The Maya riviera is quite beautiful and exotic in some places, but also rough and unkempt in between. You will find one luxury resort next to another. We visited the natural park of Aktun Chen, with very nice caves both with and without water. The snorkeling trip at the maroma beach was disappointing; not a nice coral. Our week-and-a-half enjoyment wasn't too bad, but you have to take the long journey (with us 14 hours there and 12 hours back, due to all kinds of delays).

Beautiful view, personal smiling friendly, Miguel Caaren and Viviane at the paddle board very nice and professional, in padle we saw turtles ray and fish, we had a nice band night every night

Incredibly beautiful bay ruined by tourism, poverty and politics in Mexico. No official lot to park in, on entry there's 2 "poorly unpaved" lots here, neither one is official, and of course there's Mexicans on ready trying to catch you at your car to get you to park in theirs, second one is a little bit more reasonable, actual lined parking spaces, entrance is right before the seven eleven, it's 100 mxn to park. At this point avoid anyone and everyone coming up to get you to buy their package, it's all a scam to get you to pay a couple bucks more for poorly maintained snorkel gear and ripped life jackets, they additionally will try and pull the no change scam if you don't have exact change for them or charge you a fee to use your credit card, at which point that's also at risk for theft. The entry to the national park, which the bay is, is the only fee you need to pay to enter the park it's 130 mxn, if you've paid anything else you've been ripped off. Lockers are free but do require a 100 mxn deposit which is returned when you return the key. The free swimming area of the beach is unfortunately quite small and separated off by ropes, lots of ropes. There's a lot of sea grass here, so try not to step on it so as to protect the nutrition for the fauna, what's left of it anyway. Sea turtles will be in beyond the ropes where you're allowed to swim in the more rich sea grass beds, getting to this area requires a guide, which you have to pay for, again make sure to not get scammed by the host of people trying to overcharge you before you enter the park, the guides on the beach generally charge 400 mxn (9/5/24) but everything is negotiable here if you want. Boats are available too if you want to go to the reef which is further out, but there's really not enough time to both search for sea turtles in the grass beds and snorkel the reef since it's $40/hr US to get a boat to take you out, a crappy little motor boat, a couple hundred meters, if you've agreed to pay more, you've been ripped off! Of note is that sunscreen is not allowed here, but considering you don't want skin cancer either at the cost of seeing a few sea turtles, just make sure to put on some mineral based, biodegradable sunscreen before coming here. The turtle are fun, you'll get to see a few, we saw babies the huge turtles as well, water is a little murky though, do to so many people here to see the same thing at the same time. Not likely to see much else here, and faster sea life will stay clear of morons! What's missing here I think is organization, limits and good regulation, ruins an otherwise serene experience and limits how much enjoyment you can get out of this. Like literally, just a few canoes or paddleboats/sea kayaks and a reserved window with limited amount of available spots would be sufficient here, post all the info on a website and good to go, but alas, idiots will be idiots, enjoy!

Quiet, relaxing and fun stay in Akumal Bay. Without a doubt the best place to vacation. Thanks to all the attentive staff and especially to Carolina Rodas who welcomed us and toured us.

It is a beautiful place where you can take a tour to see sea turtles, be amazed, you just have to get there early because it closes early.

Really good snorkelling and clear water. We saw lots of turtles (we went in early march). They were very nice and healthy. There were also lots of other sealife; we saw sting rays, massive silver fish, pufferfish. You have to pay for a guide (£26 each). There were also deposit lockers , and changing rooms and shower. Very good recommend. 👍

Our hotel was in the middle of this bay and we used to really enjoy our time there. It isn't the biggest and you can probably walk it from one side to the other in an easy half an hour but there's lots to see and do.
The seaweed is a problem at times, but not as bad as other beaches in the area. the Sun is whiten soft and the sea very calm indeed.
We used to snorkel straight from the beach which was fantastic and we saw many shores of fishes.
Best of all with you so numerous stingrays and turtles. All very safe and all very beautiful.

Super endroit bien arboré , belle anse aux belles couleurs, le seul souci c'est l'affluence des gens qui viennent voir les tortues, un commerce horrible où peu de personnes ne respectent les tortues. De nombreux tours operators vendent des balades dans les algues et c'est la foire les gens hurlent quand ils voient une tortue, ne respectent aucune consigne, l'irrespect total de la nature.
Par contre de nuit, cette baie est calme et magnifique, un petit sentier permet une longue balade

If you have snorkeled with sea turtles before I would just skip it. If you think this might be the only time you ever get to see sea turtles then maybe it's worth it. The tour is not great, and unfortunately you can only snorkel with a tour. Basically the way it works is they take you a very short way out into the bay by boat and then you get out and, without fins, have to follow your guide pretty closely. And instead of just snorkeling and going to see the coral and fish and stuff you are basically on the hunt for sea turtles. When one is spotted everyone crowds around the poor thing until it swims off and then you're on the hunt again. You are forced to stay close to the guide and theres a TON of people doing the exact same thing so it's pretty crowded. It's just not as enjoyable as a regular snorkeling trip somewhere else on the reef.

We really want to try and see an eagle ray, we heard the best place was outside the beach and wellness resort and Dive centre,
by the 2nd reef near the drop off. Can you swim out near the drop off from the shore without a life jacket?
If you need a life jacket where do you get them from?
I also heard boats can take you out, can you turn up on the day and pay for a boat to take you out or do you need to do it though a tour operator in advance? Do you know how much they roughly cost?
(We're not staying at the wellness resort)

We are coming end of May I am travelling with my 2 children age 6,2. My question is I am thinking of buying all snorkelling gear before coming, are you allowed to wear snorkel mask? Do I need to buy the fins? My kids are not swimmers so hoping to be in the shallow end of the reef, will we see loads of fishes or do I need to go deeper?

You should be fine early morning to see fish. I brought snorkel stuff for kids I found on sale at target. Speedo was the brand another mom recommended. The make that also covers the nose. My 4 year tried it. Meh. The 7 and 9 year old loved. Go out early. More
Fish, less crowds. Also the outdoor cafe was super kid friendly but the gift shop a bit expensive. Have a great time!!!

We would like to take a taxi there too, but how did you get back to your hotel? Did you flag down another taxi from the road?

About 100m inland from the beach, as you pass through the archway into the sort of 'town' area if you like (where the taxi you get there will drop you off) there are taxis galore, just tell one where you're going and they will oblige. I will mention however that some are more safety equipped than others, one we saw didn't even have seat belts.

We are planning to spend a beach/ snorkeling day in Akumal. Where can we rent a cabana or grab some drinks in a quiet beach setting? We are not beach club people.

Haven't seen any cabanas and it's often windy for umbrellas. Find a palm to sit under that doesn't have coconuts on it.
