Best time to hike to avoid crowds is on a weekday. We did this and only saw a few people on the trail. Very tranquil and joyful! Depending where you start the loop there is either a gradual incline and then a gradual decline. A good workout when climbing up. Perfect picnic stop at the top for lunch. The views remind me a bit of Switzerland, the green hills and a pristine looking river/lake. After hiking, the town of Cold Spring has many good eats. We had to get ice cream and ate it overlooking a romantic lake with a gazebo. Perfect spot for romantic vibes!

This used to be a great hike before hoards and hoards of wanna be hikers and wanna be influencers made their way onto the trail to stop ever two seconds for a selfie. It is given way to pollution, graffiti and noise. Furthermore-don’t expect anyone to be wearing masks or social distancing. Not at all the peaceful retreat it once was.

I am leaving reviews of local trails as a local, not to be mean or to try to scare people away, but because we have been inundated since the pandemic and it seems a lot of people are new to the area and to hiking and general. First of all, please use official maps to get to the trail heads. YOUR GPS/WHATEVER MAP APP YOU ARE USING IS WRONG. They are showing access points to the trail that are actually peoples driveways and private roads. The driveways are gated and have sensors and the last thing you want is for someone to call the police. The signs on the roads indicate which are private roads, please obey them and not your map app. Second, these are real trails, with a lot of vertical portions and a lot of rocks and uneven ground. Please wear proper footwear and consider hiking elsewhere if you are in poor health. Our local rescue is staffed by volunteers, they are stressed out. As a matter of fact, if you are on a trail that looks like a driveway, guess what! That IS a driveway! And you are trespassing!

The number of lost hikers and hikers needing rescue seems to be at an all time high, I am just writing reviews here after I hear which trails people *thought* they were trying to find. We are very happy to have tourists back on our trails but NOT in our homes and definitely not in the ER!

My husband and I love hiking the long loop of Bull Hill. It's steep enough in places to give you a good workout but ends with a gentle descent through beautiful woods. I recommend going on the early side because it gets crowded, especially in the summer. Bonus! If you live in NYC, it's really easy to get to by train.

or….WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH….FALL OVER.

Descending one of the steeper, rockier parts of this trail, my arthritic knees (worn out from too much jogging back in the days of no shoes/bad shoes) are killing me. They give up the challenge and down I go into a slide, tumble. Miraculously the damage is a few grazes.

THE TRAIL – this is no killer trek unless you are an over the hill 73yo like me. Only a few years back I’d class the whole as MODERATE-AN OK WORKOUT – some parts have gentle gradients with a sweet surface, others steeper and/or rougher. But at no time did it get above my standard of FAIRLY DIFFICULT – past that is DIFFICULT followed by HEART BREAKER and DON’T SEND FLOWERS. Length varies according to branches of the multiple trails used – my original plan was to go up the main trail (WASHBURN) from the parking area to the intersection of the first side trail (UNDERCLIFF), and then descend to COLD SPRING on that trail – one of the shorter treks in the area in deference to my knees, but one passing several good viewpoints. Total distance around 3mi/4.8km.
Didn’t turn out like that – a short way into the UNDERCLIFF descent I lost the trail markers which had been excellent until then. After a futile search I turned and retraced my steps. Don’t mark down the trek on this basis – I have previous form on losing the trail (have reviews titled “WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH….TURN BACK”} and the several reports I’ve read down-page don’t mention losing markers. It was shortly after this I took my tumble, despite having hiking poles.
VIEWPOINTS – my route actually turned a bit short of the summit of MT TAURUS but there were at least half a dozen spots along my way giving views back over COLD SPRING, towards WEST POINT and BACK DOWN THE HUDSON. See pix. I walked abt a km the opposite (inland) way on the UNDERCLIFF hoping to get a view up river but no luck.
PARTICIPANTS? – maybe not old geezers with dodgy knees. But experienced trekkers will find this merely a good workout with some nice outlooks. Inexperienced fit types will have no problems, the unfit may need a few rest stops but should do the shorter loops okay. KIDS? Well fit keen kids will find it a doddle but the very young may have problems.
FOOTWEAR – some sections have baseball-sized sharp weathered rocks on steep slippery slopes which require a bit better than flip-flops or sandals. Joggers would be just okay, proper hiking shoes better. Poles? Not necessary but I help when slopes are involved.
CRITTERS – didn’t see too many birds or mammals but I came across 2 black snakes crossing the track. Experience from many encounters in the Australian bush says snakes only attack when feeling threatened. I ignored them and they ignored me.
MAPS – a box at the trail-head had a supply of detailed maps of the full area.
GETTING THERE – walk up COLD SPRING main st, turn left at MORRIS AVE/ RT.90) and go 1100yd/1km to the parking lot. The trail-head is at the far end. The lot is sizeable but may become full on a nice summer weekend. Across the main road is the NATIONAL PARK OFFICE but it was closed my early Fall weekday visit.
CROWDS – not my visit, when I encountered abt 10 other trekkers over 3 hours, but I understand this is one popular place in high season.
EMPATHY - back at my NYC hostel I emailed LADY ‘ELDO that my hiking career was finished: this geezer was officially LAME. She answered: “THEY SHOOT HORSES DON’T THEY?’

There are many well worn paths to the top of Break Neck Ridge. I enjoy the one that goes past Mt. Taurus (Bull Hill). It provides a nice spot for a break and a view and it is much less traveled and crowded than the overrun trails by the tunnel.

Did this hike on a sunny Sunday.
Bull Hill(Mount Taurus) can be a bit challenging at times so it's much better suited for older children(teens) and adults.
The views at the top of the Hudson River and Valley are beautiful!
You can see Breakneck and Storm King Mountain from the top as well.
If you're coming from NYC it's easily to get to Bull Hill.
The train station is right across the street.
That being said, Bull Hill can be VERY busy on the weekends.
It's much better to do the hike during the week, if possible.

I had trouble figuring out exactly how we were going to get to the trailhead from the train station when I was planning the trip from our home in NYC, so I'll just start by saying it's a short walk to the trailhead from the station -- maybe 20 mins. You walk through the town and then make a left -- anyone can tell you where to go. It was a super foggy day when we went so we didn't get to see much by way of views, but the forest had an enchanted feel to it. We were worried our 5 year old would not make it all the way, but we did the entire short loop in about 4 hours. (The signs say 2-3 hours, but that's for adults.) The white part of the trail is probably steepest. Yellow is a bit less intense, and the red/blue is almost flat. Overall a great experience. We started around 2 pm and were done at 4. Maybe because of the weather it wasn't terribly crowded even on a long weekend in the fall.

Hiked to Bull Hill in the East Hudson Highlands with my wife and brother-in-law. It was steep in some parts and rocky in others but the views are wonderful. It would be a good family hike with older children (say 11 and up). Parking was easy and the trail was well marked.

This was an awesome hike with fantastic views. I think it may have taken us 2hours tops to view of the Catskills and climb the steepest of hills. They have many routes within the Hudson River Valley, I'll be shooting for a tougher one next go round.
