Ganvie, Benin is a stilt city on Lac Nokoue, and is better known as the "Venice of Africa."The only way to see this community, of 22,000 residents, is by boat. We were a group was 30 people so we went in 2 boats. The scenery was amazing... residents in their boats going home with supplies, men fishing,
the mangroves, and buildings. When I asked our guide why these residents lived on the lake she stated, that they were escaping from Africans who were trying to capture them and sell them to Europeans to enslave them. They were never enslaved. Many residents spoke to us, but many did not want their pictures taken. There is a store where you purchase souvenirs, clothing, as well as drinks. Enjoyed this visit in Benin!

This was one of the biggest surprises. We were to visit a village built on stilts. It turned out to be thousands of bamboo huts but also larger objects belonging to the Tofinu tribe. The village was founded in the 17th century. This was the tribe's idea for a safe haven for mines. against slave traders. This vast village on the water looks amazing. Over the centuries, a specific symbiosis between people and Lake Nokoue has developed here. Water transport is widespread here in all possible variants. It is also the basis for the normal functioning of a large village inhabited by approximately 30,000 people. In the village you can also see large concrete buildings such as schools, a mosque and a Christian church. There is, of course, a market on the water, a drinking water collection point, a water ambulance, restaurants and hotels. The place is sometimes called the "Venice of West Africa" but I associate it more with Asia . The place is definitely worth visiting. At the marina there is an office of a private company that deals with water transport. Everyone, from school children to tourists, has to pay for the passage from the village to the marina. The detailed tariff includes various variants depending on the number of people and the time of using the boat.

A visit to Ganvié is absolutely worth it. I only toured southern Benin, but there is no doubt that it is the place that struck me the most. You can only get to the lakeside village by boat. The houses, shops and school etc are all on stilts. The floating market on boats. Where there is soil, they created it to teach children to walk. A unique and fascinating experience.

I ordered a motor taxi to the Ganvie boat station via Gozem - 850 cfa. The journey only takes 30 minutes. An hour's journey by motorboat costs 10,000 cfa and by rowboat (1.5 hours) 8,000 cfa. After 30 minutes, other tourists arrived - two Chinese. This meant that I only paid 5,050 cfa - motorboat with English-speaking guide.
The journey through the stilt village was interesting and at the same time it was impressive what everything is transported on the boats. We also saw a lot of fishermen. I didn't take many photos because I had the impression that some of them didn't want to be photographed. On the way we made a short stop at a souvenir shop - two key rings 3000 cfa. There are certainly better souvenir shops.
Unfortunately I couldn't order a Gozem on the way back (the app only works in Cotounou) and had to take a normal motor taxi: 1,500 cfa.

I went there for work and has no expectation. Hence I was very surprised by how nice and vibrant the place was. So much to see between floating markets, houses, fishing areas, etc. They even have some hotels and small gift shops with locally made stuff (good way to support the local community). Great day out

Managed to organize a boat through Edouard Houmenou +229 96311011 who also acted as a tour guide for our trip and was very knowledgable about the different floating markets, fishing techniques and different villages on the lake including Ganvie. The docks are about 45 minutes from Cotonou so it's an easy day trip. Edouard arranged to take us to a village at the far end of the lake called Dekanmey which has a diety which protects the residents from ligthning. Great trip but unfortunately it rained in the morning the day the trip was organized and there was overcast skies most of the day.

Depending on traffic, you get quickly to the departure point from Cotonou. A great 1hour+ outing to see how people live every day on the water and what their live looks like in 'The Venice of Africa'.
