I love to walk down to Veterans Point Gardens in particular in late summer/early fall when the butterflies are gathering on the lovely planted native species in the rain gardens.
The park is well laid out and pays tribute to the men and woman who built Ajax with the DIL memorial and the lovely memorial to the famous naval battle that contributed to the naming of the town and many of the streets.
The gardens provide wonderful scenic views along the waterfront and is a great place to walk or cycle.

The whole Ajax waterfront is very nice. However it stinks for much of the summer due to the sewage plant.
Even worse and largely unknown, Ajax draws its drinking water from Lake Ontario and sometimes the "mixing zone" covers the water intake pipe!!!
One of Canada's largest sewage plants is located just west of Duffin's Creek and is owned and operated by the Regions of York & Durham. It is currently dumping 340 million litres per day of partially treated sewage with phosphorous levels that exceed the limits agreed to in the Canada US Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality.
The results of a 4 year scientific study concludes that the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant is responsible for 98% of the algae in the area.
There is technology that can remove 99% of the phosphorus from the 98% source and solve the problem! Money to pay for the technology has been built into land development fees and largely collected. It was collected to build a bigger sewage pipe, but its better to clean the sewage than just build a bigger, longer pipe.
This algae blankets the bottom of the Lake in the near shore waters in front of Ajax, breaks off and washes up on the beaches. It rots and stinks up the waterfront for a great part of the summer.
York and Durham Regions are responsible for the plant. The Province can make the Regions install the technology to properly clean the sewage.
For now, the park is nice but stinky in the summer. I live in Ajax and won't drink the water. I get my drinking water from the spring up Lakeridge by the ski area.

I love visiting Veterans Point.
Ajax, Ontario is a very unique town with an interesting history which is on display throughout the waterfront. I take my grandchildren there as well as visitors there not only for the beauty of the gardens and lake but for a history lesson. I believe Ajax is still the only town in the world named after a ship. Oh, the Monarch butterflies LOVE that area too !

I'll admit it - I was there with my children as they hunted Pokemon. They said it was a great location for finding them and judging by the number of people there, I think they were correct. Actually, I was shocked at how many people were there.
As my children hunted pokemon, I walked around and looked at all the memorials. Very interesting. Its a beautiful park with great views of Lake Ontario. Great walkway along the lake. Lots of room for a picnic. Washrooms available as well.
Very well maintained by the Town. Beautiful.

This is very interesting and if you ever saw or liked the show Bomb Girls you will find this park and the plaques that are there very interesting. It is free to wander about and I think that we were able to park for free to. It is kind of an unexpected surprise you think you are just going for a nice walk and then all of a sudden it is a history lesson. I am glad we happened upon this park.

Veterans' Point Garden, commemorates the Town of Ajax's history. It is dedicated to the HMS Ajax, the Defence Industries Plant, and the employees who made this area their home during WWII.
In the Summer there are beautiful flowers and seating to take in the stunning waterfront. This location is also good to take the family for summer picnics

This park is in a lovely setting overlooking Lake Ontario. Beautiful gardens and comfortable benches allow visitors to explore the park and read the story of the naval battle in South America. All very nicely laid out except for the very limited parking and difficulty for old veterans to get to the memorial with their walkers.
