Church & The Pool
jan. 2020
We visited and walk along the Pool which offers some splendid British countryside scenery, this is located behind the Parish Church which also is worth a viewing.

A surprising interior
aug. 2019
Next door to Melbourne hall so easy to combine a visit. It is beautiful and well worth the time. Pick up a leaflet if you can find one as it tells you the key points and there are some interesting carvings to find. I was interested to note that Sir George Gilbert Scott had a hand in the restoration.

A magnificent parish church in a small market town.

The Melbourne cat!
jan. 2019 • Par
After a delicious meal at the Tea Rooms, a walk round the Mill Pond and a walk round this delightful little town with all its history, we spent an hour in the church. Although it is very old it seems to still play a vital role in the community. Lots of fine examples of Norman architecture, but I will remember it chiefly for the carving of the Melbourne cat at the top of one of the pillars. What a fine animal! As a former bellringer, I would have loved to see the unusual arrangement of the bells. It is a magnificent building, but also a place of peace and tranquility and very well cared for. Our visit to the church was a fine end to a fascinating day.

A welcoming place to take communion
okt. 2018 • Forretning
Yes, this is a stunning, historic church. It is also a working church serving its community, and I found huge comfort and welcome there when I visited for Thursday morning communion.

Amazing Norman cathedral/church set in interesting historic village
sep. 2018 • Alene
This church is not that easy to park at because of its central hemmed in location.... but there are so many other interesting historic buildings of similar interest that parking slightly afar is rewarded with views of them too. We parked the large motorhome at the Industrial estate in Sweet Leys Way which is not really industrial at all and it has Betties Barms or something similar as a handy roadside kiosk takeaway for refreshments as a bonus between 7 and 2 or so weekdays.
The church is a complete surprise - its a very fine example of Norman Romanesque architecture on a grand scale for a parish church. Most of all the key Norman features are all still in place with rounded double arches and vaulted ceilings in the aisles and entrance doorway. Some insensitive Victorian renovations was carried out but it is still all very impressive. it reminded us of Ely and Winchester Cathedrals with its enormous round columns along the aisles. It illustrates an unusual feature inside where the upper arches are different on each side for unknown reasons.
its also got a surprise for the Campanologists as it has an enormous array of bells, maybe twelve, in one of its three towers which are shown on a CCTV image and it's interesting to see they hang and ring vertically rather than horizontally.
It has an interesting origin as it was reputed to be built by the Bishop of Carlisle as a substitute cathedral during their residence in Melbourne during the Scottish border unsettled periods of the 12th and 14th century.
Available in the church are many leaflets covering interesting places in the town to visit.
There's the other local attraction of Pool Pond just next door which was built to power the local mil and provides a walk around if so desired to admire a view over the water of the church and village. But none of the mill itself. Nearby there's also the Melbourne Hall gardens and craft and tea room areas plus several pubs of free house nature and service.
there's a medium size Sainsburies on the way out of Melbourne for more serious grocery shopping with ample car parking.
Last off there is another interesting church and hall nearby to Calke Abbey (Staunton Harold) which is worth visiting and is a NT propoerty but not open very often but it has interesting teatures too set in a churchyard with adjacent hall which is easily to park and walk from.

At peace with the world
jun. 2018 • Alene
Take a walk around and look inside the church and be at peace with the world. I would have liked to have seen the Bell ropes being used but perhaps next time. The garden at the rear of the church was also open but I did not have time to visit.

A solid old church in the heart of this smart small town
okt. 2017 • Alene
This sold dark-stoned old church is accessed by either of two large arched doorways and via large solid wood doors. It does have a slight musky smell to it though!
Inside there are five large arches either side of the aisle supported on huge circular stone pillars and above these a passageway and a line of windows. There are plenty of interesting plaques affixed to the walls and two impressive war memorials. The central bell tower has ropes hanging down from it and these are visible in front of the altar. There are thirteen rows of wooden pews on each side of the aisle too.
There are plenty of brochures that are either free or available for payment. All considered an impressive building.

Historic church

A beautiful old church with all the history of a thousand years there to absorb. This is a perfect add on if you are visiting Melbourne Hall as it's just across the square.
