Arriving by catamaran we are dropped off on the island by motorboat. We all find ourselves under a wooden shelter, too many of us. The staff are adorable but despite the anti-mosquito cream and spray we were devoured barely 2m into the forest. Whole clouds, stings even through clothes!! It completely ruins the visit. We turned around and despite this my husband had more than 30 bites on his back and arms which took several days to heal. We should have avoided this island.

We visited Cousin in Nov 2023.
We booked Cousin island as part of a 3-island excursion (Cousin, Curieuse and St. Pierre) through Mason's Travel, which as a supplier were pretty good. Clean catamaran, lively crew and nice food. Cousin island is small and due to the protected nature is left untouched in order to protect the wildlife. We have no problem with this at all but they shouldn't be taking tourists there. Within 2 minutes we were getting covered in mosquitos.
The party split into a few groups and we headed "inland" with our tour guide. However none of us listened to a single word he said as all anyone cared about was swatting the mozzies.
They. Were. EVERYWHERE.

Millions of them.

It wasn't at all worth it as the island (with accompanying wildlife) was really boring. We saw a couple of birds, a tortoise and a swamp (which was to blame for the mosquitos). Excellent.

We weren't told to wear special clothing (i.e. long sleeved shirts, or trousers) and just advised to "apply your insect repellent - which we did but had little effect).
The following day I counted my bites: 25 on one hand, 46 on the other and 125 on my back. Up my arms and ankles too. AWFUL.

Cousin Island is indeed a special place for species endemic to the Seychelles. It is a pretty island with a stunning white sand beach and teal blue ocean. I took a solo, private tour in November 2023. I do considerable research before I travel and therefore had read about the swarms of mosquitoes that inhabit the island. I dressed accordingly with long sleeves, long pants and a hat that I'd treated with Permithren. My hat even had mosquito netting attached to it to keep mosquitoes out of my face. A number of the other tour participants, mostly European, found my outfit amusing, elbowing each other, pointing and laughing. I just waved at the critics. A few moments into our tour, no one was laughing at me anymore. Most of the participants came poorly prepared for the mosquitoes, which are definitely not to be taken lightly. Some even showed up in swimsuits. The mosquitoes were relentless with them. About halfway through the tour, several participants were urging the tour guide to shorten his discourse. This was a miserable group of people--they were hot (it was a particularly hot day), sticky (the humidity was about 89%, and they were being eaten alive by the mosquitoes. The guide kept telling people NOT to kill the mosquitoes since they were a major part of the island's resident magpie-robins' diets. Toward the end of the tour (at least an hour later), the guide told people that there were at least 30 minutes left in the tour and laughed at the expressions of dismay on people's faces. I could see the beach and knew he was trying to be funny. The guide wasn't very informative, and frankly I thought his attitude was arrogant, rude and callous. We were definitely able to see some of the endemic birds--white (fairy) terns, lesser noddies, white-tailed tropicbirds, and magpie-robins. But the entire experience was not particularly enjoyable. I left the tour with ZERO mosquito bites and even had a few people come up to me afterwards owning up that they'd laughed at me but wished they'd dressed accordingly. Despite the fact that I was well prepared, I considered the tour a dreadful experience. KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO, PEOPLE. I'm surprised tour operators didn't warn visitors ahead of time so they could avoid being lunch and dinner for the mosquitoes. The torture continued after the tour ended and we had to wait in the hot sun on the shadeless beach for an island boat to ferry us to our respective tour boats. Some of us waited more than 45 minutes. I recommend it only to hardy souls who prepare for the conditions. Don't be afraid to dress for comfort no matter how ridiculous other people think you look. They will soon understand that a visit to this island is not a fashion show and instead is a test of common sense and human endurance.

Tourist rip-off: 600 SR/person for a guided tour of around 45 minutes around a completely mosquito-infested island. Seabirds, geckos, a handful of turtles. You have to use the poorly organized transfer from the boat to the island and back, which is carried out by pompous tour guides. Mass processing by Seychelles standards.

I was on holiday in the Seychelles and visited the islet with a catamaran excursion organized by the Creole agency.

everything is truly wonderful and stupendous, the island is an almost completely uncontaminated natural paradise with a beautiful forest, a very long pier that takes you to the center of the island and lets you step onto the opposite shore.

the encounter with the giant tortoises and the perfect oasis for the combination of nature and man are wonderful, they are free, they let you be petted and they look at you with funny faces.

on the opposite side of the island there is a splendid house (that of the island doctor at the time when it was used for lepers and to abandon former slave blacks, the villa is under renovation due to the termites that were completely eating it , but the colonial style is perfectly distinguishable and it is wonderful to admire it even like this.

experience absolutely worth trying, unforgettable sensations.

My belief is the guides are not real rangers, they have a set script and when asked about other birds outside the ‘script’ they didn’t want to explain or they didn’t know about them. A lot of time wasted waiting to be ferried to and from our boat.

We visited as part of the three Island tour with Saggitarius. The island itself is beautiful with some wonderful endemic birds that you can get very close to, as well as a few giant tortoises and small wildlife, like skink and crab. You must take a guided walking tour which lasts about an hour and was very good. Do cover yourself in insect represent though as there are so many mosquitos.

However, the organisation for getting on and off the island was not so great. You have to be collected from your excursion boat by the island boat, which only seats about 10 people. A lot of people arrived at once the day we visited and it took an age to ferry everyone back and forth. There was a lot of hanging around, which unfortunately took some of the shine off the experience, hence by 4 star rating.
