If you are ever in this area, this place is so worth seeing. Great views, interesting hike to the top from the parking lot, or you can take the tunnel and elevator instead.
The road up is steeper than usual, so a lower gear is needed coming down. There is a toll. It's not too much. In the visitors center by the parking lot are restrooms and a gift shop. The hike from the visitors center to the viewing area at the top is steep, but short. It consists of steps and existing rocks. It has rails on the sides for safety. I went up but took the elevator down, because it looked harder going down.

Took the ride up which is worth it itself, with plenty of places to pull over and admire the views. The hike or elevator to the top was also a must do as the views were spectacular and there are fun rocks to climb around on.

The Little Whiteface Cloudsplitter Gondola ride, was one of the highlights of our bus trip to New York. The ride up the mountain was pleasant with lots to see and was long. Each time we thought we were at the top we went over a rise and kept going. The views were breathtaking. If you’re in this area you don’t want to miss this.

Beautiful spot. There are 2 ways to reach the summit from the parking area - take the stairs & then hike up the summit nature trail or walk through a long, stone-carved tunnel to reach an elevator. Keep in mind, that once the stairs end, you’ll be climbing over boulders to get to the summit. Also, be prepared for cooler temperatures & wind gusts. The drive up Veterans’ Memorial Highway cost $20/driver, $20/2nd passenger, and $10 for each additional passenger. Ages 6 & under are free. There is no same day return visit.

The Cloudsplitter Gondola ride was amazing! The views were outstanding from the top of the gondola ride, but be sure to take the Veterans Memorial Highway to the absolute top of the mountain too!

Great views! We appreciated the tunnel and elevator to get up to the peak. We used the stairs to descend.

Gondola ride - overpriced. $25 per person. Obviously a fantastic view but they should charge $10 a person. Glad I did it but never again.

I was trying to find a review of whiteface mountain on Yelp, but instead, I found a review of a ski resort with the same name so don't get confused... it's a review of Whiteface Mountain...
Overlooking Lake Placid is one of the tallest peaks in New York State, and one of its most prominent ski destinations – Whiteface Mountain. One of the main hubs of activity, no matter the season. It is located in the NY town of Wilmington, about 13 miles outside of Lake Placid.
Standing proudly at 4,867 feet, this natural wonder is the 5th tallest mountain in the whole New York state. With a bevy of trails, this mountain is a prime spot for riding, skiing, and hiking. Even better, the views from this mountain are to die for.
There are multiple ways to view and reach the top of Whiteface Mountain, including the Veteran’s Memorial Highway, Gondola rides, and hiking.
The mountain has 90 trails, with more than 22 miles of skiing and riding. The longest run is the Wilmington Trail, which is just over two miles.
Fact: It was home to the six alpine ski events in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
The summit of Whiteface offers 360-degree views that span as far as Canada and Vermont on clear days.
if you are taking Veteran’s Memorial Highway - It's $20 /PP fee. This scenic drive winds its way up the mountain giving way to some spectacular photo ops along the way - including a castle. From the castle, it's a 20-minute hike to the peak of Whiteface Mountain,
We took the highway, it's a very easy drive plus we wanted to visit the Summit Weather Observatory, and there is a lift to reach to summit, where you have seen the lift to reach the summit? I have never seen a lift installed in the mountain like this. Lift is for 5 persons only at a time, and takes almost 30-40 secs to reach the top. it is equal to a 24-floor building.
Also, the gondola is more fun in winter, in summer it will take you to just an overlook spot, I would suggest coming via highway. In fact, from the summit, you can see this gondola point, it’s higher than the gondola point.
(just make sure while coming down, use low gears- typical suggestion- but it's important)
Parking: ample parking spot, one staff will stop you, provides useful info and tell you how/where to park.
One food truck was there serving typical fries, sandwiches, and burgers.
Restroom & Git shop - is there too…!!

Just amazing. Black flies were there but still bunch of fun to see again. Gorgeous. We are older and found it easier to walk down as verses up.

There is an access road going to just below the summit. There is a trail to the summit from Wilmington--9.4 miles roundtrip and rated difficult. To get a definitive answer about walking the road, please call (518) 523-2445.

I am an adult that has never skied a day in my life. Is it possible for me to ride beginner trails without going on the ski lifts?

New York City, NY11 bidrag
Yes, there are some surface lifts that don't require a lift ticket but unless you hike a little after every run, the rest of the beginner terrain is accessed by lifts.

You can drive to the summit from around mid May to Columbus day weekend, so you should be fine unless there is lightning or something.
Pets allowed? Small dog?

I would only bring a dog that is well-trained on a leash. This is not walking down Broadway. There big boulders and while it is safe for walking, if your dog got distracted and yanked you at the wrong time, you could get injured.
Leave the dog home.

Cab you hike the whiteface even when light rain? (Like this sunday projections?) is it worth it?

Why not? There is a saying up here, "if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes". When I did Ester/Whiteface, it was a beautiful, cool, sunny Columbus Day. After I made summit, I stopped and drank water, and ate my tuna fish sandwich. I looked west over Lake Placid, and I saw a squall line approaching. By the time,
I finished lunch, and put on a jacket, Whiteface was in the middle of a mini-blizzard, and visibility was well under 100 ft.
Thank God, I carried a compass and a map, because without it, I would not have gone the right direction down (I had elected to descend the east face, down The Slides, and meet a buddy in the ski area's parking lot.)
Moral of the story-- Come prepared, be safe, and enjoy whatever Mr. Whiteface gives you.

Can you avoid the steep drive down by taking the gondola? I'm to plan ahead, and idk how good we'll feel in the car
Also, how long would you say it all takes, including looking at the castle

You should visit the website—honestly, we have visited LakebPlacid for 40 years and always admired the mountain, so we took the veterans highway drive up—it’s pretty but my husband has heart issues so we didn’t stay long —there is a ski jump gondola ride—but that doesn’t go to the tippy top—I maybe a 20 minute drive e to the top? Make sure you shift your car into low for drive down as to not where out brakes —there are places to pull over too—hope that helps—we will forever admire its beauty and wonder from below, though!
