An open door to the local history of northwest Bergen County. This museum is on a few beautiful acres of property. It encompasses house, barn, outdoor kitchen, and a furnished one-room schoolhouse. Great to visit for families, not only individuals. The majority of the indoor rooms - furnished with period pieces - are open to the public and staffed by volunteers who are familiar with the history of the house and the area. Upstairs bedrooms showcase toy/bear collections, quilts, and historical items of the rural farm days. You really get the feel of the rural days gone by.

I visited the Hopper-Goetschius Museum estate for the Northwest Bergen History Day tour and what a nice time I had on a gloomy rainy day. They had lots of activities and the volunteers were really enthusiastic about me visiting.

In the barn, the ladies were demonstrating how to spin wool and make clothes. There were displays of farm equipment and winter transportation that would have been used on the farm. In the little school house, there were displays on turn of the century school rooms and artifacts from Native Americans some found on the property.

The main house had volunteers in all the rooms explaining life on the farm for both families and how things were not modernized until the 1960's. The main house has all sorts of interesting decorations and furniture. It is also so well organized.

To end the day at the museum, in the Smoke House they were making homemade soups and corn bread and biscuits. Perfect to warm me up on a cold day and it was really good. The historical society here is very creative and keep you very busy when you come to visit with interesting activities. Please visit again in the summer and especially at Christmas time.

The Hopper-Goetschius House is historic pre-Revolutionary War home of one of the oldest families in Bergen County, New Jersey. In the first week in December, they have a holiday open house where the home and grounds are open for a Victorian Christmas event.

There was a blacksmith working her craft, a school house having a series of games for the kids, the outside open kitchen they were preparing fresh popcorn and chestnuts for everyone to eat and there were a few outside displays on the grounds and places for people to talk.

Inside the house itself, the home's living room and dining room were decorated for the holidays with a tree and decorations, music was playing in the Victorian music box and there was homemade cookies and cider in the kitchen area, which dated back to the 1700's. The refreshments were delicious and the fresh popcorn outside was a treat.

There were tours of the house and games outside and the weather was a clear sunny day, perfect for the event. The house is only open at certain times of the year and has wonderful special events especially during the summer.

Please check out their website under the Upper Saddle River Historical Society.

The Hopper-Goetschius Museum is the home of the Upper Saddle River Historical Society and is the former home of the Hopper and Goetschius families. The house was built in three different sections, so there are a lot of hidden panels and stairs to climb. Don't miss the hidden door in the kitchen to the mysterious second floor and the trip to the basement.

The house is 'as is' when the last resident left the house in the 1980's and still has the vintage furniture and knick-knacks of the family. The grounds have an outhouse, working outside kitchen and many historical buildings from the surrounding towns that were going to be knocked down.

The barn is loaded with old farm equipment and vehicles like sleighs and wagons from the 1800's and there is lots of gardening things from a time when this was a working farm and rest stand.

The house is open only certain times of the year so check the website for more information.
