We have just had the most magical experience at the castle .. the tower is stunningly beautiful. Santa and his elves are fantastic and so engaging with the children. Definitely had the magic of Christmas !!

It's a real shame that the grounds are not kept all that well. We were a little confused as we were driving down a small road nearby and we all of a sudden saw what looked like massive castle ruins.
Its not sign posted very well which made us think that maybe it wasn't open to the public but after closer investigation there was a small walk around that you could do.
This had not been maintained at all, we pushed through nettles, brambles and bushes to get around the first part.
Pretty sure there is a slaughter house behind the ruins due to the fact that it sounded like Daenerys Targaryen had birthed her dragons in there which all sounded a bit spooky.
Worth the visit

To properly enjoy this castle you would need to go to an event there (such as a wedding) or one of the occasional touts. Otherwise, you have to look at the ruins from the public footpaths that skirt its perimeter. The corners are intact but there are no remaining walls but you do get to see 'inside' because of that.

Stumbled upon this when we were attempting to find the pub, children enjoyed exploring, and also their first experience of “kissing gates”.

This castle that was so significant in the history of the north is in private hands and so can only be viewed from the footpath surrounding it.
Although we have visited Sheriff Hutton many times, this was the first time that we had taken the walk around the castle. We didn't find the best way of starting the walk - if we do it again, we will begin in the churchyard. The gate to the path is behind the church and you need to follow the trach to the right to reach the castle; the castle cannot be seen at that point. It is worth being aware that some parts of the path can be muddy even on a nice day but it is a very easy walk.
Even though the castle is very much a ruin, it is still impressive and we enjoyed the natural surroundings as well.

The ruins are still large and amazing. Yes you can't get near them as they are private and fenced off but just size of what is remaining is astounding. The whole castle will have been majestic. The perimeter walk was lovely and tranquil. Just a perfect stroll with the family.

I past this castle on the way to Pickering castle, not previously having eve known about it.
Unfortunately access is very restricted as the castle is on privately owned ground. From what I understand the castle and associated farm were put up for sale a year or two back – not sure if its ben sold. To be honest it’s something English heritage should be buying to safeguard its existence.
There are signs saying you can view by prior arrangement -which is ok if you have planned your journey but not if you are just passing. The ruins are fairly extensive and you can see quite a lot from the road and the pathway which goes around the grounds (viewing from some distance away). Could be a big asset for the village.

Hello all. Would some kind person who may know the answer, please tell me how long (approximately) it would take to walk around the circuit walk that goes around the perimeter of the castle? Thank you.
