We walked thru here while on a tour of the city. Small space but very nicely maintained. Nice to see the old stones and learn some history

The graveyard is run down and needs some care and attention. Tombstones broken and need repairs. Sad really.

Old settlers cemetery
We did a history, graveyard walking tour. Our tour guide was great informative and very animated. We learned a lot about the history of this particular graveyard. For instants, the gravesites/stones that we saw where from the graves a wealthy people.
They were buried on top and then the grave started trickling down to what they believe is layers and layers and layers surrounding the cemetery. They are at sidewalk level, what they believe is that the poor people were buried on top of each other, they don’t know how deep or how many are buried there.
I went back the next day to get some better pictures, I WOULD recommend a tour of this place to get the history.

This is part of the Charlotte Liberty Walk (that some how most people living there, including the police officers I tried to ask info of, don't really know about).
I have always found cemeteries interesting places and like to see how the dead have been treated in different places at different points in history. There is a map on a (bronze) plaque at the entrance that lists who is where. I didn't really find it helpful because there was way too much to figure out. Still interesting though.
I highly recommend doing the full Liberty Walk. It doesn't take that long and is really informative, once you find the right place to get info. I picked up the follow-along brochure at the Visitor Center on MLK, between Brevard and College. So much history in Charlotte that it is worth learning about some of it. There are also plenty of places to eat along the path.

Liberty Walk is a self guided walking tour through Uptown Charlotte. It is marked by informative historical plaques in the sidewalk. You can also get a brochure with more information from the visitors bureau in the convention center. I highly recommend the walking tour itself for an informative look into Charlotte’s history.
Old Settlers Cemetery is one of the stops on Liberty Walk, located at 5th and Church. The cemetery is small and reasonably well maintained. There is a sign that identifies many of the graves, although many of the gravestones are well worn with the passage of time and difficult to read. A quick stroll through the cemetery won’t take you much time and is worth a quick visit if you are in the area. Also worth seeing are the many plaques on the 5th St wall, which provide many different pieces of historical information about this area of Charlotte.

Visitors should spent a hour here reading the bronze plaques and head stones.
Walk thru the park and try to recall the possibilities of life back then versus the modern times seen in the skyline surrounding. The old Presbyterian church on the south side, Science Museum north and then residential and corporate buildings surround.
Then walk Tryon St for the historical markers.
Wish the city would tend to the park more. Some dis-repair. Love history!!

We visited here, frankly because there didn't seem to be any other historical sites in downtown Charlotte. The cemetery is relatively small, and the graves are not well marked or maintained. I suggest combing a quick look here with a walking tour along the adjacent "Liberty Walk" around the rest of the small downtown area.

First off, you cannot compare this cemetery to any of the cemeteries around Boston or Philadelphia. I was looking for things to do while in Charlotte and followed the Liberty Trail and ended the trail at the Old Settlers Cemetery. I really like old historic cemeteries and enjoy learning about the significance of the buried residents. Unfortunately, I left the cemetery not really knowing or recognizing anyone here. There was a small plaque with information on the cemetery but almost nothing on the people buried here. Overall, the cemetery itself is pretty. It is located next to a historic church in a quieter part of town. The plot seems to be well taken care of but you can hardly recognize any marking or writings on the graves. If you are in Charlotte, I do recommend walking the Liberty Trail, and making your way to the Old Settlers Cemetery.
