Having missed opening time on previous visits, I was lucky to make it when they were open this time. Check the opening times. There are tours, but you can also just wander around.
This museum is one of the best I've been to in a long time. I was able to follow the story of some of the "residents" through the museum; the presentation of records is extensive, the work that has gone into the exhibits is excellent, not in technology but in personalising life in J Ward. Although I wouldn't recommend it for young children, I would say those 12 years up would get something out of it.
Definitely coming back for a tour next time.

Finally got to go on a tour of J Ward and really enjoyed every minute of it. Robert was very knowledgeable and took his time taking us around and telling us the stories about the history and the inmates of this facility. We booked our tickets online and the process was very easy. Parking was available and their was plenty of it. The tour would be of interest to all ages and it only went for just over an hour or so. Next time I am in Ararat I will be visiting Aradale. Such interesting places and so much to learn about them and what went on in our early days of dealing with mental health.

Anne was our guide for the day and she is a lovely lady. She is so knowledgeable and had many stories to tell. There is so much information to read on the walls as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and highly recommend it.

What a fantastic tour! We enjoyed a tour of all of the areas on the grounds including the gardens, the keeper's quarters, married quarters, the cells, the hanging area, the exercise yards, and the amazing museum with so many items for these times including some patient records. Your guide gives an excellent detailed account of the history of the building while you look around the area and read some of the interesting plaques that are displayed throughout the grounds. All of the volunteers that run this grand historical institute are all very knowledgeable and do a fantastic job at retelling the stories of this setting and maintaining its history. Thank you all for your hard work in keeping this amazing part of Ararat history alive for others to experience. I highly recommend a visit here if you are in the area, you will not be disappointed. I certainly will be back.

Went to the J ward gaol in ARARAT,Victoria.
We booked our tickets on line,we arrive and waited in a room that had old pictures of the gaol for our tour guide (ken).Ken was a wonderful guide with plenty of information and stories.
The walk around was fine and one lot of stairs down and another going up.you can take photos, the tour ends in the museum and if you won't is a video played
of a documentary of the prisoners life there which shows them in the court yard and its a must to do as it made a great ending of the tour.my two grandchildren aged 9yrs and 8yrs liked it as it showed them as they say,the older days.

Beryl gave us a great tour of J Ward. It was certainly an eye opener into life in the early days and until quite recent times. For Chopper Reed to say it was the worst jail he had ever been in, is saying something. Worth a visit

Thankyou to Alan for a great tour and all the volunteers who have helped to keep this part of Ararat's history . Fantastic to see his passion for an amazing place with a sad history. If you are in the area it is a total must.

When J Ward was established in 1887, no-one had any idea what to do with violent offenders who were beyond the reach of reason except lock them up forever.. Forensic psychiatry has taken great steps forward in modern times and these days most people who would have spent their lives labeled "criminally insane" can be treated by medication. Of course, some are simply evil but thankfully J-Ward has outlived its usefulness.

Hello, is this the same place as Aradale asylum or completely different places?

Hey Ozee, They are about 10m drive from one another. You should allow about 1-2 hrs for J Ward and 3-4 hours for Aradale. you can get tickets from the Information Center in town and they will provide a map.
