Moderate trail with great views with the occasional breath taking hawk encounter. For hiking novices, I feel it a nice start. Rock trails followed by dirt trail to give you a break. Big stones you can sit on and grab a breath. The ascent is great cardio and leg work.

We had a great day hike here. Total trail distance from the trailhead entrance off 202 to the top and back is around 1.8 to 2.5 miles depending on if you explore a little more at the top. Beautiful views from the top where there is an American flag and painted rocks dedicated to local law enforcement and firefighters. Part of the trail intersects with the Appalachian Trail. Can be wet and slippery depending on the season but the trail is always maintained exceptionally well and well marked. Can be busy on the weekends. From the top you’ll get a one of a kind view of the Bear Mountain Bridge. Total trip time was approximately 2 hours walking at a steady and easy pace with a 15 minute stop at the summit to take pictures and enjoy the view of the bridge and the Hudson River.

This is hardly "all you need to know" since it leaves out the single most important thing. Parking. I couldn't get passed the misleading title.

I did enjoy the hike very much. It’s nice to be outdoors especially during these difficult times. However, you will get a parking ticket for $175 if you park on the side of the road next to the trail. I was safely off to the side along with other vehicles and everyone received a parking ticket. The ticket is from the Philipstown Justice Court - town justice Stephen G. Tomann.

To the town of Philipstown: I recommend having people pay for parking at the Bear mountain lodging and then bus everyone over. People want to enjoy the beauty of nature. This is a smart and better/kinder way to make money and not making money from parking tickets. You will get more people keep coming back and visiting your beautiful area!

Very good hike!!!! We chose to hike mid-week as covid times create rather large gatherings and busy summits come the weekend. As most train stations along the Metro North/Hudson line are staggered, the best route was Grand Central to Peekskill as it was off-peak on a weekday. We departed the city at 8:45am and, upon our arrival to Peekskill (an hour later), opted to walk toward the Camp Smith trailhead (the entrance of which is located behind the Bear Mountain TollHouse). To get there, we walked from the train station, through town, hugging to the left and following our phones guided route through the to the trailhead. Be mindful to watch for small changes along this 2 mile journey! [Theres also taxis available to take you to your trailhead should you want to keep life easy.] Once you've reached the tollhouse, follow the blue markers. Its a 3.5 mile hike through to Anthonys nose, with 2-3 ascents and descents to get to the main peak. You'll reach "Anthonys nose"after some time but follow the path down a few hundred feet to the right & theres a more rewarding lookout point. The view takes you directly over Bear Mountain Bridge & is home to many birds of prey!
Whether you choose to double back into Peekskill from here, or head along toward the entrance of the Appalachian trail a few hundred meters north (w), allow yourself about 20 minutes for an uber to be able to reach you to take you back to town.
Good luck & be mindful!

The view from the top is spectacular - really interesting look down at the Bear Mountain Bridge and surrounding area. We took the trail from Route 9D and the trip up is about 35 minutes - the first 20 or so being rocky and fairly steep (though not overly taxing) and the last part generally flat with a few uphill parts.

The only downside to the experience was that it was fairly crowded - both on the trail and summit. So you never really felt alone and were always encountering people. Not the end of the world, but not really a peaceful/tranquil hike either. Note that we did go on Labor Day weekend, so perhaps that was the reason.

Do not visit by car. Cortlandt Manor local police issues severe parking tickets, even if there is no visible “no parking” sign and even if you are parked very safely without any annoyance to anyone.

Not too impressed. First half of hike was moderately intense and fun. Second half kind of boring. End result, not too impressed with the actual end result, view, etc. Sorry, just saying...

This was a hard hike, but worth the trip. The views were amazing and the trail was clearly marked. You must take water with you when hiking this trail
