In short a wonderful experience. They patiently answered all our questions and explained the steps they take to preserve the eggs and turtles. This was followed by a truly heart warming experience of releasing baby turtles into the sea. We were each given about 15 turtles to release.
The project conserves all possible species of turtles but majorly the Green and Olive Ridley turtles were present during our visit. We were blessed to see the hatching of eggs and release the young ones into the sea by hand.

Volunteering
I had originally booked two weeks volunteering with the project but I enjoyed my self so much that I stayed for an additional week. And I could really stay forever. Dudley and his family make the experience. Nothing was ever too much trouble and they would all go above and beyond to ensure each volunteer has everything they need.
As an Animal Science in the UK I wanted to see first hand conservation work and feel part of making a difference. I feel like I have achieved this. Not only have I buried eggs and released hundreds of babies whilst volunteering at the sanctuary , I have also spent a lot of time giving tours which has not only improved my knowledge on Sea Turtles but also means I have spoken to lots of people about the importance of conserving these amazing wild animals.
The main message of the project is conservation and sustaining and improving wild populations. By educating the public, carrying out beach cleans, burying eggs so that they can hatch safely. And releasing babies, means the project is making a big difference to wild population numbers.
Accommodation
Staying at the project really felt like a home away from home. The accommodation is clean with air con, Wifi and lovely social area and garden. The food was traditional Sri Lankan meals, which I will be cooking when I get home, which included breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The trip was my first adventure alone and meant I was very anxious at being in a new place. I definitely didn't need to be as anxious as I was! And I really do feel like part of the family and will be returning at any chance I can. The staff were friendly and so helpful and it has ben so enjoyable meeting and working with different people.
Meeting the other volunteers has also been a great experience and i have also made a best friend for life. Along with lots of other friends. And I am so grateful to have shared this life changing experience with them, where i have made unforgettable memories.
I will miss the entire family so much. And i am already looking forward to returning. Dudley and his family are doing wonderful things, not only in the sanctuary and the wild population numbers but also to the volunteers they welcome in. The family really do make the experience. Along with providing the chance to play a big part in the conservation of endangered Sea Turtles.

I volunteered at this project for a month and it was the best experience!
I was travelling alone in Sri Lanka but immediately Dudley and his family made me feel so welcome at the project and I settled in straight away. I felt so cared for, the food was incredible and it is a lovely living environment for volunteers.
The volunteer house was clean, very close to the sanctuary and felt very homely! Beds were comfortable and I slept very well.
As a volunteer we also participated in regular beach cleans which was great as it felt good to actively take care of where the mother turtles were coming and laying their eggs, making a difference in their safety and conservation of their environment.
As a visitor, you get to see how well the turtles are cared for, whether they are older rescues or baby turtles that have hatched and will be released back into the wild. I would definitely recommend booking to release baby turtles which was very popular for tourists and is such an amazing experience as it is done in the evening and the sunsets are incredibly beautiful!
Thank you all so much for making my time here so amazing! I enjoyed every second and will definitely be returning.

Bravo bravo bravo

This sea turtle conservation centre is doing great things to ensure that the injured and resued turtles live out their lives as comfortably as possible. The actual centre looks a bit rundown but it's all run on charity donations from visitors and I honestly believe that the people working there love the turtles immensely.
It's worth a visit to fall in love with the guests that are lucky enough to be rescued and cared for in this place.
Then there's the little newly hatched turtles that are adorable too.
Altogether a lovely experience and definitely worth a visit to experience these majestic beauties. Any donations are helping to keep this project on track and ensuring there is help at hand for any needy guests...

Sea Turtles are one of threatened species of the world. Southern costal line is a common place for laying eggs by sea turtles. Victor Hasselblad sea turtle conservation place is the first most sea turtle conservation place in Sri Lanka started in 1978.
It is a good place to experience hatchlings and sea turtles.

Hello.
I’ve seen that we do not need to prebook. But I can not find a price anywhere online.
How much does it cost to visit at sunset to release the hatchlings?
J. Hefti
Arnhem, Nederland14 bidrag
The price for releasing is a combination price: entree + release. Entree is 1000 and release is 1500 (totalling to 2500 roepies/roepia)

Hi Sheilapickles its not local to kahanda kandy. Its on the coast towards Bentota. There are many turtle sancturys in your area. If you ask reception i am sure they can help. Best regards Gary.

How do you get tickets? do you need to book before or can you turn up?
J. Hefti
Arnhem, Nederland14 bidrag
There are indeed touroperators that have this project included in their price (meaning they will buy the ticket(s) for you upon arrival). However, there is NO actual pre-booking possible, except from making a phonecall to the project to let them know how late you want to come (no pre-paying possible). The entry has a fixed price per person, which includes a tour (possibly by volunteers like me) explaining about everything you’ll see. If you come near sunset and want to release some hatchlings, that’s costing extra, but ensures you an everlasting memory. Phone details can be found on their website. With love, J. I think it was 1000 Sri Lankan Rupees for our family which is very inexpensive for a family activity. We have a 2 and 5 year old and they were very entertained for the 30 minutes you spend there. As for other things, take a river safari. It is 7000 SLR for a family and takes 1.5 hours. Our kids were entertained the whole time.

How do I get to this place? Is it closer from Galle, Hikkaduwa or Mirissa, as I will be staying in all three during my visit.

The hatchery is located on Galle rd, around 30km North of Hikkaduwa (the closet city out of the three you mentioned). It is a fair journey from Hikkaduwa, and I think it may be better to find a local hatchery in Hikkaduwa (as I saw several of them passing through the city). If I may add, you might have the opportunity to swim alongside large, adult turtles when you stay in Hikkaduwa. I would recommend asking local people to direct you to the right beach to swim with them if interested, as most of them know about the turtles. Having done it myself, I would say it is a great experience.

I think that maybe you could contact the conservation project itself to find your answers for this. Good luck
