The Ridgewood Schoolhouse Museum just reopened after being closed for the COVID-19 Pandemic and is only open from 2-4pm on Sundays.

They are currently showing the "A is for Artistry" exhibition and it is a very interesting collection of local art, photography, toys and historical objects. There is a very interesting collection of turn of the last century photography from its creation to the end of the Victorian Age and how it progressed from portraiture to the modern photography. There is also wonderful displays of glassware and toys to enjoy as well.

The nice part is that there are volunteer docents around to discuss the exhibition and the different displays and get an idea of what is being shown.

It is an interesting little museum.

Don't miss the "Here comes the Bride" exhibition at the Schoolhouse Museum, the home of the Ridgewood Historical Society. The exhibition is on the history of bridal dresses and the donations are all from the towns people of Ridgewood, NJ.

There is all sorts of dresses and accessories that brides would have used, invitations and even cake toppers. The museum was beautifully decorated for the event and there is some interesting items for the grooms as well. Remember to take the docent tour.

The museum mounts every interesting exhibitions so watch their website for more updates.

This is my second year taking the Annual Cemetery Walk around Halloween at the Schoolhouse Museum and they are a lot of fun. You have to schedule yourself for the 7:00pm tour when it gets dark. That is the best one.

The tour takes you all around the large cemetery in Ridgewood, NJ and at each stop, there is an actor who portrays a prominent member of the Ridgewood community and discusses their life. It is all done by lantern and it can get spooky in the cemetery at night.

The best part is at the end. They have cider doughnuts and fresh apple cider waiting for you and then it is an evening of ghost stories and conversation with other members. Try to snag these tickets early as they go fast.

This is done every Halloween.

Short but very interesting and informative visit.
The guide helped a lot. There's an amazing amount of material, arranged very thoughtfully in this small space.

Don't forget to leave a donation!!

I went on one of the cemetery walks by the Historical Society of Ridgewood and it was very interesting to learn of the early families of Bergen County, the development of the county during the Revolutionary War and the part people played in being a loyalist or a patriot.

The current exhibition on early dress during the Victorian to the Depression, "The Thread of Life" is very interesting and you can see the changes in the mood of the country before and after WWI.

But what brought me here this time is the interesting cemetery walks and the residents who lived here and their relationship with the church and the community. How were these tombstones made and the growth of the church and the influence of the community changed everything.

Don't miss the cemetery walks at Halloween at night. They are the best!

We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of items in this small museum and the professional quality of the displays. The guides were excellent and we appreciated the informality of their presentation. I was impressed by the cult of mourning during this post Civil War period, from the clothing and accessories to the photos of the deceased children. Visiting the museum was well worth the trip.

The Schoolhouse Museum is an interesting little museum that will not overwhelm you with their exhibitions and their tour guides really do give a detail tour of the museum.

'The Thread of Life" is the evolution of the dress of the era from the end of the Civil War to the Great Depression and how it all changed with the Wars and the Industrial Revolution in the United States. Most of the items are local and give a interesting history of the town.

It was fascinating how the concept of marriage and death changed so much between the Wars and the Great Depression to modern times.

Also, visit the Reformed Church next door along with the cemetery for some flavor of the local environment.

Wonderful old schoolhouse with accompanying cemetery, The exhibitions are interesting with tours led by informative and dedicated volunteer guides. As the schoolhouse is small, you may want to take additional time to walk through the cemetery on your visit. Enjoy!

The Schoolhouse Museum is an interesting little museum with very detailed exhibitions for the size of the museum. They know how to mount their exhibitions without it being over-whelming.

Their current exhibition on the Revolutionary War to the 60's is a nice way to see the transcending of time and how things really don't change even with the passage of time. The artifacts that they show are very interesting especially since most are from their small collection from the community and private collections. It is shown in a very organized way and really reflects the communities of Bergen County.

It is great museum for locals and tourists who used to live in Bergen County and even from the NYC. It is an interesting place to see how quickly the passage of time even in the last 100 years has seen the changes in the town and the community at large.

The people that work there have a lot of pride in the museum but I wish would shut up and let you look at the exhibition in peace. Give yourself at least an hour and a half to walk the exhibitions. The museum is only open on certain days.
