop. Trout fishing, camping, cabins, a motel and restaurant are choices for everyone. Recent updates and renovations haven’t taken the rustic out of the area.
The restaurant will cook the trout you caught or it’s on the menu, or there is a diverse menu and buffet which has great catfish and hush puppies to brisket sliders, pasta salad and fresh cobbler.
There is a nice store and lunch counter to eat or have really good ice cream in waffle cones.

Do they have available wifi in the rv area so you can work from your camper if you need to?
Skrevet 21. mars 2020
Yes they have free wifi in RV camping area, but not the fastest. You can connect to ATT wifi or use cell phone as wifi point since ATT has cell tower nearby with strong signals.

Why can't my children ride their Hover board in the park around camp sites? Why would one have to have a driver's license to ride one in the park?
Skrevet 4. juli 2019
Just a possibility. Have you checked the park's liability insurance restrictions? Due to inconsistency of terrain and the proximity of steep inclines/declines and also the presence of fast moving water I would hope this is in response to the overall safety of the park's visitors. Just a thought.

Being a State Park they keep very close eye on any weather related matters.
Skrevet 1. juni 2019
When we were there we saw cats in campers and dogs on leashes.
Skrevet 19. april 2019
There is a nice motel on site. I do not remember seeing cabins.
Skrevet 11. april 2019
I am sure you already have your answer. This is a state park so camping is available with electric only. There are nice level black top pads under the trees. Very nice area.

How is the water level for this weekend
Skrevet 7. september 2016
With the rain we've gotten the past few weeks, and it is raining and thundering like crazy today, I'd expect the water level to be up. We're about 10 miles from the park and go there often, but I've not been there in the past week. The water is clear, shallower up by the spillway enough so that anglers who are fly fishing can use their waders and go out about mid waist level. There are some deep drop offs though, just to the left of road going in to the park, that I'd advise not trying to step out into. Actually, going into the water w/o waders is prohibited. Check the local forecast before you drive here. (zip code 65560) From what I just saw on the weather channel, it looks like this line of thunderstorms is forecast for all week into the weekend. This rain today doesn't look to let up today or tomorrow either. Sorry that I couldn't help more.

Any suggestions on cabins ? It looks like they have several types to choose from. We've never been to this park - but considering it for next fall. Also - is there a playground for children there?
Skrevet 3. november 2015
Cabin 7 and 8 are right next to the stream, AWESOME.
Playground is 30 feet away across little bridge.
Cabin 4 is hidden away but super cool, old one from back in the day but has verything you need
