HIDDEN GEM....but shhhh, don't tell anybody. Great kayaking fun for all experience levels. Incredibly peaceful. Takes about an hour and half to navigate entire course.
Pros: Easy to get find, ample parking, easy water access (dock or ramp), fresh water access
Cons: no restroom facilities, when water is low, the areas around buoys 18 & 36 are very shallow and may be challenging to those less fit

One of the most enjoyable kayaking experiences I've ever had. I had never heard of a kayak trail before. What a great idea. Paddling through a cypress tree swamp on a marked trail with low cover and some tight turns was pretty cool. I was hoping I'd get lucky and see more than turtles and birds. Maybe next time!
I went early on a Sunday in September and I was the only one out there. By the time I finished there were a half dozen cars in the lot with kayak racks. I'm sure in the summer it can be quite popular. Regardless, I highly recommend.

Had a wonderful time paddling the preserve this past Saturday morning with my family (two teenage daughters + two of their friends). Much of the time you're under shaded tree canopies so it was very pleasant and no mosquitos - this was around 12pm in June. We paddled at a leisurely pace and stopped to eat our lunch under some of the cypresses - it's amazing to me this is in Wake County. Saw many turtles and birds. The whole trip took about an hour and a half or so. Additionally, I was concerned about popping our inflatable kayaks on a submerged tree stump - we did get stuck a few times (it had been a week since last rainfall) but all three of our kayaks made it out unscathed and we saw many other inflatables as well.

This is a great place to relax and enjoy a calm Kayaking experience. We rented ours from Paddle Creek, and took the marked water trail. We heard screeching Herons, and saw turtles. The atmosphere was quiet and mostly shady. I am usually a mosquito magnet and so I put on a small spray of Off, but my husband and son did not, and no one was bothered by bugs (in June!) Beautiful location, beautiful day Trip in Wake County on a weekend!

There is a 1+ mile "trail" marked with numbered buoys (#1 - #73). A lot of trees, bushes, some insects (e.g. dragon flies - but we saw no mosquitos) and the sun shines through a lot of places but not everywhere.
It's quiet, one can paddle and then drift a while. Even with small groups the tendency will be to mostly go single file for a while, since some of the tail is narrow, and then perhaps to gather to chat in the larger water areas.
So you're out there in nature. That is all that there is - no refreshment stand, no entertainment - just a parking area and a kayak rental area. There are one person kayaks and two person kayaks available for rental. Hmmm, people often find that paddling with another person is a stressfull experience! They loan PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices, aka life jackets) at no charge when renting a kayak, and provide paddles with the kayaks. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Kayaking at Robertson Millpond with Boating Club friends (Raleigh Sail & Power Squadron). Great place to go on a summer morning. It is shady and cool under the Cyprus trees. 🤗

There’s not much there for young kids. No playground. But they have canoeing. I haven’t canoed there yet myself but it looks like everyone has a great time doing it. It’s a lot larger pond than most everyone thought it was. People fish there too if you’re into that sort of thing.

Visited for the first time. Huge beautiful cypress trees with the kayak trail snaking through them. Took just about an hour. The next trip will be at a slower pace to better enjoy the scenery.not an abundance of people on the water. One could get lost venturing far off the pathway. Very pleasant trip

On a warm day in Raleigh, my friend and I drive the short drive from Raleigh to enjoy a cool, serene kayak around the 73 buoys in the Robertson Millpond Sunken Forest.
It was worth the $42.00 it cost to rent two solo kayaks for about an hour loop paddle trip around the buoys.
At times your paddle may bump a tree branch or log under the water which adds to the thrill of paddling around a sunken forest.
It is shady and cool.
Some people were fishing off their kayaks.
You can bring your own kayak and launch for free.
Fun and relaxing way to spend a couple hours.

Get your paddles out, don't be sad that the Neuse is closed due to flooding, go to Wendell! Only open weekends though, don't know why that is!! First weekend open, we were there 4/30, Sunday morning, and the parking lot was almost full. Us old people got out of the way a couple times for the swifter paddlers, but it was never crowded. We were alone almost all of the time. Always fun, not for big tandem kayaks tho, new parts of the trail are pretty narrow with some sharp turns. We were in 10.5' predators and had to push off the trees a couple of times in the narrow passages. Also, the fishermen told us they caught some brim. One porta john, btw.
