We are nature photographers. The plan was to go to Bosque del Apache to see the migrating sandhill cranes and snow geese, but found out that most of them had moved to Ladd in December 2023 and didn't return yet. Not that we did not love the Bosque. It was awesome. But for the big bird show, Ladd was the place to be in January 2024. Be sure to make some calls before you go, so you are able to find what you are looking for.

We have always gone to Bosque del Apache, but this year there were very few cranes there so we decided to explore further up and down the river. We found Ladd S Gordon and were utterly delighted! I would give this 5 stars if it was larger, but within the constraints of size, this place was wonderful. There are raised platforms which allow you to see more of the birds. They have planted grain for the birds so there are many coming in. There are different habitats so you can see different birds. Don't limit yourself to the Cranes.... There are lots of other birds there as well.

A bit off the beaten track from the main Bosque del Apache NWR, this complex is a bit quieter. Scenery is beautiful for backdrops to the migrating birds.

The crowds go to Bosque but if you want to visit a place quickly and see cranes, you can definitely do that here. Worth a stop!

On our way south to Las Cruces we decided to drop by this relatively small nature preserve. There was no ticket booth and no rangers, just signs directing us clock-wise around the 3-mile loop. The advised speed limit was 5 mph, rather slow even for an unpaved stony road. There was not too much to see for the initial mile but we knew the sandhill cranes were there; small groups were flying around and their constant calls filled the air. Web checked a couple raised and roofed platforms. We saw nothing at the first. We spotted the sandhill cranes in the distance at the second. We also saw a red-tailed hawk swooping overhead and an American kestrel perched on a power line.
We then parked further along the loop and took a short hike at the edge of a small lake and marsh. We spotted a few snow geese in the distance; it was early afternoon and their compatriots may have been feeding elsewhere in the area. There were many cranes closer in to us now, feeding on grass and in nearby cornfields. We then came upon them on the road crossing between fields; the need for the extremely low speed was now obvious. We got some decent close-up views of the cranes with both binoculars and zoom lens.
We enjoyed our short visit and recommend it to any birdwatchers who pass through the area in late fall and winter

Most everyone knows about the Bosque Del Apache and will travel from all over the US to see the Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese at sunrise and sunset. But when we visited, after the sunrise take-ff show, we drove to Bernardo to see them land and feed in the corn fields, still up close and personal. We were here in Jan 2020, and it was amazing. Perhaps we were lucky and it's not always like this, but we had a once in a lifetime experience, seeing all the snow geese and sandhill cranes (thousands of them) take off and circle several times when they were disturbed by a vehicle wanting to drive through them (slowly) on the road. Not only did the birds on the road flush, but every bird in the surrounding corn fields evacuated too. It was really something to see.

The waterfowl complex is a nice drive around. It was pretty quiet in late October. Well marked and laid out. We didn’t see the flights of the waterfowl there, had to cross the bridge into a little turnout to see more, and the view from the first road across the bridge was pretty spectacular.

We are on our way to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. In looking on the Web for information on the Bosque, we discovered several other refuges in the area. One is the Bernardo area (part of the larger Ladd Gordon Complex). The nice thing about Bernardo is the three mile driving loop. Given that we're in this idiotic Government Shutdown, I was pleased to find that the loop was open.
The loop goes around a number of fields that earlier in the year were planted with corn (and possibly other grains). In the fields were lots and lots of birds. Like big birds. While we were always a bit away from the birds, we thoroughly enjoyed watching them feed and interact with each other. As someone indicated, this is a rather compact area. But the birds as usual are spectacular. This was a good augmentation to Bosque. I recommend it.

After several days at the Bosque I decided we should check out this other property. We came after lunch and planned to stay until sunset but for some reason there was no standing water on the property like flooded fields. Not too big a deal but there was dried corn fields and plenty of cranes but we saw no ducks or geese due to the lack of water. We ended up leaving before sunset but we drove the whole property and besides the migratory birds we saw several hawks, Harris's and red tailed as well as blue birds and sparrows and crows. Also saw some road runners.
The bird blinds are well made and if conditions are good could be great for watching and photographing birds.
Ok, a few things to know: There is no charge to go here. It is not always marked correctly on maps and they don't have their own website but you exit on Exit 175 north of Socorro. After exiting head north on the service road along the interstate until you see the entrance.

Compared to the Bosque del Apache this is small. But that is also an advantage with less visitors and plenty of wild life. Though we arrived about noon which is not the best time for birding the wildlife was in abundance. From ~ November through February is the best time to view the Sand Hill Cranes and today I was amazed at the number of birds here. The complex is farmed just to provide food for the wildlife. There were just a few overlooks and stops but they were very well done. Also a couple picnic areas and one area with 'blinds' overlooking a pond - no birds there at this time, they were all out in the fields. Also - no fee to enter!
