The best way to get to BHI. It helps if you book a reservation beforehand, as you get to board the ferry first. On extremely hot days, sit outside as inside seating gets stuffy.
If you want to go back earlier, you will be asked to wait until those who reserved that time board and then the non-reservation passengers board. If there is any more room you will be able to go back early.

The ferry ride is short (25 min) but scenic, offering great views of Southport and the surrounding area, as you travel back and forth from beautiful Bald Head Island. I was a little surprised at the inside seating area of the ferry, very dirty and worn. It’s a bit of a walk (as much as 10-15 minutes depending on where you find parking, and how fast you can walk) from the general parking area in Southport to the actual ferry (you can drop off people right at the ferry and then go park) so be sure to give yourself time.
We went mid September on a beautiful Saturday and it was plenty busy. I imagine at the height of the summer it’s much more so. They do limit the amount of people on the ferry so it is not overwhelmed, but some definitely need to be outside if full, only a problem if wet and/or cold. Coming back from the Island, even with reservations, we were unable to board at our reserved ferry time, they were about two ferries (2 hours!) behind! I cannot say if the was a common problem or not. Waiting in a long line to board a ferry for a pre reserved and paid for ride was a less than stellar ending to what was otherwise a perfect day! We chose to wander about longer, until the line slowly shortened.

It’s a shame what’s become of the Bald Head Island Ferry system. It’s not quite enough to make us not visit a special place like BHI, but it’s getting awfully close. Completely missed team pickups. Disastrous boarding processes. No one answering phones. Zero communication or support. This isn’t just one or two trips. This is the last handful of visits, exacerbated (it seems) by the change in ownership in 2022. At every step (outside of actually riding the ferry) — customer phone support, online system, arrival and boarding, tram service — it has been a total nightmare, with conflicting or constantly changing information, poor communication, illogical and often inconsistent processes (where any exist at all), and absolutely no accountability or management. This used to be part of the joy of arriving and even departing the island, a lovely bookend to the trip. Now it’s a truly sad reality that, for a wonderful place like Bald Head Island, the first and last memory people have is this ferry experience. Here’s hoping the new ownership sets things right soon.

You buy a ticket and wait in line to board. If the ferry hits capacity you have to stay IN LINE for another hour for the next ferry. If you sit, newcomers can line up in front of you. Why not use a ticketing system? I can’t believe people tolerate this.

This was an awesome experience. We took the ferry from Deep Point Marina in Southport over to Bald Head Island to spend the day. The crew were friendly and professional and the loading/unloading of passengers was organized and efficient. The ferry ride is about 20 minutes over to the island.

The ferry gets very crowded so you may want to get in line to get on the boat early. If you are one of the last to get on you may end up in the front of the boat or the sides and you may get soaked. The cabin is air conditioned.The ferry is clean and leaves on time. Is about a 20 minute ride. I think it was $23 per person.

Several problems which involve the parking signage and drop-off for those who cannot walk very far.
The signage upon entrance gives no clue that it is possible to proceed directly to the "Marina" where you can drop off disabled passengers directly. There should be an addendum to the signs which indicate "Disabled Passenger Drop-off at Terminal". Without that sign, and without a permanent "Permit Parking" permit (for those who live on the island), the only choice is to walk in from a remote parking lot. Quite a detriment for those who are disabled.
The other big problem is that, at the entrance to the parking lot where you have a gate and an automated ticket dispenser, there is a sign that says "Take ticket with you". At most parking facilities, this means that you are going to pay your ticket in advance, prior to leaving the parking facility, at some ticket office. But that isn't the case here (or if it is, it isn't marked again). Instead, you have to take the ticket back to your car and use it to pay at the parking lot exit. If you're disabled and sent someone to the car to get it and come back to pick you up (now that you know that that is possible), it's easy to forget to send that ticket back with the person going to get the car. Without the dumb sign saying "Take ticket with you", we would have left the ticket in the car where it would have been available to the person retrieving the car and leaving the parking lot. Instead we had to send another person BACK to the terminal to get the ticket from the disabled person who was waiting to be picked up. This pretty much ruined what otherwise was a perfect day on Bald Head Island.
Hopefully someone will read this and make some changes to the signage.

About $23 per person for a round-trip ticket. A pleasant ride over, but coming back, I'd recommend getting to the dock early. The ferry taking us home was very crowded; the air-conditioned area filled first and those of us near the end of the line were forced to sit up front and along the sides and WE WERE SOAKED TO THE SKIN. There was a warning, yes, but no other place to sit. Just be forewarned. If the day workers all congregate in a certain area, they know something!

Got on the ferry with my family without a mask and was promptly verbally assaulted by the crew so I put a mask on for the sake of my family on the boat with me. That wasn't good enough for them. They continued watching me and when I pulled the mask down to drink water a crew member demanded forcefully to wear a mask or they would turn the boat around and kick me off. I told him I was drinking water and he told me to take sips and put the mask on after. All the while I was outside. I looked around the upper deck where I was and saw 2 women standing next to the pilots deck without masks in full of the crew. In addition saw 2 women eating sandwiches without their masks on. They clearly wanted to make an example of me since I had the gall to step on the boat without a mask.
They embarrassed themselves and me with their tactics of intimidation and bullying. Just moved to the area and will NEVER use the ferry again.

The ferry leaves on time no matter if it’s full or not, even if there are only a few more people to board, which is a good thing for employees going to work. There is absolutely no social distancing but they tell everyone (in a rude manner) that you will keep your mask on the entire ride. Meanwhile, they go inside the wheelhouse and take their masks off while standing closer than six feet. We had no problem following their rules to keep our masks on, even though the CDC and NC Governor just changed the guidelines on masks, it was how rude they were when speaking to passengers. We took two different ferrys and it was the same on both. It is costly with parking and ferry ticket and there is not a military discount.
