Bwindi is definitely the more known, and maybe even more popular park to trek gorillas, but after research my husband and I opted for the less popular Mgahinga. Of course, I can't compare my trek to Bwindi (since I haven't been there), but from what we experienced, we couldn't have been more happy with our choice!
There is only one family of gorillas in Mgahinga, but because of that there are very few tourists and people you encounter-- in fact, besides us two, there were only two other tourists trekking with us! The trek starts at 8am. We got there early, because there is a bit of an uphill hike to even get to the entrance to the park -- vehicles can't traverse these parts.
We set off up the mountain through the jungle, at a pretty brisk pace. Our trackers up ahead on radio, said that the gorillas were moving away from us so we were hoping to catch them before they moved too far up the mountain. Luckily, our group of four was relatively fit, as we made the uphill climb through the forest. After around 2 hours, we finally came face to face with a GIANT silverback. We followed him around, where he took us to the rest of the family of nine, made up of babies, teenagers, and more grown adult female and multiple silverbacks. From what I heard Magahinga is more open as far as vegetation than Bwindi, which is one of the reasons we chose this park over the other. As photographers, we had more opportunity for unobstructed photos and observations of the gorillas. Speaking of, I couldn't believe how close we actually got to the gorillas! Many times, a giant silverback walked by me, brushing two-three inches from my arm. Actually the baby, walked up and rubbed the leg of the woman trekking with us!
The whole experience was incredible, somehow it even surpassed by already high expectations!
If you are someone who prefers smaller crowds, less tourists, and great guides -- but still want that gorilla up-close experience, I would highly recommend trekking at Mgahinga.

This was a very mind blowing experience. I would recommend it to anyone around. You get to see a lot than you thought you would starting from nature to the community then to learning their history. I was part of the guiding team and surely it was also a nice memory for me to see all of us happy.

What a beautiful experience. I went to trek the extinct volcano as I have already seen the gorillas in Bwindi. Mount Sabyinyo in the distance and the perfect jungle to traverse in between. The guides, rangers and porters, are the most patient considerate and kind people ever. Brilliant sense of humour and they truly kept my spirits up even when I was out of breath. that altitude takes it out of you. The entertainment by the dancers before the trek was wonderful!
The vast amount of information the guide shares, the knowledge they all have pf the surroundings, the nature and that eye for details. they also learn fast what interests you and are happy to show and share.

We visited Mgahinga to see the Golden Monkeys—a rare treat. We were a group of just 2 visitors, but the teams rolled out the red carpet anyway. After a celebratory dance to start, our porters, guards and guide led us to the where the trackers had found a golden monkey troop. We were treated to 20 minutes in the middle of golden monkey kindergarten playtime. The little ones were swinging, jumping, bouncing and play-fighting all around us—under the watchful eye of the alpha male. What a delight! All of the support staff were friendly, helpful, and especially knowledgeable about the area and its wild residents. Well worth the time!

Wonderful wildlife experience
Being a meter or two from the gorillas is something magical, I never thought it would feel this exciting.
The walk is hard but you stop at your own pace and you get there perfectly. The place is spacious to be able to take good photos of the gorillas.
Super recommended

This was an A++ day. 😊 When we visited, the gorilla family was near the Muhabura Base Camp entrance to the park. This is a short drive out of Kisoro, then a short uphill walk between some local farms to the Mount Muhabura entrance. We had about an hour walk to locate the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family. Once we arrived to the gorilla family we had to wear our face mask to help reduce spread of germs and disease. When we arrived the gorillas were resting. We had great views of them from head to toe (not hidden in dense forest growth). We walked around the area they were resting in and photo’d them. After about 40 minutes of visiting them, they started playing with each other and became more active, which made for great videos as well. We were part of a small trek of 4 people, which made viewing very easy. After our hour of time with Nyakagezi family, we walked a short distance, and then stopped for our sack lunch the hotel had prepared for us that morning. This was a TERRIFIC visit with the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda, that I would not hesitate to do again.

Hi! I am going to Rwanda in December and due to the expensive permit for gorilla trekking there am looking into Mgahina Gorilla trekking permits as it is not too fur. I read it is not guaranteed though that you will see gorillas, and there is only one family.
If that is the case are permits reimbursed?
Or is the chance of seeing them much higher than I am imagining?
Thanks very much! Appreciate any advice.
Skrevet 22. november 2018
Not sure you would get a refund. Check with your tour operator or with the park authoriites. Chances of not seeing the gorillas is almost zero I would think. There is only one group in Mgahinga but they are very well tracked and the forest is not that thick so getting to them is relatively easy. I wouldn't worry about it. We had great experience.

What are the rates for march for gorilla tour
Skrevet 5. desember 2017
Hello kena27201. Sorry about the delay in responding as I have just returned from the Christmas markets in Wroclaw, Poland (highly recommended by the way!). The fees for March are USD$600 per person for Mgahinga and I would hope that this shall remain the same. The prices in Rwanda have risen considerably, but having spoken to the guides in the park it is apparent that the Uganda fees are looking stable at present. The fee covers your entrance to the park and also the indroduction talk and the actual tracking (accompanied by guide, armed ranger and eventually the trackers who monitor the actual movements of the gorillas). After you have spent an hour with the gorillas it is customary to provide a tip to the trackers, and also to the guide/ranger when you return to the trail head. This is a discrectionary tip and the amount is down to you. The guides and trackers do evidently make the experience possible so we gladly paid the tips to all the afforementioned persons with gratitude.
To actually arrange the permits it is highly recommended that you sort this out as far in advance as possible via the Uganda Wildlife Authority website (via email and bank transfer) as they are most helpful and you are assured the day on which you wish to track.
I hope that this assists and I also hope that you manage to undertake this fantastic once in a lifetime experience!

Hi. Would like to know the price ? As I have heard the prices are crazy. Pls get back to me asap.thanks. Hagit.

I went in January 2016. The permit cost $600 but it was worth every penny and more. It was an amazing experience. The wildlife authority do the most incredible job protecting the gorillas from poachers and treating them when they are sick. On top of that you would need to budget for transfers and accommodation but it really is worth the cost.

Hey Adam,
I am heading to Uganda in January for a short visit and would love to visit this park - I read around the internet that it can be quite a bargain to see the gorillas in this park, have you heard anything to that effect? Also, did you use public transit to get there and do you have any recommendations regarding the accommodation?
Thank you for your help!
Skrevet 9. desember 2015
Do I need to book with a tour group to see the gorillas? any recommendation for tour groups?
Thanks!
Skrevet 7. juni 2015
Yes. You really should because they handle the necessary permits required to enter the park. You have to be scheduled. I recommend
Mountain Gorilla Coffee Tours.
