I've been on a bit of a NC history kick and this place was super super nice. Well curated and lots of cool details. A lot to love.

First of all, IT’S FREE - even to non-residents. It is so nice of the people of North Carolina to provide this attraction to everyone. Upon entry, the interior was welcoming, spacious, and clean. The exhibits were well-done and easy to follow, chronologically. The museum is a well-organized walk-through story unlike other state history museums I have visited.

Free to enter and really interesting. Gives you the history of North Carolina. Give yourself at least 2 to 3 hours to get through it. They have some old houses in there too from the past which were really cool. Go before October of this year because they are about to shut down for renovation.

The ground floor exhibit on the story of North Carolina is world-class. The third floor exhibit space was undergoing renovation so I didn't see it. From my understanding, the ground floor exhibit is also about to be renovated, so this review may be overcome by events in short order. But, having made a habit of visiting state history museums (Virginia, Washington, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, Tennessee, now North Carolina) I can say that I cannot recall another state history exhibit as comprehensive and universally interesting as this one. Washington comes close, but was more kid-oriented and explained things in a manner a little too basic for my tastes. North Carolina did it right - interactive exhibits, loads of artifacts, videos, sounds, and a real focus on the most formative aspects of North Carolina history - industry/agriculture, the Civil War, and early contact between Europeans and Native Americans. Simply fascinating stuff. I did, however, deduct one star for the Civil War exhibit's inclusion of some Lost Cause mythology - the intro video and several of the signs state that NC was part of the Confederacy to support their neighbors, rather than defend the institution of slavery, and I thought we were long past that lie. Besides that though, the Civil War artifacts and the details of North Carolinian activity, service, and key events during the war were very well presented and I would change nothing about that exhibit, aside from eliminating the excuse of neighborly support. And to its credit, the reconstruction exhibit features a horrifying KKK mask and doesn't make light of the hardships endured by black people in the late 19th century.
We visited on a Saturday so street parking nearby was free, and we were able to walk the Capitol area, tour this museum, and see the City of Raleigh museum on the other side of the plaza all in an afternoon.

Free admission! We stopped in on a Sunday at around 1 and spent probably about 40 minutes here. If you're interested in learning about North Carolina's history (including development, trades, slavery), then this is a good museum to go to. It wasn't too crowded when we went, so that was nice. I have a feeling it probably gets crowded on weekdays with school trips. I do wish there were more benches around though. The museum is set up in a way that you kind of just follow one path, so if you needed to take a break, there's really nowhere to sit. It's a quick visit though, but just something to keep in mind.

Wow! You can’t beat being able to go to a museum in the heart of the city for free! We started on the top floor and thought the museum was just ok, nothing very special (sports memorabilia, small kids section, etc). But then we did the exhibits on the bottom floor and loved it. Learning about NC history was interesting and the bottom floor of the museum was very well done. We enjoyed looking at old artifacts and they even had a couple of old buildings inside (not just replicas). There is also a nice gift shop on the bottom floor. There is parking on the street or in lots nearby. A great way to spend some time in the city.

We had a great experience with our 3 year old. While the majority of the displays were over his head, he enjoyed everything and the museum staff and volunteers helped engage him in interactive exhibits.

We love these places where you are encouraged to touch things to learn! Lift the flaps, milk the cow, push the button. Exhibits are well organized memorable.

It's FREE so why not? Is it the most spectacular history museum? Absolutely not, but it presents an awesome history, military, and more, of North Carolina. Some areas were not open, yet we still managed to spend a chunk of time here seeing everything but the children's interactive section (we were all 18 and over). Again, it's a great, FREE opportunity so go and check it out!

Yes you learn but other than one in depth explanation on the Wilmington riots, not much substance. on many other aspects. Kinda glossed over the Civil Rights march as if it were my museum, more on the lunch counter sit-ins.

I think they have wheel chairs for rent. However, best would be to go online with any search engine find their home page and either find what they have or call the number on their web site just to make sure.

How long does it take to tour the museum? I'm asking because I'd like to go on a Sunday when the hours are shorter.
Skrevet 2. mai 2017
It can be done in 3 - 4 depending on your level of interest.
Skrevet 26. august 2017
It is free except for some special exhibits.
