Immaculate church just off the main road not far from Quebec City, worth a stop if heading towards Canyon Saint Anne or beyond. Beautiful architecture, frescoes, and stained glass. Place is massive which also adds to awe inspiring nature of this site

The basilica is really beautiful, probably the most beautiful church I've seen in Quebec. There are beautiful stained glass windows representing various "ordinary" North American characters, such as Italian immigrants and the San Lorenzo pilots, giving a feeling of "the people's" church. The frescoes are beautiful, the different chapels dedicated to different saints. Overall, a recommended stop!

The basilica was a short drive in our car rental from Quebec and well worth visiting this stunning basilica.

We parked on the side street and were a little concerned seeing scaffoling on the front stairs and only construction workers working on the main entrance. However, it was open with groups of school kids already inside.

The embossed metal doors were quite heavy to push open but moved smoothly. The entry foyer was more detailed than I expected and included two small altars. This preview was just a precursor to what lay inside the main basilica.

The inside of the basilica left us speechless. We could feel the immensity of the basilica and importance. Almost every inch was decorated and it looked like no effort was spared. I don’t recall seeing so much use of mosaics not only on the floor but even in the ceilings and around every window.

Every group of students eventually gathered around the status of St. Anne. It was quite magnificent.

The Imaculate Conception Chapel downstairs was simpler and the mosaics were a bit more modern in design.

We were also able to walk around behind the main altar and look at all the individual chapels. When we finished the staff closed the path so we felt fortunate to have seen them that day.

Outside were the monastery, blessings office, bathrooms and gift shop. In addition on the other side of the road we walked though the larger than life statues forming the Way of the Cross which wound its way up the side of the hill.

We were pleasantly surprised by our visit here. First of all, the church is so huge that you could see if from almost two miles away when approaching from the south. The architecture is outstanding and the inside is amazingly beautiful. It is not far from Quebec so combining a visit to the basilica together with a stop at Montmorency Falls makes for a nice half-venture adventure.

Impressive construction.
It houses interesting mosaics and inside a replica of Michelangelo's "La Pietá".
If the environment is snowy you have a plus.
As for the relics, anyway...

Our last visit to this place was about ten years ago. The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Sanctuary is the oldest place of pilgrimage in North America. It has existed for over 350 years. Since 1658, several miraculous healings have been reported. The great feast of Saint Anne, for its part, takes place on July 26 each year and is preceded by nine days of celebrations called the novena.

The Sanctuary includes the Basilica and Chapel of the Immaculate Conception located in the basement, the Memorial Chapel, the Scala Santa and a magnificent Stations of the Cross on the mountainside.

The neo-Romanesque basilica is built in the shape of a cross. The three double doors located at the front are embossed copper doors by the craftsman Albert Gilles. These represent work spanning almost a year. The large golden statue which adorns the top of the facade is that of Sainte-Anne which was saved from the first basilica during the fire of 1922. As for the magnificent fountain located in front of the Basilica, this is the work of Canadian sculptor Émile Brunet. This is 10 meters high and the bronze basin has a diameter of 4 meters.

The Memorial Chapel

The chapel recalls the third church which welcomed pilgrims from 1676 to 1876. This is the reason why it was nicknamed the souvenir church. It was built in 1878 on the foundations of the third church of Sainte-Anne (1676-1876) with the difference that the facade now faces south and not west like the old church. Ornaments and the bell tower from 1788 were recovered from the old church. Some furniture is now in the Basilica museum and others were integrated during the construction of the chapel. The church was opened for worship on October 2, 1878 and the interior finishing was completed in 1881. A weather vane rooster, symbol of the triple denial of the Apostle Peter pivots on the bell tower with two lanterns. Parishioners were buried in the adjacent cemetery until 1930.

The Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross of 14 stations evoke the Passion of Christ. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful Stations of the Cross that I have ever seen. This one is located in the hill and is surrounded by maple trees. Its production extended from 1913 to 1945. Each scene brings together several characters in bronzed cast iron cast in the workshops of Vancouleurs, in France.

-The memorial chapel and Scala Santa are closed in winter. The Basilica, for its part, is open during the day, 7/7.

-The Sanctuary of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is a must-visit if you are in the region, whether you are a believer or not.

-In the Basilica parking lot there is a pedestrian tunnel which allows you to access the Domaine Sainte-Anne and the Quai Sainte-Anne where you can admire the Saint-Laurent River and the Ile d'Orléans.

How strange!
The Basilica attracted us for its grandeur but from the moment we arrived it seemed to us that we were in front of a modern building. And in fact we are not used to seeing churches with an elevator or mosaic windows in which various professions are represented, including the worker with the jackhammer.
Having said that, all this is not a reason for disappointment, they are just characteristic aspects of this place of worship which deserves to be visited also to get an idea of how faith can be manifested in places so different from those to which we are accustomed.

Absolutely amazing! Beautiful architecture and grounds. There is a Father on site to bless religious purchases. I was fortunate to be there for mass. It brought back childhood memories of my Catholic upbringing. And just maybe, St Anne will answer a prayer or two.

Astonishing basilica, all in magnificent condition.
Amazing that such a huge building for worship is in such a small town. Particularly impressed by the stained glass windows throughout.
Works going on outside but still open to visitors.
SILENCE signs everywhere, broken only by official guides in their red jackets shouting into their walkie-talkies. Shh!
