This is a very nice place. The fact it is free is very nice feature. Some of the videos didn’t exactly correctly show history but for the average consumer they would not see the distinction.
The special you have to pay for were a bit expensive for what they were showing so I’m not sure if those are worth it.

Coming from Chicago where the museum are huge I did expect more. but for "FREE it was good. Really got a great understanding of NC.

Amazing time with the family. FREE admission to boot, I’ve had a better experience here then at most museums I’ve paid for. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic museum. It really does give a warts and all account of North Carolina's history. One of the best I've been to. But do prepare to be put through the wringer. This museum is brave and does not sugar coat history.

12/28/22 - My daughter brought us here, and I have to say I loved the place, and so did my grand-kids. what history. I love history, and this place has it. The candy and soda fountain store brought back memories of when I was a kid going to the candy store back in NJ. I could of spent hours there, but we were short on time. When I'm back in Raleigh, I would like to go back again, I highly recommend this place. Great place to know about North Carolina history...

This museum is a hidden gem. I have been to state museums around the country and this is one of the best. It is also free, unless you choose to see the rotating exhibit, which in this case I would not reccomend ( female country singers) It was way to small an exhibit to exert such a charge. Otherwise, you can easily spend 2 hours just on the first floor alone. Dealing with everything from the civl war to the wright brothers to civil rights and everything in between, this museum is a must if you are in town.

This museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and it shows! It does a great job of telling the story of North Carolina residents, from long before it was a colony to modern day. I’ve lived in North Carolina for over 20 years and learned much about the history of the state I now call home. The museum is also in walking distance to several restaurants and the state capitol building. Admission is free; plan about a half day.

Wonderful museum that we almost passed by! So glad we spent a morning here. Learned SO much about North Carolina. Really one of the best museums we have ever visited. Easy to navigate. Very clean ( rest room was spotless). Two floors of exhibits. Parking a bit tricky. Hard to get a street spot. We couldn’t find the museum lot ( underground?) but did find affordable, safe parking across the street. Definitely worth a visit. Out of the 3 museums we visited that day, this was our favorite.

I have always loved history. We moved to North Carolina several years ago, and I especially wanted to learn more about our new state. This museum has impressive exhibits that are top quality, interesting, and beautifully laid out. Though we had no children with us, I did notice that there were children captivated by some features there, and for sports lovers, there is a section dedicated to that as well. We got a kick out of the contents and displays of a pharmacy, which I believe is from the early 1900s, though I don’t recall the date, so I am probably off a little. The gift shop had quite a nice selection, and I found a couple things I really liked. My only wish was that it would have been helpful to have a little seating available occasionally, where space could accommodate it. As an senior with mobility issues, I was limited in how long I could stand, thus limiting my time. What we did was cover the ground floor one day, and returned the following day for the top floor. For most people, this museum can easily be covered in one visit. Parking was easier on Saturday, when street parking is free, than it was during the week.

What a great museum! My family stopped here to kill time when we got to Raleigh before our flights. This is part o the Smithsonian Institute. The museum is free to visit, and it's very clean and laid out. We really enjoyed it here, and will likely return.

Wheelchairs available for rent?

I think they have wheel chairs for rent. However, best would be to go online with any search engine find their home page and either find what they have or call the number on their web site just to make sure.
How long does it take to tour the museum? I'm asking because I'd like to go on a Sunday when the hours are shorter.
