Beautiful leaves. Exceeded my expectations. If you go in October, try to go during the week to avoid the crowds on the weekend.

We went on a Tuesday from Conway West. We downloaded the Action Tour Guide app ($15) ahead of time which narrates your trip based on GPS coordinates and recommends stops. The Sabbaday Falls was a highlight for us. It's just a short .3 mile hike to see very scenic waterfalls. Park on the side of the road if the lot is full. Be sure to use your Parks pass or buy a day pass ($5) as rangers were out writing tickets at the Covered Bridge stop. The Swift River is low this time of year but the fall color was fantastic.

Do NOT waste your time!! It was bumper to bumper traffic & it took us three times the amount of time to finish it. Once you get on there’s no getting off until the end. None of the “scenic overviews” were worth the hassle of going 5MPh for 3+hours. There is beauty everywhere in New Hampshire & Vermont. Don’t get caught in this tourist trap!

We were traveling through New England during leaf-peeping season and decided to take the Kancamagus Highway through New Hampshire. I wasn't expecting much, as it was early in October and not time yet for peak colors. Boy was I wrong! We saw spectacular color all along the way, even if it wasn't peak yet. We enjoyed stops along the way to hike and take pictures. All in all, this was the highlight of our leaf-peeping tours and would highly recommend it!

I took the 'Kanc' on my way to Franconia in early October. It was a gorgeous day (it felt more like August) and the foliage was beautiful. I took lots of photos, several of which I posted on the Tripadvisor Kanc Highway Lookout sites (Sugar Hill, Hancock, Pemi River, etc.).

It’s 10/6/24 and already past peak, IMHO. Awful year for fall colors. Extremely disappointing. Dull, dull year. Don’t bother. Waste of time. God awful traffic.

We were lucky to be there at a time of peak fall colors... truly amazing. We stopped at all of the scenic overlooks and Sabbaday Falls -- all fantastic.
A few helpful hits:
1. Regarding one of the scenic overlooks -- the CL Graham Wagman Overlook. There is a small additional parking lot directly across the street from the main lot, which comes in handy when the main lot is full. It is not identified well -- it looks like a side road -- but it available for public use (unless you are driving an RV or bus).
2. It's a 0.3 mile walk to Sabbady Falls from the parking lot -- uphill for a good part, but navigable for people of all ages. There are several benches along the way for those that need to take a break. Lots of step around the falls, but very well maintained.
3. For some of the sites in the park (not the overlooks), there is a fee ($5/day) to park in the adjacent lot. You can pay for this in cash at the lot, or buy a pass online. The lot at the Sabbaday Falls does require payment of that daily fee. However, there was a large number of cars parked along the highway in the area, which did not incur this fee.

Our trip to New England was a mixture of my two favorite travels, history and nature. However, our time in New Hampshire was mostly nature and one of the best ways to see it is this highway. The road is 35 miles between Lincoln and Conway running through the south end of the White Mountains. The road itself is a beautiful setting; however, what also give it the #1 spot for the state is the number of great stops along the highway. Due to time constrains we were only able to visit Panoramic Overlook and Sabbaday Falls.
While our visit says September, it was early September with little color showing. I can imagine now in late September the road is even better. Still, we greatly enjoyed our time in the nature of New Hampshire, and this is a great road to sit. I will say I think I-93 through Franconia Notch is impressive but second to this road. I highly recommend you drive both and you will many of the best natural sights in the state.

Very nice scenic drive. We stopped at the Saco Ranger Station to get a map and talk to the Ranger. We stopped at Albany Covered Bridge, Rocky Gorge Scenic Area and Sabbaday Falls. All were worth the stop for the views! Especially take the walk to Sabbaday Falls! We saw many wild turkeys along the way. We were short on time, so we did not go the end of the highway.

We inserted a long stretch of this scenic road lengthening our route and we are definitely satisfied. Although we were not in the foliage period, the road has beautiful landscapes. And then, suddenly, we see two moose on the side of the road eating: a meeting we will not forget!

Is there drinking water available along the highway at any of the lookouts or at the lower falls? I'm thinking of biking the highway and I probably won't be able to carry enough water to make the whole trip without refilling bottles. Thanks!
Skrevet 8. august 2023
You can bring one of those water filters that hikers use. Some will attach to Smartwater bottles. I know there is a spot about half way that people do stop and get water.

Is this a safe drive? I am fearful of any roads that have areas without any railings where there are steep DROP OFFS ... areas where cars can go off the road. I've seen too many of these in other areas, sadly marked with crosses for those who lost their lives.
Skrevet 17. mai 2022
I don't recall any bad areas, but don't remember any guard rails either. I let my 15.5 year old, learning to drive, drive the whole thing while it was snowing. No problems. It is a scenic drive, so lots of twists and turns, but most are driving it to see the scenery, so nobody was rushing. Plenty of places to pull off, take pictures, very relaxing drive.

Can you please let me know as to what route they are talking about from North Convey to Lincoln?
Skrevet 3. oktober 2021
Conway to Lincoln is Route 112 that is the Kancamagus highway.

Hello...I plan to travel from MA, which is an allowed state, for a one day trip to the Kanc. Was wondering the restrooms are open now?
Skrevet 3. oktober 2020
We didn't notice any but it's a little over 30 miles long with Lincoln at the west side and North Conway at the eastern side and they both have facilities. Good luck with the colors.

I agree w the other 3 Right now there r vibrant leaves. True that many came down in the storm but there r many trees that are still turning and are beautiful.

ADVICE NEEDED! This will be my first road trip and I need any advice you are willing to give! My goal is to drive through some serene areas filled with fall foliage, and I’d like to get “the most bang for my buck” so to speak and drive through as many areas as possible! My mom and I are planning on going the second week in October - any ideas about where to start and where to finish? Also hotels and favorite coffee shops/restaurants would be wonderful too! We want to spend 4 days driving around different places and looking at all the leaves. :)
Skrevet 24. august 2020
The entire Mount Washington Valley area will have beautiful foliage this time of year. Starting in North Conway, I would go up Route 16 North to Route 2 over to Jefferson. From Jefferson take 116 south to Littleton then Rt 93 south to Franconia then on to Lincoln. From Lincoln go over the Kancamagus Highway, then Bear Notch Road over to Bartlett. plenty of great places to stay in North Conway with lots of restaurants to pick from.

Hi! What dates were you in the Kancamagus Highway area?
Skrevet 31. januar 2020
Let's see we have been on the Kang
in during the spring, fall, and in the winter.
We usually prefer to travel in the quieter seasons.
For decades we of course had to travel during the
summers and school vacations when I our children
were small. But the children were always well
behaved and respectful.
Skrevet 27. februar 2020
I'm going there in 2 weeks - starting Oct. 10th for a week. Hoping to see the leaves in Peak Season.....have they already turned? Just turning? Thanks!
Skrevet 27. september 2019
Try emailing the local forestry association. They would be your best source of telling you which of their many forests have leaves changing colour. And which colours are more prominent in the many different parks. It should be a spectacular scenery. Great timing for an artist.

IF you try to do the 32 miles towing a 5th wheel that large, be very, very careful, obey speed limits, watch signs and take your time. There are many sharp turns and hills. As the driver of your vehicle it is quite tempting to look at everything around you, due to the beauty of the surrounding scenery. For your safety keep a close eye on the road while driving. A few spots along the road can get a bit narrow. Also keep an eye out for wildlife on the roadway.
Skrevet 14. juli 2019
Sometimes you see moose; sometimes you don't. There are no special spots to stop and see them. Please be careful while driving on the Kancamagus Highway as moose can be very dark in color and unlike Deer, the eyes of the Moose do not reflect light from headlights, making these enormous animals even more dangerous to drivers. Never attempt to chase a moose or any animal with your vehicle. Moose are generally very gentle but can charge your vehicle if it feels threatened. If there are baby Moose nearby, use extra caution as a mother Moose will be slightly more aggressive if you get too close.
