We choose to visit this particular cave after researching and reading previous reviews. I suffer from osteoarthritis in one knee so felt quite trepadacious about doing the tour.
Yes there are quite a few steps but the handrails were good and there are walkways to stop on. There was no pressure to hurry along and the group found it's rhythm.
The cave itself is quite magnificent. It is one of the best I have ever visited. The lighting is well done and the guide very knowledgeable. It is truly a wonder of nature and quite unspoilt.
The most steps are on leaving the cave but again plenty of time to get my breath and rest.

Great tour guide, lots of information provided. Awesome cave experience, safe and relatively easy walking along walkways, lots of stairs

Me and my wife visited the Jewel cave on the 28th August 2024 and It was an amazing experience. We had a tour guide named Garry and he made the tour exceptionally great. He was so kind and very humble throughout the tour answered all our questions with a great spirit even though it was last tour of the day. It’s always the tour guides who make the tour memorable and Garry did that 100%. Thank you Garry and the Jewel cave management for this unbelievable experience. Cheers, Valentina and Ram.

Fantastic tour, well organised, informative. Lasts about an hour, we were led through three large chambers. The path is based on a wooden pathway with a steel handrail. Lighting on the path is good.
Those with mobility issues or breathing problems will find the large number of stairs, many quite steep, a challenge. Some people on our group were clearly out of breath by the time they excited the caves. It is worth discussing this aspect with the staff on the front desk.
Having said this it was the most impressive cave we have ever been in. The formations are stunning. As an interesting experience the guide asked the group if they were comfortable with the lights being turned off : this resulted in us standing in total darkness for 30 seconds.
A top tour, well worth it.

The Jewel Cave is amazing. 250 steps down and have to return but worth the experience through the cave. Claire our guide was very informative and could answer all our questions. If you like looking at caves this is an amazing cave to visit.

This cave is definitely the 'jewel' of all the caves we visited. Lots of steps but had lots of viewing stops along the way.

The whole family thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Jewel Cave. There are a lot of stairs, and one member of our group elected not to proceed once at the first landing. We went through several sections of the cave and - while there was a lot to take in - we didn’t feel rushed. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable.
The only negative is that flash photography is allowed. It interrupted longer exposure photos and was generally pretty annoying.

There were a couple of young children when we went. They became a bit restless. At one stage, everyone is asked to be quiet while they turn the lights off and the kids kept flashing their lights and giggling during that time. It’s only an hour tour, I guess it depends on the child. Probably not a lot of fun for them.

Is this tour suitable for pregnant lady?
Skrevet 25. november 2018
Sorry for my late reply. If you are in say the first 5 months of pregnancy I think you would be fine. Its not too exhausting so just take your time and if in doubt ask them there and they will help.

Hi would this cave be suitable for elderly? We r thinking of going in Aug. No mobility issues but previously had heart surgery n typically needs some breaks when climbing long flights of stairs. I heard of mammoth but seems like it also has steep steps though fewer unless we want to be confined to the wheelchair friendly area.
Skrevet 11. juni 2018
Hello juzonesin,
Thank you for your enquiry. Jewel Cave includes 250 steps from top to bottom, it is quite accessible because there are handrails all the way. There are also 6 stopping points during your 1 hour guided tour from which you can catch your breath and admire the stunning beauty of the cave.
However, if you are concerned about the heart condition of the elderly member of your group, I suggest Mammoth Cave. It's an amazing cave and it is self-guided. There are still quite a few steps, but you can take as long as you like to make your way through the massive chambers whilst learning about the extinct animal bones found in the cave, admire the massive cathedral like chambers and marvel over some beautiful crystal formations.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries.
We look forward to welcoming you to Your Margaret River Region.

Hi I want to take my family to the cave but I was wondering can you take a stroller in? I’ve got a 10 month old child so I don’t really want to carry her around the whole time if I can help it
Skrevet 1. januar 2018
Hi, Apologies for the delay I only just saw your question. There are lots of steps in the Jewel cave so a stroller is not very practical. On the other hand there are many stops when you could put your toddler down - making sure he/she is safe eg taking a harness. Hope this helps.

Hi,
how much cost to visit this cave?
And what is a time duration for it and how much it will take normally to see whole cave?
Thanks

Hi, my wife and I visited the Jewel Cave last August. Its well worth it. We bought a ticket that included other attractions such as the Cape Leeuwin light house in an all-inclusive package. I cant remember the cost but we thought it not very expensive and great value. The cave trip runs every hour and takes about an hour so you need to allow up to 2 hours for the whole thing. The visitor centre includes a small exhibition, cafe and shop so you can spend any waiting time without being bored. The cave trip involves many steps so you need clothing suitable for outdoor walking, but not rock-climbing. Id recommend the light house visit in combination which adds up to a good day trip.

Hi,
Where do I get the tickets for both the Jewel cave tour and the light house?
Skrevet 2. desember 2016
We bought our tickets at each venue. It was quite busy, and both tours were well-patronised, even though we were not travelling in the tourist season, so do make sure of the times of tours and get there in plenty of time. The Tourist Office in Augusta was very helpful.

Hi ,
Good day to you .
Can we ( 4 adults ) visit the cave by ourself ?
We are not sure that what time we will reach at the cave ? The arriving time is uncertain.
Is that possible we book the guide upon our arrival ?
What time is the cave closed ?
Thank you
Regards ,
Brandon

You can just turn up at any time when it is open (see the other post). They have a number of young geologists who guide tours regularly so you may wait a short time till the next tour but they have a nice cafe to wait in.

My daughter has Ross river virus and can get very tired and aching muscles. Is there just as many steps to exit the cave as there is to enter. My concern is she would get down but struggle to step back up
Skrevet 28. september 2016
the best cave for you is likely to be Mammoth Cave as that is the most open of all the caves. It is also self-guided so you can take your time and not worry about keeping up with a guided tour. If a wheel chair is required, Mammoth is the only cave that has some wheelchair access - approx 20% of the cave is wheelchair accessible.
Skrevet 29. september 2016
I am a caver and depending on your comfort level Jewel and Lake caves are good although access to Lake is via a steep stairway.
Mammoth is interesting and worth a visit. If your time is restricted l would go to Jewel.
