Temple, Temporary Imperial Palace, Museum, Craft Shops, Folk Art Market...a 12000sm complex
jan. 2016 • Alene
As you can find in all guides, and within all maps and as you will see the signs in the city of Yangzhou, this place is known as Tianning Temple of Yangzhou. It is located approx..700m west of Geyuan Garden, opposite the Yangzhou Tourist Information Office. It is a complex of Buildings of 11968sm area, consisted of Entrance Hall, Hall of Heavenly King, Mehavira Hall, Houayuan Pavilion and surrounding buildings (now used as craft shops). Built during Eastern Jin Dynasty period and repaired during Qing Dynasty period, now days functions as museum of Folk and Buddhist Arts. It was also used as temporary residence of the Emperor during his tours in the South. The entrance if free and one can have a nice, relaxing, short tour there to see the big buildings, the collections and enjoy the walk in its yards. The negative point is that there are almost no signs in other language apart from Chinese. Behind this Temple-Museum it is located Chongning Temple and the Complex is also known as "Double Ning". The Unesco sign at the entrance of Tianning Temple marks how unique it is.

This place is not well-known and unlike the gardens and lake will not be packed out.
Maybe this museum is not for everyone; it's better if you know something about Buddhism rather than a secular slant on life.
The displays are excellent and mostly dual language and I like the focus on how China was a bridge for Buddhism into Japan & Korea. Not strangely, no mention of Tibetan Buddhism and that persona no gratis.
I've been twice, the second time I took my Buddhist daughter and she loved it. It rained a bit and it was nice being inside the buildings or on the porches.
A pleasant surprise.

apr. 2013
