Giving star reviews for cemeteries and memorials is a bit odd but here goes. For those visiting the Western Front I would recommend visiting cemeteries of all nations with the mist obvious being the CWGC for British and Commonwealth graves, the French and the Germans. Each has a distinct style and atmosphere and provides a useful reference for the history of the Great War. The cemetery is huge (the largest in France) and walking around the site with its dark crosses and abundant trees gives time to reflect on the sacrifice paid by so many on both sides. If you are able, spare some time for the dead on both sides of the conflict.

32 thousand soldiers are buried here. The cemetery is notable in its scale. The design and atmosphere is interesting to compare to the CWGC site just next door.

This is a huge German cemetery that is not visited as much. It is well maintain by the locals. The grass is neatly trimmed, crosses are black containing the name of the soldier, rank and born and death dates. Several matures trees will shade the soldiers final resting place. Also, there is an area called collective burial site, where more than 4,000 soldiers were buried together as their identification was not possible.
I felt chills during my whole visit. Different from the British/Canadian cemeteries where everything is white and illuminated. The German cemeteries are dim, dark, hidden, enclosed in the middle of tall robust trees. It gives you a feeling of fear and sadness.
This place is very thought provoking, as you image that those mens, like their so called "enemies" were someone's son, father and husband. They were people that perhaps did not have a choice in going or not to a horrible war. Now, they are dead and buried alone, far from their loved ones.
My son made a beautiful gesture that I will never forget. He saw a huge branch tree that fell on top of one of the graves. He went there and took that huge branch way cleaning the plot. Then, he turned to me and said: "He was just a soldier fighting for his country and he died far from his family. He was a person and he deserves respect. Does not matter which side he was on, he was still a human.

Our taxi driver stopped here knowing this was something we should see. A large cemetary with simple crosses, each with four names engraved - two front and two back. It is good to remember the sacrifices made by families on both sides of any war.

This is worth a visit and there are some surprises such as Jewish Germann Soldiers who fought for their country in WW1. It is an interesting contrast to the Allied cemeteries.

Like in the West corner of Flanders, this region was deeply into the first world-war. Many ceneteries, from many different nationalities show the involvement of so many peoples from all over Europe and from the whole world. The German cemetery is just as impressive, very simple but very impressive. It stuns any visitor with the dramatic events and senseless deaths
