Biggest problem for us was my research beforehand online and even speaking to Townsville locals that it was dog friendly but it’s definitely not. You can’t use the hop on bus, you can’t access the most popular walks or destinations with a small lap dog on a leash or carried. Car hire on island also doesn’t except dogs so better to leave pooch at home as only the ferry is dog friendly.

Myself and my boyfriend came here for a day. The island itself is beautiful, but in order to do anything you have to spend a ridiculous amount of money. The ferry from Townsville cost $90 . The transport is terrible. Especially considering you cannot get around the island by foot is more like a small town . The bus only come every other hour . Myself, my boyfriend tried to get a taxi to somewhere that was nine minutes away and they charged us $20 !! , You Can rent a tiny car for Ridiculous money and then Force added extras onto like insurance!!
This island is only good if you have a car to take of your own !

We are hikers and occasional swimmers so we went on more of a walking trip. Plenty to do here from waterskiing, diving, snorkeling, cruises to dining and enjoying the view, to checking out the walking tracks.
A bus takes you around town if you didn’t take a car but be wary at the ferry stop it takes a good 20min for all the tourists to get on and pay. About 4-8 dollars for a whole day trip depending on the day of week. Cars scooters and motorbikes for hire.

Impossible to miss this place while traveling in Queensland,
so worth it, even for 1 day.

Stayed at Maggie Island in Picnic Bay for 3 nights in late August. Unfortunately the weather was only great on the final day.
Accommodation options through Best of Magnetic are decent, although the island probably needs somewhere a bit more upmarket than the Peppers. Would also recommend hiring a car as the island is hilly and the novelty of the bus wears out.
Pros:
- Natural environment is stunning, beaches and granite strewn rainforests provide an incredible backdrop
- Very easy to get to via plane to Townsville and 25 min ferry to the island
- Busses generally stick to timetable
- Friendly locals
- Decent range of private accommodation options
- IGA in Nelly Bay is handy (though unsurprisingly expensive)
Cons:
- Busses typically come less than once an hour, and don't align neatly with the ferry timetable. Also tickets are cash only which is a pain coming from a capital city.
- Taxi service was dreadful.
- Restaurants and cafes are sub-par, close too early (most at 8pm) and aren't open frequently enough. You can find far better food options in Townsville.
- No E-bikes which would be handy to get between each village
- Picnic Bay could use a small corner shop/grocer
Overall was a relaxing trip, will be very interested to see how the island progresses over the coming years as it could be something truly spectacular.

What an I missing? A pretty location and I very much enjoyed the Fort Walk, however the island is very tired looking and reminds me of Surfers Paradise or Airlie Beach in the 80s. Not one toilet block had soap - in these Covid times, this is simply unheard of. The food was very overpriced and to be honest, pretty terrible, including my morning coffee.

Horseshoe Bay (located at the North East of the Island) was my choice of location to stay on Maggie and it’s got lots to offer:
-Horseshoe Bay Markets - these Sunday Markets are great and there’s food, knick knacks and live music
- A great swimming beach (flat surf, protected) with stinger nets which was great to cool off in (you can rent kayaks too)
- Close to lots of cafes and restaurants - I enjoyed a burger at Marlin Bay Tavern, and they also have a takeaway bottle shop.
- Famous Forts Walk is 5-10 minutes away by car scooter
- Just nearby is the Butterfly Walk which has lots of, you guessed it, butterflies!
- Maggie Island is small so it’s basically close to everything!
This is a gorgeous spot to spend a few days

Amazing bays to visit fabulous walks which range from easy to energetic if you are reasonably fit and enjoy walking you will be able to handle it well. At times in some areas you will be clamoring over boulders and rocks, you will absolutely enjoy the diverse scenery. Remember to take plenty of water

Reflecting on recent trip to Magnetic Island. Pretty place, a very real island. Not the place to go if you want to sip cocktails by the beach and enjoy the nightlife. Lots of restaurants closed. Wouldn’t return.
