Super interesting tour which is well worth the expense. Our guide did a great job explaining about sledding in general and the history of the run at Mt van Hoevenberg

We got to tour one of the most historic Winter Olympic places. We enjoyed seeing and actually getting to walk on the track that was part of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Its crazy how high banked the tracks are. It was neat to see the indoor training facility where they practice the starts for luge, bobsled and skeleton. Its incredible to see!

Like so many sites - the guide is the key. We were fortunate to get a fellow that grew up on the track and represented the U.S. in the Olympics in Japan. Lots of anecdotes, trick and tips, history ... outstanding personal touch. Not sure it is the same for every other tour. You can also ride a babsled (on wheels) or another tracked ride for a very expensive charge at the site as well. As with the other Olympic sites, no history or exhibits relating to all that has taken place at the track. No videos, no medal stands, to photos or exhibits. Such an opportunity missed.

Neat to see. Wish you could get a closer view without having to ride the coaster. Bob sleds were not running on the day we came.

We did not do the bobsled or the coaster but we did go on the legacy tour. It was very informative and Jack is a great tour guide. We learned many new things. I would recommend the tour!

The Bobsled Experience is a short, expensive $125), poorly organized, and underwhelming ride. The zip line, which boards elsewhere, is the best thrill ride on this mountain (Van Hoevenberg), followed by the Cliffside Coaster. I would skip the Bobsled completely. I’ll review the zip line under the other facility.
The Cliffside Coaster ($55) is on the same slope & parking lot as the Bobsled. It boards just over the footbridge at the bottom. The main problem with the Cliffside Coaster is if the car ahead of you decides to take it slow, yours will jerk to a halt periodically and never get to full speed. So I would avoid getting on behind a parent with a child sitting between their legs. They are guaranteed to put the brakes on and spoil your ride! Get in a car behind a teenager or an adult without a small child.
If you’re an older rider and want to go top speed, you should inform the Coaster attendants or else they will “age-profile” you and give you little space between the preceding car. It’s really frustrating to pay full price and be given inadequate space to descend at full speed because of this ageist assumption.

If you ride the bobsled for $125 you must know the entire experience lasts about 60 seconds total. No one talks to you or informs about anything having to do with bobsledding. You get on the ride and you get off. That’s it.

Very welcoming staff. Signs aren't clearly marked, so we just turned into one of the lots. No biggie.
We purchased our tickets and enjoyed watching a camp of school kids rock climbing and luge run on wheels. Val, our tour guide was very friendly, full of information and took her time explaining the process of icing, caring, and cleaning the runs for bobsled, luge, and skeleton.
Unfortunately, we couldn't go to the actual track at the top due to a thunderstorm.
Lots of families riding the bobsled coaster.

We visited when there was winter competitions taking place...both xc skiing and luge. Very neat to see winter athletes in action. Authentic experience. The mountain coaster was closed....I imagine that would be a fun experience.

To start we scheduled for a 2pm start time. We're told to arrive a half hr early for a safety brief. Got ther promptly at 1:25. After having a hard time finding the place cause Google maps was taking us to the top of the whole course. But talked to the lady in the lobby and she sent us upstairs after telling me i could not use my own helmet with the go pro mount. Checked in up stairs and were handed a vibrator for when it was our turn. 9 mins later our vibrator went off. So we were escorted back down stairs and told to load in the chevy suburban. The older guy driving was less then enthusiastic. Our 2 min ride to the start point seemed a little short but my buddy and I and the 3 others that were riding exited the car. The man at the top of the hill started handing out cheap crappy dirt bike helmets. Now please remember I was told I could not use my own helmet for "saftey" reasons. But my $400 snowmobile helmet, bought last year, was not as safe as their dropped, beat up 15 year old helmets. After getting your helmet the guy does help strap it if you have never put on a helmet before. Which my buddy needed. Then they send us to the guy with the sleds and take our picture.
My buddy ended up going first. Still wondering when we were supposed to get our saftey briefing. Or any briefing for that matter. He gets sent on his way and I was trying to clean my goggles that were fogging. Then it was my turn. I lay down and get my push from the sled guy. 27 seconds later I pass what I thought was the observation area with ppl but it was up hill and I ended up coming to a stop. Now I see why they wouldn't let me use my go pro. We go outside and see that we have to walk DOWN to the building where our women were.
Once at the building there was no option for the picture or the video of our run. You could only see what was happening in the lobby on a TV screen with all the other ppl. The top camera is not aimed at the start point so your guessing who is going till second camera position.
Overall.... for just under $3 a second I am highly less then impressed. Was fun to try but not for that price. Will never try that again!!!!

Is it difficult to get walk in tickets? We missed the reservation period. Do they run all day or are there specified sessions?
Skrevet 29. desember 2019
I was there off season in November, and it was very easy to get walk in tickets

Hi - how do you make reservations for the bus trip? Can't find it anywhere on the website.
Thanks..
Skrevet 14. august 2018
Sorry, I don't know about reservations. We got our tickets when we got there. We didn't wait very long at all.
Skrevet 15. august 2018
Hi - how do you get tickets for the van tour?
Skrevet 14. august 2018
Go to the complex near the High School and the outdoor Ice Skating Rink and Museum and you should find answers to any of your questions. Enjoy your stay in beautiful Lake Placid!
Skrevet 16. august 2018
Yes you can. But i know there season is starting you might want to call and ask which areas you can't tour. I went back in September and we toured the entire area. Def. get the passport for $35 and tour everything on it. Hope this helps.

I believe it's year round, although switches from the one we did on wheels in the concrete track to the bobsled on ice for the winter.
