Tons of pelicans and turkey vultures kept us entertained. The camp sites in our loop were spacious. We were surprised to find working showers in the bathrooms.

Cool state park that has two sides to it. There are some trails that lead to some really cool rock formations. Looked like there were plenty of campsites as well.

My husband and I spent a Wednesday morning at Sumner Lake State Park. To reach the state park, we turned on NM-203 from US-84. There is a US veteran memorial rest stop on that corner. That was a nice place to stop. NM-203 started out being fairly flat then as we neared the state park we were surprised to see hills and canyons. That was refreshing. First, we enjoyed walking around Raccoon campground and Shady Side campground below the dam. There were many trees, tall grass and small river (or creek). Part of the road in Shady Side was very muddy and looked impassable without 4-wheel drive. There was no one camping at either primitive campground. Next, we went to the Pecos campground, Mesquite campground, main boat ramp and visitor center. The visitor center was closed, probably due to Covid-19. The Pecos campground and Mesquite campground were more barren than below the dam. Most of the campsites had picnic tables under shelters. There were very few campers in those 2 campgrounds. We enjoyed the very long two lane boat ramp because of the lake view and dock. The East Side campground did not look as nice as the Pecos campground and Mesquite campground. The lake looked very low. We paid $5 at a self-fee booth.

It is a beautiful lake with interesting shape. Nice boat ramp and plenty of room to walk and fish and sit and enjoy the landscape. During February, it is quiet and feels like you have the place to yourself. The park ranger is helpful and friendly.

As I made my way down the '84 on my way to Roswell after leaving the Blue Hole, I saw the sign for Sumner Lake State Park. I have been to Fort Sumner before but never up to the lake. Being an explorer and not knowing when I would be back in the area I decided I had to check it out. I would be in Roswell much later than I had planned but I had the whole day to do whatever I wanted to. Off I went, I took the turn down the 203 and headed to the Lake. Please note that it's about 20 minutes to get there from the '20 unless you get stuck behind a massive slow-moving RV (just sayin'). As I approached the area I noticed a picnic area, which I stopped at and checked out. I went to the west side of the lake and drove along the dam and into the park. When I got out I was on a high ridge and quite a drop to the lake so I walked along one of the lake trails and saw a really nice lake, surrounded by rock and sand and dirt, but very scenic in a desert sort of way. I found a little path that took me right to the water. The water was clear but you could see its a muddy, silty bottom. Even so, I changed into my shorts and went for a swim. The water was very nice, cool but not cold. Like any lake the closer you are to the shore the warmer the water. I didn't go out too far as it was an unfamiliar body of water but I got a good 10-minute swim before I decided to check out more of the lake. I didn't find any showers but I was able to clean up sufficiently in the of the restrooms.
I drove around the park and took i the amazing view and drove around some of the cottages and homes in the village. You can't really get to the other side of the lake without a truck, jeep or quad, but there are trails so be warned. The other side of the park is very nice as well, the camping and trailer spots are clean and well kept. There are trails and paths and inlets and lagoons all around the lake opposite the dam, so you can spend a few hours, a day or a few days at the lake and not get bored. The Lake has fishing, boating, and you can canoe and kayak as well as swim, and the area is really worth exploring. I do recommend a visit if you're looking for something to do. Be careful as it is hot and dry you can get sunburned quite easily if you're not careful. It is really worth checking out.

This State Park is clean, set up perfectly to enjoy a campfire, a sheltered meal with the option of sheltering your tent as we did knowing a thunderstorm was on the horizon.
This time of year is perfect to enjoy the areas away from the marina and be by yourselves! From the hummingbirds and small lizards to the assorted cactuses and trees, this landscape is truly enchanting!

We were glad to have a place to camp on the way home to Texas. It was hard to set up the tent on site 18 due to wind. No trees blocking the wind. The wind calmed down but picked up again so we had to take off the top portion of the tent (tent cover) because our tent was about to colapse while we were sleeping. RV’s pullled into the primitive campsites at dark and left their generators on all night. My daughter heard a woman’s scream. The local police were called at 1 am near a camp site on the other side of the lake. The police were there for hours. It’s flat so you can see in the distance. The lighrs kept us awake. There was a flashing light near our campsite as well in the middle of the night. We have no idea what happened, but it was unnerving so we didn’t get much sleep.

Stayed here 1 night with my dog tent camping. The places with the most shade are at the bottom of the dam at the river. There were some flies but guess the heat kept them at bay. There is no access to water so that is a bummer for more than 1 night stay.

We have been bringing the kids here since we got tired of the loud drinking crowds took over at EB. We now try to go a couple times a year with family and friends. Last trip we were able to take the next generation and had a fantastic time. We had children, grand children and dog to camp, jet ski and kayak. Best time ever! Even had the grand babies and dog out on the water toys. Quiet but fun lake with nice camp grounds and facilities. Would recommend to any one who likes to fish, swim, boat or hike in a quiet beautiful Southwest environment.

Jean A is correct about going on line to the NM state park web site to reserve a spot. However, Sumner Lake park has plenty of sites on both the east and west side of the Lake so if you are heading there before the peak season you can just go in and pick open spot and self pay. Or see the ranger when you arrive and they are more than happy to help.

Is there a time limit on how long you can stay?
Skrevet 8. oktober 2015
Yes. Most NM State Parks have a limit of 14 days, then you can leave for a day or two and return. Check with the fine print on the web site for this detail, or call one of the state parks. Some of the smaller parks have limited or no office hours since it is October.
