Good History
okt. 2021
Not many employees offering stories about houses and places of interest in the park. I say park because the museum is kind of a park. It was kind of a slow at the museum though. I would recommend it because of its historical nature, but it is not a necessity.

Splendid Strawberry Banke
sep. 2021
The scenery was beautiful - enjoyed going into each of the houses. We enjoyed one woman who derssed in a colonial costume- Each house had something interesting to show. There was one guide in each building to explain things- it was very interesting

Good period houses
sep. 2021 • Par
Overall, the historic houses and museum were good. They do capture the time periods well and the houses are interesting. It does seem like something was a bit lacking or the direction or focus was off. When compared to other historical areas like Colonial Williamsburg, this place comes up short. However, it was worth a visit.

Many original historic buildings from a bygone era
aug. 2021
Even though we are still living through a pandemic, Strawberry Banke had several of the buildings open and some roleplayers were in the village, as well. If we were allowed to go inside to tour the building, there was a flag posted outside. Every day they hand out a visitors guide indicating what is open and where the costumed characters will be. We especially enjoyed talking to the skilled craftsman in the Dinsmore Shop who was making barrels. The Shapley-Drisco House, divided into to different eras - l790's on one side and 1950's on the other was interesting because it showed the differences in furnishings and lifestyles for each of those periods of time.
We spent several hours walking around and enjoying what this museum had to offer.

Wanted a bit more...
sep. 2021
My hubby and I wanted to visit some of the historical places in Portsmouth; naturally Strawberry Banke was on that list. There weren't as many buildings open as we would have liked and only a couple of folks in period character. What we saw was interesting and the welcome docent was quite entertaining while sharing info.

What we were most disappointed by was the lack of mention of any African American people in the village - no matter what their position or role. We visited the African Burying Ground and memorial and walked by some of the other homes on the the Black Heritage Trail. As an interracial couple we had hoped to hear more about what part African Americans played in Strawberry Banke's history. Perhaps the docent's welcome would be a place to point out buildings, significant people and contributions made by POC.

We were both impressed by the way the buildings are partially rented to local people as a means for keeping the village going financially. A great idea.

Very quaint & historic village
jun. 2021
First of all, let me say that it is difficult to write a review of a place that is closed due to the virus. However it is possible to walk around the village & see the outside of the buildings. The buildings are very quaint from the outside. We were lucky to get a handout from outside the visitor's center that gives a short description of each building. There is also more information on the Strawberry Banke website. Fairly easy to find, there is also onsite parking. I had no idea of all the history in Portsmouth. There are nice gardens at the Aldrich house & a park is right across the street. Even though it was cool to stroll along the lanes, I would like to visit again when things are open when I can get a better feel for what it has to offer. Visitor Center is closed, but pamphlet is outside. Don't miss Daniel Webster house.

Flashback in time to an old New England Village
jul. 2021
Fun family visit and a nice history museum that is low key. Lots of walking and the old buildings are cool and historical. I suggest spending 2-3 hours here and get assistance from the tour guides to learn more of the history of Portsmouth.

A Nice Stop for Us
jul. 2021
A very nice stop for us. Very few buildings were open, but, we enjoyed walking around the historic buildings. The gardens are beautiful and the views of the historic harbor are excellent.
If they had a historic walking guide, or, a marked walking tour this historic spot would be even better.

Interesting stop
jul. 2021
We stopped in town for a break from driving and ended up taking a tour of this place. This place has an interesting history and it was nice to see a community come together to preserve history. At the time of our visit masks were required inside the buildings, but not outside and if there were several people at one house, they asked others to wait a few minutes before entering so you could socially distance. For the houses in which "characters" were present, you did get a fun little backstory. and I do highly recommend listening to these folks as it makes the house much more interesting to look at. We very much enjoyed the war time grocery store- such fun to see and next door to this with all the old war time advertisements. Not all the houses were open when we came as they are doing some renovation. We probably spent maybe 90 minutes here walking around, but you could spend longer. This was a neat stop and if you like history, I recommend it.

Meh.

They have some interesting buildings and gardens. They don't do the buildings justice explanation-wise and a lot of them or parts of them are off limits.
