The road and views are amazing, the people are friendly and the food was amazing. We will certainly return. This was a one night scout, next time we will stay for 3 days.

We rode Adventure Bikes into Die Hel.
I was on a 1200 GSA.. no problem.. we stayed right at the end of Die Hel.. (about 70km) from the turn off... 2 hrs ride.. with stops for pics..
Road is okay except they were grading it so that section was a bit tricky for the heavy bikes... i survived.. beautiful scenery, a definite must to check out..
Strictly self catering.. so be prepared.. we stayed at Bo plaas.. Hannes huis.. very nice...
Bad fire through there just over a year ago.. so lots is burnt..

Im glad we experienced Die Hel.

You would need to decide why you are contemplating a visit in the first place. An interest in geology or history would be good reasons, or maybe just to enjoy the experience of getting there. Once there, there is not much to do, other than to enjoy the peace and tranquility, the absolute quiet and pitch black nights when no moon is visible. There is no wifi, no mobile data and precious little electricity. The museum is interesting and there is a shop which serves light meals, bottled fruit et al. The road to Die Hell is a long and winding one, bumpy and rough in many places. Sedans are not suitable. 4x4 or high clearance vehicles with tough tyres only. There are some fairly steep inclines/declines and sharp drops offs, from the road to the valleys below. Once there it is recommended to spend the night, just to get the full feel of the place. It's very hot in summer. The scenery from the road is great but not as good as Swartberg pass nearby.

This is an epic ride on an adventure motorbike. The views are amazing and the solitude and respect for what the pioneers were able to achieve by traversing this road with horses, oxen etc is humbling.

Unfortunately the valley is very bleak as a result of the devastating fire about 2 years ago. However the accomodation was out of this world and the small restaurant and shop is more than adequate. The beer was cold and the hospitality top class!

We drove down to Die Hel on Saturday mid morning and back up early Sunday. The drive itself is a fantastic experience. We did it in a Pajero SWB and I was very happy that we had the 4x4 availability on the trickier patches.....low gear and centre diff locked for more control. 75% of the route is easy to traverse (slowly). The most difficult part is the last 15 minutes near Die Hel. Steep, lots of twists and sheer drop offs.. Requires full concentration and will scare any passenger with vertigo.

We had cold beers at the restaurant, served by a very pleasant owner and then on to Vaal Johannes cottage at Boplaas. The road on to Boplaas is flat, mostly an easy drive and rocky in places. We also had to cross 2 streams and a river (not deep).
The cottage was very comfortable and clean....much better than we expected.

On the way down and back we came across a group of cyclists, some motor bikers and a few other vehicles. Nothing to really worry about as long as you don't meet a large vehicle on the narrow bits.
A full 2 hours each way....don't try to rush it and stop often to admire the scenery.

This was one the most amazing experience we had. The Gamkaskloof pass was realy special. The oasis we found at the en of the kloof and stayed over was a jewel in no mans land.

No truer words than "its the Journey not the Destination" the 70 kms dirt road with its many twists turns ups and downs is breath taking and you might be lucky enough to see some game. Bird watching paradise if you have the time. Then into DIe Hel where you step back in time and experience what life must have been like for the families. Gamkaskloof is a special place its a tough journey to get there but once you are there you will never forget your experience ..

Taking a step back in time! Sleeping in a beautiful stone carved cottage with just silence as a companion. Delicious supper and breakfast in a tranquil setting. Such a pleasant surprise and experience. Beautiful scenic albeit scary road but so worth the trip

A two hour drive down to the hell, a camping site within the mountains. If you arrive at the entrance there is still 13 KM ahead. We didn#t do this. A 4x4 is esential to hit this road. Very dusty and the last 3 KM very narrow when you go down the hill. Interisting to read the history of this place. We did this after the Swartberg Pass, 2 hous down and 2 hours back, quite a bumpy ride. Think twice if you are up for this!
