What an awesome experience it was spending about an hour with Mr. Jack Dellinger. What a life he has led (ask him about drinking beer with Neil Armstrong and working alongside Von Braun!!!!). It was also amazing to hear all about the history of the mill, which he has lovingly restored to its former glory! He’s the fourth generation of Dellingers to work the mill. He set the wheel in motion for us and we took some grits and cornmeal home with us. What a gem of a place! Open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 to 4.

We went to see the old Grist Mill and were delighted to hear from 90 year old Jack about the mill's history. But, more interesting was hearing about Jack's impressive life. We left with grits and meal. So far, I've made cornbread for the first time using the recipe on the bag and it was delicious!
We highly recommend a stop by the Mill. You can make a short or long visit. I hope it's a highlight of your trip as it was for us.

An authentic working grist mill lovingly restored by a family member Jack Dellinger. Lovely setting next to Cane Creek. Open to the public but not every day. Hours posted on a sign in Bakersvillle and at the entrance to the mill.

We were there mid April and they were closed. There would be no place to park a small class c motor home, even if they were open. I'm sure I would have given a higher rating if they had been open and I wasn't driving an rv. Oh, and it was a rainy day.

We went to Dellinger's Mill and ended up being there for hours. I could sit there all day and listen to Mr. Dellinger's stories. He was a wealth of knowledge and his love for this mill shows in everything he does. Make the trip and visit this mill and Mr. Dellinger.

What a cool little place. Went there with my family and we loved it. We met Mr. Dellinger and he talked about his family history and the mill and of course the process of making the products from Corn including Grits, Meal, and Polenta. And of course the mill was running so you can get up close and personal with the process. There is a web site so you can check it out in advance if you like.

We also had some trouble finding the mill as others have indicated. We saw the sign that says 4 miles but unfortunately we must have turned around just before actually reaching the mill. FYI the mill address is now officially 4020 Cane Creek Road. Put that in your GPS and you will get there. No GPS? Just turn at the sign in Bakersville and keep going and you will come to a large sign and a bit later you will find the mill on your right. Sorry I don't know the actual mileage but it is more than 4 miles but less than let's say 8 miles. I think. Good luck... it is definitely there and definitely worth visiting. As of my visit 3 days ago it was only open on Fridays from 10am-4pm.

This historic grist mill has been restored to working condition. You and your children can learn how grist mills operate, how corn meal, grits and other grain products are made. The gentleman who operates the mill is a descendant of the original owners, and since he retired, he has dedicated a great deal of time to bringing back this historic jewel and presenting it to the public. He has tales of the area as well as the mill, and you will be entertained for as long as you want to visit.
Plan to spend at least an hour, but stay longer if you can.
Look for the sign on Highway 226 just south of the traffic light in downtown Bakersville, NC and drive about 4 miles to the mill on the right. Not a lot of parking, but it usually isn't crowded.
Take home a fresh bag of corn meal and enjoy some good old southern cornbread!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Grist Mill and meeting Mr. Dellinger. It was interesting to hear the history of the mill, which is owned and operated by Jack, the great grandson of the man who built it. Equally as interesting was hearing about Jack's life history.
It was wonderful to learn how the mill was repaired after years of disuse, and to see it operate was great. I'm looking forward to making cornbread and grits with the products we purchased ( recipes included).
If you are at all interested in history - it's totally worth the time to stop by. Just be sure to check his website for his hours and dates of operation ( not open in winter).
Small children would likely be bored, but older teens who are interested in history might enjoy it. There are no restrooms, and parking is limited to about 5 vehicles.

We were in Bakersville and saw a sign that said "grist mill" 4 miles so we were interested. We asked in a store about the road and were told that it was good so we decided to go. We found out that the mill is only open on Fridays and Saturdays so we were in luck. We arrived to find the grist mill was operating but they were working on it. We met Jack Dellinger, the 86 year old owner and descendant of the original owner who took us on a tour of the place. The mill is the last operating grist mill in North Carolina and on the official register of historic places. He told us all about the mill which dates from 1869 and how he had returned to his home and restored the mill. There are products for sale, so we bought some grits which are delicious. We really enjoyed talking to Mr. Dellinger and learning about the mill. It was a great experience!
