We started our tour with a tour guide at the cable car centre in the Wulingyuan Town. It was in the early afternoon and there was mist/fog hanging around the township. We could not see the Tianmen Mountain from this spot (we could when we touched down just after 11:30am in the morning-sunny and clear) The cable car station was three levels full of tourists so we paid extra (or premium) to bypass the queue. The cable car (max.cap. 8 pax) took us to the top of Tianmen Mountain. We started our walk on the eastern side (red route as indicated in the lay out map). There is a temple but unfortunately, on arrival at the mountain top the whole area was encased by heavy fog and misty/heavy dew-yes, in the middle of the day. So, we pushed on to the glass walk. It did not have the normal glass walk effect on you as the mist and fog "soften" the height/drop under you. The scenery along the track had a mysterious feel to it as some part you could see the clear mountain ranges, other part was just hidden behind the cloud and the mist. The mountain top is nicely layer out in a loop so you can start walking the east and end up in the west (yellow route). By the time we arrived at the base (via a series of escalators) of Tianmen Cave Square (i.e., the area where you could walk the 999 steps to the bottom of the Tiamen Tong), the sun came out and all the fog/mist just disappeared. Not only that, the temperature started to climb. (And became quite humid and hot by the time we got back to Wulingyuan.) This is the spot for taking the complete Tianmen Cave, but only if it is not too crowded. You need to allow at least minimum of three hours to tour the whole place, and this is done with cable car and chair lift, and not climbing the 999 steps to the base of the cave. For us with a private tour guide, it still took us more than three hours to cover the place. Another point to consider is that this place rains quite frequently (our guide said only about 60 rains-free days in a year, one web site said it rains two days out of three), so whilst some websites suggest you allow two days, you may have to factor in the rain-out day. Given a chance, I like to come back again.

An absolutely incredible experience. We went on Sunday 25th June, and were concerned it would be extremely busy as the Dragon Boat Festival public holiday had just finished but we got the first cable car up at 7.30am and felt like we had the place to ourselves for a couple of hours. Even by 11am it was busy but not terrible - we never had to queue for any of the transport, glass walkways etc and there were only a couple of times on the walkways when it felt too crowded.
It's very well managed with signs in English so even if you don't know any Chinese, you will be able to get around easily. I would recommend doing a little reading before to understand what there is to see and the best route to take. From our experience I would suggest ticket A - get the cable car straight up and work your way down.
There are so many incredible views on the ride up and once you get to the top, we spent hours just walking around the circuit at the top of the mountain and taking photo after photo. It is quite controlled - this isn't Zhangjiajie Forrest Park where you can wander off and find a trail. You are walking either way in one big circle through very set pathways that don't have much room for maneuvering or taking a different route.
The glass walkways were not for the feint of heart but an amazing experience. Definitely better at the start of the day when you practically have them to yourself.
In total it took us almost exactly 6 hours from arriving at the cable car station at the bottom to getting the bus back to the same place. We did the full loop around the mountain though and all the glass walkways, then took the escalator down to see Heavens Gate, the smaller cable car after that to take you half-way down, and then finally the bus back to the point we started at the bottom. You could do it quicker if you are in a real rush but its somewhere special that should be savoured.
We bought tickets after arriving in China using the Alipay app - this and WeChat are absolutely essential if you are coming to China. It took a bit of work trying to get the translation right but it's manageable as its hard to buy tickets anywhere else, and if you do they will be more expensive. If you struggle then most hotels can make the booking for you.
An unforgettable experience that I would urge everyone to experience if they visit China - just arrive early and avoid busy periods and from our experience, you'll be fine.

This is a MUST if you are in Zhangjiajie. It’s just as breathtaking as the Avatar mountains.
You will need a day for Tianmen mountain.
It costs RMB275 for cable car and cable car down.
We took the bus up to the first stop of the mountain then walked up to the Cave (mountain with the hole). Then walked up 1,000 steps. The view is amazing.
From there we then took the world’s longest escalator to the top of the mountain. We then went from the West side (yellow route) and followed the mountain edge to the east side ;red route).
We also took the ski lift chair to the pagoda for a magnificent view. We did a return trip. Costs RMB25 one way.
The ski lift chairs is in the middle of the mountain.
There are loads of shops and places to eat. Loads of toilets, very well kept.
We were lucky that it rained the night before so we had all lot of clouds and mist.
An important tip:
Go early and leave around 4pm - 4.30pm.
The return ticket you upon leaving for the cable car down you need to go to the booth near the First Aid Station where you queue up outside for the cable car. You then need to jump onto the next available time slot for the cable car down. You cannot just queue and go because it’s packed! It’s so busy. The queue is astronomically long!!
We left 5.30pm and after finding out about the slotted time we had to wait 1hr before we could even start to queue up. So in total it took us 2hrs. We took the 6.50pm cable car down.
So just make sure you get there upon opening and leave earlier. It will save you a lot of time.
The glass bridge is not that great. RMB5 for the small one. The glass is dirty so you cannot see much.
The cable car going down takes you back to the town Centre and it’s awesome because it goes through town.
I would do this trip again 😊

Second to the Avatar mountains this is the other “must” see on your visit. We took the cable car from the city to the top of the mountain (7.5 km long!!) which gives you beautiful views of the mountain. On the top it was cloudy so we walk around the full top of the mountain and on the western side it opened up so you could enjoy the view and the massive drop below your feet. Do take the glass walkway if you are not scared of heights. It is impressive. The actual cave (or rather hole) is amazing. I suggest first going to the bottom of the 999 steps and the walking up - you really feel the awe of the place.

Sehr gut strukturierte Park.

We arrived at the cable car station at about 9:30 and waited until about 10am to get on the cable car. We didn’t realise there were different tickets available for routes going up and down (only realised this when coming down). We got to the top after a 30 minute cable car ride and walked on the east line. I would suggest walking the west route so that you can do the glass walkway on the west side. The weather got progressively worse abs by the end of our route we could hardly see a thing. The views first thing were amazing and the glass walkways were brilliant. Not much options for food going around so take snacks. When we got back to the top of the cable car they told us we didn’t have the right ticket and needed to go to the tainted cave and go down that way. We didn’t want to do this as we had seen the cave and were tired and wet by this point. They finally allowed us back down the cable car but it took some effort. My suggestion-walk west route and finish by going down to the cave.

We are just back from a 10 days trip to Very Beautiful Hokkaido. Yes, you could take the return via a cable car from Tianmen Mountain - but you probably need to take a reverse route / back track to get back to the cable car station. Remember, the cable car station is not here, but the other side of the mountain. Book your tickets in advance from the starting point. It may be troublesome & very tiring to backtrack, if you already walk the 999 steps down Tianmen Mountain, now its another 999 steps up the very steep mountain, unless again, you booked the lifts & rides all at the same time. We in our 60's could not manage these climbs, let alone some members in the late 70's. But to take in the views, stopping for photography, up close with the waterfalls & the faces of the tourist who managed these challenging climbs, the tendency of tiredness were all forgotten., when victory of achievement of some sort - to reaching the top of the climb. Enjoy but remember check very carefully & book in advance.

I will be visiting Tianmen mountain during morning time - taking the cable car up and escalator down. Which loop on the top do you recommend doing first: EAST or WEST? What's the difference - Is one more scenic than the other?

We took the cable car up ,about 30 minutes once you get into the car. As for how long does it take to walk around depends on the crowds. Use the escalator both ways. Save your knees, going up the stairs is a two edged sword.

Try to go with a group. As this is a very popular tourist attraction, a taxi might prove expensive . People charge more when they know you have limited to no choice.

Hi, I would like to avoid the bus down the 99 bends, how long does it take to walk down? Is it quite steep? Can you take the cable down and is the extra cost expensive? Thank you in advance.

I was terrified of the bus ride as I am very prone to motion sickness but it wasn’t a problem for me at all and I quite enjoyed the ride. I just made sure I was at the front of the bus.
All the corners are numbered as well so you know how you are going.
It definitely isn’t as bad as you, or I think.
Good luck, but give it a go.
