Don't let the reviews here keep you from going to Pink Beds Trail. We had a good rain shower here Sunday. We went on Tuesday to Pink Beds and what little mud there was, we could easily walk around it. Some tree roots, but easy to walk over. Hey, it's in a forest; did you expect not to find some tree roots? Beautiful flowers blooming, nice boardwalks, bridges, a series of babbling brooks and streams, and the crew was busy when we were there working on the trail. Trail was well marked. We stopped at the picnic grove in the meadow and ate our packed lunch. Beautiful day. The reviews I saw here were all a few years old. Maybe it was bad back then, but it was great in June of 2023 when we were there.

This is an easy hike (although longer than most easy hikes). Since it is in a wet county it will be muddy so be prepared. The forests are beautiful and you have several water front areas as well.

After seeing every review on here is about the daytime, I think it’s about time someone writes about the nocturnal beauty.
I arrived here about an hour before sunset to get prepared to see the blue ghost fireflies. There were a LOT of people here at that time! There were several buses that dropped volleyball players and fans here, which was very noisy. Thankfully, though, they all left about a half hour later. I also met some geology students there that were camping overnight in the fields near the start of the trail. There was a lady (I’m pretty sure one of the geology teachers) who had been here during firefly peak numerous times and gave me directions as to where the best sightings of them might be-take a left at the beginning of the loop.
The sightings of the fireflies going left were SPECTACULAR!!!! I didn’t expect to see sooo many synchronous fireflies!!!! They lit up the fields in the area (I think they’re better near Elkmont campground, GSMNP though). The Blue Ghosts were AMAZING!!!!! I saw up to thirty floating around in openings of the trees (not in fields like the synchronous) at the same time, mostly at about waist level. It felt like you were in the movie “Hobbit”, on another planet. It actually made me tear up a little, getting to see such an epic, rare firefly show. Frankly, being in the forest at night, with such unusual beauty, should be an experience everyone who loves nature should experience at least once in their lifetime.
Suggestions
1) Camera settings I used to photograph the Blue Ghosts were: 30 second aperature, f2.8 (you only can get as low as the lowest f-stop on your camera lens) and ISO of 12,800. I also put my lens to manual setting and put it to infinity (it looks like an 8 at the left hand of your lens ring). Those numbers can vary though, based on your DSLR camera gear. Experienced DSLR users know this stuff I’m sure.
2) Make sure to bring toilet paper to use the bathroom as necessary. When I needed to use some, there was none in any of the restrooms, due to all the people that were there beforehand.
3) Please use only a red or blue headlamp to see on the trail because white light will turn the lights of the fireflies off. They may not turn back on for a long time, if at all that night, ruining the experience for a lot of people. You can cover a white light with red cellophane (At Elkmont, GSMNP the volunteers give away red cellophane to cover white bulb flashlights). Please use the light only on the ground in front of you so no one gets blinded or distracted.
4) Please stay on the trail. If you don’t, you’ll contribute to ruining their habitat. We all want to contribute to maintaining and promoting even better experiences for others, right?
5). The deeper in the forest you go, I was told the better the experience. I didn’t go that far in, due to being alone. I stayed not too far from where the campers were staying so that if anything happened, I could yell for help. There are bears in the area. Not to scare anyone, but black bears are largely nocturnal. They’re generally pretty docile, but on rare occasions have been aggressive with humans.
In conclusion, due to the rare nighttime bioluminescent beauty here, I would recommend anyone to come. Please be super careful though. There has been such a heavy traffic of people coming to see this rare phenomena, there are some trails that have to be closed in the Pisgah forest during late May and part of June to help preserve the Blue Ghosts, one of the rarest fireflies on planet earth.

I've never disliked a hike until now. Mud soaked and tree roots everywhere. I mean layers and layers of tree roots on most of the trail...your feet aren't even touching the ground. You couldn't even look up to enjoy nature because you had to be looking at your feet the whole time trying not to twist an ankle, slide in the mud or trip. Trails could be marked a lot better too... very easy to take the "5+ mile loop" over and over. Could be a sweet area for a picnic. "Pink Beds"... no big deal... I've seen better. There are so many beautiful trails in NC and this area, would never hike this one again.

I gave it an average because of the condition of the trails. We took the entire 6 mile loop and between seeing some beautiful trees and butterflies, we were slogging through mud pits. It's probably great fun for bikers, tons of roots and the aforementioned mud but families with kids might not want to venture far from the water at the beginning of the trail. Very nice picnic area with well kept bathrooms.

Great, easy, pretty trail with lots of winding boardwalks and trails through the forest. It is a loop trail that has little ups and downs, goes alongside lots of water, and just has a few rocks and roots to walk over. The rhodedendrons were blooming, and some flat fields were filled with wildflowers. Lots of bridges and streams. There are also picnic tables at the beginning. We did it in a light rain, and it was delightful. This is very popular, and the parking lot can fill up!

I biked this trail and it is beautiful. It is an out and back trail with elevation changes and lots of roots. Also beautiful wildflowers and birds. Not suitable for bikes other than mountain bikes. It is listed as easy. I think challenging is a better description. I accidentally took my bike on the walking trails. Big mistake. The walking trails have obstacles and water crossings that are not suitable for bikes. Had fun anyway.

Easy hike off of pink beds picnic area. You can walk right into the wetlands and see animals and insects.

From a large park with a wide open field and picnic tables you can take this trail into the forest. There were numerous butterfly flowers full of butterflies.

If you want to hike, bird or do a beautiful, leisurely walk - this is a perfect trail for you. Pets on leashes are welcome.

My experience included wonderful streams, trees and vegetation. For birders there were warblers, hawks and a variety of other birds.

While Pink Beds was once pink, for some reason, I didn't see anything pink except for some wildflowers. If you're in the area and have at least an hour, it's worth the stop. Also a nice picnic spot.
