Interesting visit, but ! We arrived at 11 a.m. and wanted to charge us an entrance fee of 20 dollars per person, who after asking and we were going to see with that entrance fee, inform us that seeing their facilities and their conservation project and at 18:30 hours participate in the reintroduction of turtles at sea, on our part being a passing visit about the afternoon activity we lost it, and had to negotiate another ticket price

This has always been on my bucket list and it lived up to everything I imagined.
Dudley and his team were so helpful, so friendly and we learnt a lot about the conservation work they are doing.
Would recommend this highly to any age group and what a lovely way to spending an early evening; beautiful beach, stunning sunset, cute as a button turtles and being a part of making a difference to the conservation of turtles 🥰

My boyfriend and I got to volunteer here for a day and this was so great! We have seen how much these people care about the turtles and how they contribute to increasing the population in the wild. If you have the chance to walk with this for a day as a volunteer you should always do it! It is a wonderful experience that you will never forget and you also contribute to a good project. If you can't volunteer, you should definitely visit the project! It is educational, fun and beautiful to see how they help the turtles.

I highly recommend this centre for anyone who wants to learn about turtles and cares about conservation.
First of all, there are many turtle conservation sites along this road and there is one with a similar name not far from this one. I think it would be easy to confuse the two.
My husband and I visited this centre during the day and were given a very informative tour in English by one of the staff. She explained their processes, how often the tanks are cleaned and gave us a lot of information about the turtles.
I liked that we were only allowed to pat one specific turtle.
We went back the next day in the evening to release some newly hatched turtles. That was a fantastic experience. I had called several other centres and had been told to just come at any time to release, even though there is a high chance that eagles and other large birds would prey on them if released during daylight.
But at this place they actually waited until it was dusk and the eagles had stopped circling. We really appreciated the value the staff placed on the lives of each of these baby turtles.
You can also volunteer at this centre for up to 3 months. We met one of the volunteers who was also really informative.

Though the farm itself is good, informative and worth visiting but the persons running the place or their employees are scamsters who charge foreign visitors US$10 as entrance fee per person! They don't provide any tickets and neither anywhere it's mentioned that there is any entry fee. BE AWARE!!

Small but interesting turtle farm! Entrance is 2 thousand rupees per adult and 1 thousand rupees per child. We were given an interesting excursion, they showed us all the turtles. This sanctuary houses all healthy turtles. Newborns are released into the ocean on the first day after birth. We really liked this farm!

Brilliant experience for our children. The guide spoke great English and was very engaging to the children. The turtles were amazing, we were lucky to see 3 hatch and my daughter was allowed to help carry them to the tank.
Easy to find, easy to park, affordable, 30mins is enough so great for smaller kids

Do you release the baby turtles everyday of the year or only at certain times
Skrevet 3. januar 2024
Hello.
I’ve seen that we do not need to prebook. But I can not find a price anywhere online.
How much does it cost to visit at sunset to release the hatchlings?
Skrevet 29. mars 2019
I'm not sure they release the little hatchlings every day - they have to wait until they are the right size to release.
We visited in the morning and then went back in the later afternoon.
Best to email them ahead

Hi Sheilapickles its not local to kahanda kandy. Its on the coast towards Bentota. There are many turtle sancturys in your area. If you ask reception i am sure they can help. Best regards Gary.

How do you get tickets? do you need to book before or can you turn up?
Skrevet 16. januar 2017
There are indeed touroperators that have this project included in their price (meaning they will buy the ticket(s) for you upon arrival). However, there is NO actual pre-booking possible, except from making a phonecall to the project to let them know how late you want to come (no pre-paying possible). The entry has a fixed price per person, which includes a tour (possibly by volunteers like me) explaining about everything you’ll see. If you come near sunset and want to release some hatchlings, that’s costing extra, but ensures you an everlasting memory. Phone details can be found on their website. With love, J. Hefti (from the netherlands)

I think it was 1000 Sri Lankan Rupees for our family which is very inexpensive for a family activity. We have a 2 and 5 year old and they were very entertained for the 30 minutes you spend there. As for other things, take a river safari. It is 7000 SLR for a family and takes 1.5 hours. Our kids were entertained the whole time.

How do I get to this place? Is it closer from Galle, Hikkaduwa or Mirissa, as I will be staying in all three during my visit.
Skrevet 19. februar 2016
The hatchery is located on Galle rd, around 30km North of Hikkaduwa (the closet city out of the three you mentioned). It is a fair journey from Hikkaduwa, and I think it may be better to find a local hatchery in Hikkaduwa (as I saw several of them passing through the city). If I may add, you might have the opportunity to swim alongside large, adult turtles when you stay in Hikkaduwa. I would recommend asking local people to direct you to the right beach to swim with them if interested, as most of them know about the turtles. Having done it myself, I would say it is a great experience.

Do you have to organize in advance to volunteer here and what is the minimal amount of time that you can volunteer?
Skrevet 31. januar 2016
I think that maybe you could contact the conservation project itself to find your answers for this. Good luck
