I absolutely LOVED this museum! The garden is very peaceful/ relaxing and the staff very welcoming/ friendly. I found it randomly while visiting Staten Island’s “Historic Richmond Town” and was able to squeeze in a last minute private tour right before closing time. The collection of unique art on display is truly breathtaking and there’s a spiritual/healing energy that’s felt while inside of the museum.
I also love that this place is involved with the community and hosts a variety of events (of which I am eager to participate in). If you’re currently on the Staten Island or planning to visit definitely check this place out.

For a Tibetan art enthusiast, this is probably a Shangri-La. Those with a scant interest in Tibetan art will probably leave with even less interest. For the uninitiated, the meanings and purpose for the artifacts will remain a mystery. The museum is more of an old curiosity shop with objets d’art in various states of display from those elevated on a dais to those in dusty glass cabinets or hidden behind larger pieces. Boxes abound haphazardly placed and holes in the walls and ceiling undergoing repairs add to the jumble. No written explanations are given, but a very friendly curator showed us around sharing one or two basic facts on whatever we asked about (you cannot wander at your own pace). The museum building was designed to look like a Tibetan monastery, and could make for a good photo, but the chaotic interior detracts from the craftsmanship. Like the rest of the museum, the garden out back is in need of care, not an oasis.

For those living in Staten Island, dropping by on the way to another spot might be worth the effort. Those coming from other boroughs, it (one hour forty minutes from Manhattan) is a long trek for a 20 minute visit. Ending on a positive note, the price is not unreasonable.

This neglected museum needs some love from Tibetan art enthusiasts.

The Jacques Marchais Museum brings a lot of charm and atmosphere to an unlikely location.. This is a small museum that can easily be visited in about an hour. The architecture seems to be rather authentic. I have visited Tibet and found the museum and grounds to be evocative of my time in that country. The setting is bucolic and calming. When my wife and I visited, as we entered it was explained that the museum had just reopened for visitors. And was still in need of sprucing up. I would say that this was true.
However I did very much enjoy my visit to this museum devoted to Tibetan art in such an unexpected location.

Set out by bus from St Georges Ferry to the Tibetan Museum late on a cold winter afternoon. There is an uphill walk from the bus stop to the museum of about fifteen minutes. We arrived in a fading light to find the large entrance doors locked shut and it was another visitor leaving by a side door who pointed out the entry. Inside we were disapointed by the state of the principal room, dusty and badly lit. The garden appeared neglected though that could have been the season and the access to what appeared to be a basement room was blocked with an irrigation hosepipe dumped there. Our guidebook implied there would be some thousand exhibits from Tibet collected by the originator Jacques Marchais but found few in evidence we were disappointed talked for a short while with the curator and then left. I hope it is a museum that is in the throes of refurbishment and will be better organised in the future. The only recommendation for tourists or visitors would be to find some peace and quiet in the gardens in summer. I recommend telephoning before setting off on this visit to ensure it is open.

A nice small museum nestled on the side of Lighthouse hill that provides a tranquil outdoor garden with an interesting collection of Tibetan Art. There is limited off-street parking but this did not present a problem for us.Somewhat off the beaten path.

We were looking forward to a visit to this well regarded museum and its collection and ventured there in late April only to find a sad, sad, dirty, deteriorated mess, hardly deserving of the word "museum." Elements of the exquisite collection (as I remembered from a previous visit some years ago) were strewn about so haphazardly that it looked as if we had stumbled into someone's old attic. Various work supplies were visible everywhere, boxes, bags, cartons tools, etc., as if they were important parts of the collection. Garden benches were piled with big plastic bags labled "mulch," a koi pond was overgrown with vegetation and filled with rancid, brackish dirty water in which no fish of any species could likely survive. Garden walkways were dirty and unswept, antique crane sculptures were haphazardly used as rudimentary doorstops. There was peeling paint and peeling plaster visible in several areas, and the place -- besides being a disorganized mess -- was noticeably dirty, just plain dirty. This mess is a horrible disrespect to the museum's founder, the woman who went by the name Jacques Marchais. We happened to meet "Meg" the executive director who had all manner of excuses for the mess, but the fact is, when people blame "money" for all of their problems, you can usually see, as is clearly the case here, the biggest problem is obviously lazy neglect. Those who manage this once gem of a museum should be ashamed of how they have allowed it to become such a shabby, dirty, disorganized mess. For shame!

This is an amazing little gem hidden away on Staten Island's Lighthouse hill. A small but wonderful haven that features an interesting Tibetan collection and peaceful garden.
