The Nautical Mile, once a cherished local gem of Long Island, offered a wide variety of restaurants, bars, dessert spots, seafood markets, gift shops, and mini-golf for children. It was a common hotspot for families on weekends seeking waterfront dining experiences. However, everything changed when Hurricane Sandy hit the south shore and devastated many of the beloved businesses. The loss of the Schooner, one of the most popular restaurants, was a real blow to the business community.
Many of the historic restaurants on the Nautical Mile have since closed their doors as a new demographic emerged. Once a family-centric destination, it now caters more to a lively, younger crowd with a stronger emphasis on the bar scene. Many new restaurants have shifted to Caribbean-style cuisine. Unfortunately, most marinas have also closed, leading to a decline in boat traffic. During my recent visit, families were scarce and police patrols were prominent—an unfamiliar sight from the past.

Party strip of bars along a mile long strip of docks and boat slips. Good for weekend night life. Lots of Caribbean inspired seafood cuisine & expensive drinks. Not very good for kids.

The Nautical Mile in Freeport, New York on Long Island
is the Gem of the Village.
Great restaurants, cocktail spots and shops are plentiful
along this busy strip of Long Islands Canal.
Some of the best bands in LI perform here regularly.
A strollers paradise that must be experienced when
in Freeport.
Boat rentals, Casino ships and plenty of fresh caught,
uncooked seafood options available for purchase.
Please don't drink and drive.
Enjoy your visit.

The Nautical Mile seemed oddly haunted and dilapidated but I still loved it. Grabbed some crab cakes and crawfish salad and crab at Two Cousins. Would maybe go back to Two Cousins for seafood salad, shrimp salad and lobster salad another time. The fish didn’t appeal to me. The Tuna looked questionable. Ottos down the road looked wildly interesting.

The Nautical Mile has many restaurants and shops to look at while you stroll down the avenue. Most of the places are closed but on a sunny day it is still nice just to walk around.

Back in the '80s and '90s, the Nautical Mile was terrific. Lots of decent, reasonably priced restaurants, moderate or light crowds of pretty good people, a lot of atmopshere of working docks and waterfront.
Sadly, all the character has been beaten out of it by an appeal to the drink-til-you're-staggering crowd.
The food at place after place along the walk is poor and overpriced, the menus are almost invariably lifeless and fomulaic, and the cacaphony of bad music pounding from the bars makes a meal here pointless. The bars seem to attract a lot of loud, obnoxious drunks - think Coney Island after sundown. That feel permeates everything: how people drive, how they walk on the sidewalks, how they talk. The staff at restaurant after restaurant seemed to have that same attitude, too.
Used to be a good time coming here. Now it makes sense only if you want the feel of a ratty-around-the edges club scene in a low-rent college town.

We biked down here just to see what what going on. Of course Corona virus has impacted the restaurants that are open but it definitely is not like it used to be. Over the past winter a number of large restaurants closed and it just seems there are more closed places than open. Of places that are closed, some are in disrepair and the street just seemed to have a lot of garbage on it. It needs a major overhaul.

It was an interesting little strip next to the docks and a narrow inlet to the bay. It does have sidewalks and a handful of historic markers/signs, but it seemed to me to be primarily a restaurant row. There were not too many attractions or interesting shops that I saw. There does appear to be many decent restaurants and the ones on one side are right up against the docks. We tried a few of them with mixed results. There is a scenic pier at the far end to look out over the bay and the marshes. Free parking can be found on the street if you are patient or if you want to walk a couple blocks. There are also large metered parking lots. I did enjoy watching some of the boats go in and out of the inlet. There are also some nice cars and motorcycles cruising the mile.

Joli port de plaisance et très belle cote pour balades à pied ou en vélo. Malheureusement nous n’avons pas eu de chance avec la météo.

I live in Freeport. I love to walk the Nautical Mile, visit the restaurants and shops, look at the historic markers.

It's probably close to a Nautical mile, which is actually longer than a mile one way.

Hi, Rhona. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Hi I am planning a holiday to New York next summer, I was looking for 3 days beach holiday after the visit to the city. I really like the idea of Long Beach but after your review I'm not so keen. I am in my early 40s and I'm looking for a nice classy place with a beach, boardwalk, good food and maybe some outdoor entertainment, I would be grateful if you could recommend some where not trashy but on the other hand not the Hamptons either.
Kind Regards
Rhona (Scotland)

So the Jewel of the downstate park system in NY is Jones Beach. Miles of boardwalk and ocean. There's also Fire Island which offers you a place to stay and some nice eateries. You can't drive there but it is accessible by boats which leave from various points on Long Island seven days a week. Finally, there's Long Beach with its 2.5-mile boardwalk, oceanfront condominiums. tons and tons of restaurants and a lovely new hotel located right on the boardwalk. You might also consider Hampton Bays, the "un Hampton(s) which is a fun community with beautiful beaches, lots of housing and great restaurants. So you have lots and lots of choices. Good luck and get in the swim of things...

I am not sure if there are any bars that are exclusively bars, and not a restaurant with a bar. Only someone over 21 may sit at the bar, but a persons under 21 may be in a group or family sitting at a table or in a booth.
Also some businesses may post a sign only persons over 21 permitted past 11pm or something like that.
I hope that answers your question.

ONLY THE OUTDOOR BARS CLOSE FOR THE WINTER.
There are always restaurants open, so there is no official closing of The Mile. There are always people enjoying when the weather is good even in winter. Several years ago we had a warm Columbus weekend and some of the outdoor bars opened even though they had winterized prior to the weekend. It's all weather related.
