This house is on a beautiful piece of property - right on the water with plenty of space to have a picnic and enjoy the view. We were not able to take a tour since it was too late in the season. However, we did take the loop trail which was not very interesting but came out to a view of the water that was worth it. They need to better mark the trail from the parking lot since it was missing a lot of yellow blazes.

Especially for those interested in history, this official residence of the first colonial Governor of New Hampshire is well worth a visit, if one is in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area. For a fee of $5/person (for non-NH residents) one can get a guided tour of the house. The house is set on the Piscataqua River and offers a good look at the winding river. The tour of the house gives one a good idea of the daily life of Gov. Wentworth.
About 2 hours is plenty of time to visit this attraction.

Water view, well-kept historical house, and "nature path" make for a nice destination trek. Free parking. NH seniors no charge.

We found this hidden gem by accident on the Internet. We visited Portsmouth many times in the past where we love to stroll around Strawbery Banke and enjoy the many shops and restaurants the state's second oldest city has to offer.
It was a wonderful surprise to find this hidden jewel on Little Harbor Road. There is a cool shaded walking trail of 1 1/2 miles around the property with a tidal pool and a view of Sagamore Creek, We were fortunate to have a tour last Saturday with a extremely knowledgeable guide named John. He gave us a detailed history of the mansion and a fascinating look at the many rooms in the home and the interesting people who lived there since the colonial days.

It was a pleasant walk and we enjoyed looking at the house and the views around the house of the water were breath taking. We didn’t tour the house as we’d gotten there about 10 minutes past the hour and they said they only do tours hourly. There wasn’t enough to do there to chew up almost an hour so after touring the grounds and taking a few photos, we walked back to our hotel.
Note if you have small children and are thinking about walking the property, there’s some sort of animal poop all over the place. We had to walk in a bit of a maze to avoid it and it’s all around the main house down to the water. Could end up being messy if not careful.

The mansion is a very historic structure, being the only surviving residence of a Royal Governor in this country. Benning Wentworth was NH's first Royal Governor and ruled NH from the mansion beginning in 1753. The mansion is simple and stunning, beautifully situated on Little Harbor. It has expansive grounds, with several lilac bushes, some benches, and a small riverfront. The public is free to explore the grounds, picnic, and walk the nearby trails. Guided tours of the mansion are available in season and free during their Lilac Festival in late May. This is one of my favorite homes in Portsmouth that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is an interesting tour of putting houses together and then adding on more rooms later too. If you have time, it is a nice visit.

Have to say we didn't get to actually go into the house, but the grounds and views make the trip worthwhile all by themselves.

Went out of our way to get to this historic setting. The building has great history as it was the home of the first Governor of New Hampshire. There is no entrance to this place and no contents. A waste. Maybe the guided tour on the hour would have made it better?

We went here after seeing it from the water on a harbour cruise the previous day.
The site is so beautiful, we could have spent all day just watching the birds and the river.
Our guide was friendly and welcoming, he told us so much about the history not only of the mansion but of the ruver, Portsmouth and their shared history.
The mansion itself is a little sparce inside. Maybe needing a little investment to spring clean it. However, it is a unique and fascinating building and we wouldn't have missed coming here.
