I have always liked this crater as it a lovely green view. There are cows wondering around and the lookout is slightly higher to further improve the view. Worth seeing.

There is not much here but a rudimentary viewing platform on the side of the road overlooking the swamp below. We timed our visit to arrive 15-20 minutes before sunset and were rewarded with 10-15 brolgas (saurus cranes) coming in to land. They are quite spectacular on their approach making this a very worthwhile activity to have undertaken.

You can easily pull-over and enjoy this. Nice view of the crater and surrounds. Some geological history provided.

Quite interesting to look down on the swamp and see what a crater looked like. Very peaceful and to see the cattle just grazing around the area. A good write up on the sign explaining the crater and the peat. Well worth stopping and viewing.

A magnificent place to watch the Sarus cranes and Brolgas land at dusk. Arrive jsut before disk to see these majestic birds land for the night. You may even get to see them dance around at the edge of the swamp. Just don't forget your binoculars,

I brought my husband here to see the Saurus Cranes and Brolga come in at dusk. There wasn't a lot of activity (maybe 20 cranes total, a few pairs flew in), but we saw a bit of dancing and it was fun.
While there were a lot of birds there (other than just cranes), I needed a spotting scope (bird telescope) to see many of them. The cranes were easily visible by naked eye when they were flying in, and they were gray lumps in the field without binoculars. Binoculars definitely enhanced our experience.

Bromfield Swamp would be a "must do" for dedicated bird watchers who ALSO have quite good optics and/or camera gear.
There is a nice little elevated platform on the road but that is about 500m from just the edge of the swamp area that appears to be on private land. In fact - with unaided vision it is possible to determine that there MIGHT be a big bird over there - but what is it?
The other factor to consider is the time of year and will the birds actually be there.
Consider the season. If it is a "dry" season the swamp is reduced so the birds could be almost anywhere.
Bottom line - well equipped bird watcher - a place to visit. Anyone else - don't bother.

Yes it may be "just a swamp" but for anyone interested in birds, its quite a sight watching the masses of brolgas and saras cranes returning home for the night. Best to get here early evening, bring a couple of chairs, perhaps a picnic or bottle of wine and just settle back and wait - perhaps a little patience is needed but normally you will be rewarded.

Frankly, unless you're into birds - not that much too see there. It's a just a low open wet place down below.

Best to get here about 6.30 in August, time depends on season but we watched many tourists leaving early and missing the arrival of the birds en masse. Only a handful of people each night but those in the know bring a chair and a bottle of wine and nibbles to enjoy a wonderful sight - hundreds of brolgas, saras cranes and a number of magpie geese that have escaped the tables of Noma and other fashionable restaurants.
A wonderful sight watching them fly in and do their displays.

Where is it?

It is about 1.5 hours from Cairns, on the Atherton Tablelands, between Malanda and Atherton.
