We enjoyed an exhilarating cruise on Lake Kariba over three nights, sailing on Houseboat Sundowner across the Lake to Hydro Bay against the backdrop of the Matusadonha mountains, into the Sanyati Gorge, then to Changa, then to Antelope Island, before finishing off the tour in Kariba at Andora Harbour.
Our Sundowner Experience started with a flawless booking process through Sylvia and Ceri at Rhino Rendezvous. I cannot thank them enough for their guidance and knowledge and this could not have been possible without them. Through them, we booked transfer from Harare for our group of 11 on a bus charter from Hersov Tours. Abel drove us safely and took us to all our mini tour destinations on land without hassle.
Houseboat Sundowner itself was the main event. It is a mixture of ruggedness, charm, and luxury. The Sundowner was made even more special by the crew of Lovemore the Skipper, Joe the Cook, and James the deck hand. Together, these three gave us a memorable trip that will endure in memory for a lifetime.
Lovemore knows the lake like the back of his hand. He navigates without a compass, and is deeply knowledgeable about the channels, expertly rounding the dead trees. He took our group of novice fishers and turned them into confident ones. He also has a contagious smile and laugh.
Joe fed us with a wonderful assemblage of delicious treats and meals, and we were delighted to try his own signature hot sauce. He was often hard at work in the kitchen while we were having fun, and this could not have been easy in the Kariba heat!
James was also an amazing deck hand. He cleaned with an efficiency that is unique and made sure that our living area on the top deck and our cabins were always spick and span.
We had the two pontoon tender boats to go fishing and game viewing. We encountered more hippos than you can imagine, crocodiles, elephants, including some huge tuskers, antelope, waterbuck, and lots of colourful birds such as cormorants, darters, pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, yellow-billed storks, and plenty more.
Above all, we saw the most remarkable sunrises and sunsets on the lake, and wow, did these impress! We were up each morning to catch the sunrise, and without fail, stopped to gaze at another sunset.
Sundowner was a really special privilege to experience.

Spent 2 nights in Kariba. Had a tour of the dam in the house boat. Although the boat is basic, i loved it .

Fascinating part of the work but houseboat Sahwari was a lot more basic than expected. The air conditioning in the 2 suites did not work, sofa on main deck was stained and smelt and a lot of the carpet was constantly wet.
On the plus side great crew and food. Great for those who like fishing and game viewing but wouldnt use that level of houseboat. Only one step up from camping.

Spent three nights on Umbozha cruise boat on Lake Kariba. The boat was very well furnished, smart and comfortable.Loved our bedroom, spacious, comfy beds and plenty of lighting.Food was plentiful and tasty. The staff were so friendly and eager to please.Enjoyed all of it from chilling on top deck to relaxing in my cabin.Trips off especially the sunset drinks trips were beautiful with the dead trees enhancing the scenery.
Tender boats were used to leave the boat which often could not get close to the animals as the water was too shallow.A very enjoyable three days.

A truly beautiful part of the world. Quiet and serene, the lake is one of the most scenic I have seen. Our boat trip on it was a real highlight. Hippos, fishermen and petrified trees give the lake its variety.

Went for a sunset cruise on the lake, was for a good length of time and lots of fun. Only saw a few hippos but I saw the best sunset ever. Absolutely beautiful over the lake.

To start off, the crew were just incredible. Some of the most fantastic people that just anticipated our every need to the point where we didn't have to lift a finger. They made the holiday that much more relaxing. They were all full of knowledge and information on everything that goes on in Kariba. Moses the deck hand was a fishing guru that allowed us to have a lot of success even in muddy water. Goodson was a great captain who planned our stops perfectly and got us everywhere we needed to go. Jimmy was great in the kitchen and didn't fail to produce a spectacular meal every time. They were always around when we needed them but never were never in our way when we didn't which is amazing considering we were on the same boat for four days.
Kariba itself was spectacular and after travelling a significant amount definitely remains in the top 5 places I have been. Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and just the most peaceful place to be.
The new owner was very helpful and has big plans for his new boat. Very reliable and willing to answer any questions you have. We spent a long time researching all the boats on kariba and he definitely had the best prices and value for money.
The boat itself was perfect. The pool is a must during these hot periods. And the cabins had the perfect breeze at night to cool them down. The bar and deck area was spacious and even had space for some morning exercise.
Couldn't have asked for a more incredible experience from the most incredible staff in the most incredible place.

Beautiful inland water body with plenty of wildlife to see along the shore. There are a lot of hippos on the Lake.

What are the Malaria risks in June /July for a pregnant lady going on a houseboat?
Skrevet 4. mars 2018
For pregnant women, you cant take any chances. Its safe to take anti-malaria medication before you travel to Kariba

How much time it takes in a boat from aVic falls to Kariba in a boat? What kinds of boats are available?
Skrevet 22. februar 2018
,
The Kariba Ferry (see their website for the timetable) takes 22 hours from Mlibizi (south of Vic. Falls) to Kariba. All meals are provided, seating folds down into beds for night sleeping, blankets and pillows are supplied. It is a wonderful trip (we did it both ways) and we would do it again. Please ask if you have any more questions.

Is the road from Vic falls to Milibizi tarred and suitable for motor cycles?
Skrevet 9. oktober 2017
Yes, you will be alright (my husband, who was a motorcyclist says so!) but do watch out for those pot holes!

Hi guys we live in South Africa so dont really want to travel further than the Mlibizi so first of all we need to find cheap accommodation in the Mlibizi. Apparently there used to be chalets by a camp sight that were reasonable does anyone know what this place is called. We 4 young adults so not looking for delux accommodation that will cost us a fortune. Secondly does anyone know what it costs to go out on the faery to fish dayly? I hear it can be quite costly?

How do we get there from South Africa and how safe is it?
Skrevet 26. april 2016
Sophia Hello,
Option 1:Get a flight from Johannesburg to Harare( daily flights) . Air Zimbabwe has 2 or 3 flights a week from Harare to Kariba, check availability in advance its normally a tiny Cessna.
Option 2: Get a flight from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls (daily flights), lots of tour operators provide overland transfer to Binga (about 3hrs' drive), from there Paul runs an overnight ferry to Kariba, google Kariba tours for details, ferry is booked months in advance. Kariba is a safe town, if prone to being tipsy stay away from township bars and stick to the hotel bars, Carribea Bay offer an excellent selection.
Option 3: Fly from Johannesburg to Lusaka, Zambia, then drive down to Kariba (about 2-3hrs of good tarred road) you'll view Kariba from the northern shore
Skrevet 26. april 2016
We will be travelling by Ferry from Victoria Falls and then with Lake Kariba Houseboats to Kariba arriving the morning of Saturday 22 August 2015. We need to be in Johannesburg for our departure to Australia at 7.10 p.m. Tuesday 25th August.
First of all we are wondering if we will have to fly back to Victoria Falls to connect to Johannesburg or would we stay in Kariba for a few days and maybe do a tour/safari in that area, then can we fly to Johannesburg? What would be the best and cost effective use of our time?
Skrevet 17. april 2015
You can fly from Kariba to Harare or Victoria falls. An alternative could be to look at flying from Lusaka in Zambia and driving from Kariba to Lusaka. I would recommend spending time in Kariba as the wildlife is spectacular and it is vertually untouched. Especially if you travel to islands on the lake. Enjoy, I am envious of your upcoming adventures.
