We took a a tuk tuk from stone town old port (10,000 shilling). Paid 5 dollars pp .entrance as displayed. The guy showed us round. Very knowleable about the history . Hopefully someday it will be fully renovated. A large site . Worth the visit. We walked for 10 min to the marumbi site after.

Fascinating ruins and history especially about Princess Salame who was born in 1844 and was favoured daughter of Said bin Sultan, the first sultan of Zanzibar (and also ruled as Sultan of Oman which is where he came from). The ruins are now in a poor state but enough remains to imagine the scene with the sultans large harem of consorts using the multiple baths, heated pools and sauna. Princess Salame before she died in Germany wrote extensively about the palace. Entrance is good value (note year 2024) at around 12000tsh for adults and 5000tsh for children. Nice team running the site who tell me that there are negotiations between Oman and Tanzanian governments about renovating the palace to it's original glory. Would be amazing to see if they ever manage to move ahead with that.

We went there in the morning for a small tour. There is a (very nice and enthousiastic) guide you have to use for 10.000 shilling and he shows you around and tells stories about the first sultan and his family who lived there. If you are interested in a bit of history and want to see ruins of a beautiful palace, you should definetely go here. You can combine it with a visit to the Maruhubi historical sites which are closeby. The ruins are about 5 kilometers from Stone Town. We asked our driver to make the 2 stops when we arranged our transport from the north to stone town. Because of the stops (took about an hour in total), we agreed to pay 10.000shilling more than the 40.000shilling we would otherwise had paid for the trip to stone town from kendwa.

We asked our driver to stop here and we did a brief tour. They even take a card for the small payment. Part of the historic past of Zanzibar and notable figures made this their home.

Inte mycket att se men för den kulturintresserade finns det en del godbitar. När vi var där så var vi i stort sett ensamma och hade information från google till hands då informationen på plats är knapphändig.

We signed up for a traditional Zanzibari cooking class, not knowing what to expect. It was great - from shopping in the market to grinding coconut to cooking sesame naan over a charcoal fire, we really got the full experience. The palace ruins made for a lovely backdrop.

It seemed very neglected -compared to European standards. We went there with a guide who had a book & seemed very knowledgeable. Not sure if you could go unescorted. There is no information around the site so you would need to take a guide book .We learnt a lot about the Sultans, Princess Salme - & the plumbing! Good to include if you are walking around Stonetown.

This is a site steeped in history, however, there is only one informational sign and the building is in disrepair. This is a diamond in the rough with tremendous potential as a cultural & historical tourist site if preservation and restoration were to occur. Hiring a knowledgeable guide is highly recommended. We hired Anjam with Different Tours and he brought this site to life.
The ruins photograph beautiful and is wonderful for photo enthusiast. Shadows and architectural lines provide nice texture and background for photos. This should be a stop for any lover of history or photography-just do not expect grandeur like the ruins of Angkor Wat or Giza or preservation to the likes of European palaces.

We saw this in conjunction with a city tour since it’s a bit out of Stone Town and requires a driver and guide. It was a fascinating tour and the guide had pictures that showed what it looked like when it was constructed. The sultan knew what he was doing when he constructed his seaside palace. There were separate rooms for bathing and spa treatments. There were rooms for his various wives and servants and guests. You can’t really appreciate it without a guide since there are no signs in English or Swahili. It helped to see what the palace looked like originally, and you can only imagine what it might have been like to be a guest of the Sultan during the time. It’s definitely an important historical location you should see on your trip.
