It is an excellent, well-organized tour. The young man (I don't remember his name) was informed, well-versed, and genuinely interested in the dinosaur bones and history. Not knowing what to expect and not being a 'dinosaur person, I really enjoyed my time there particularly the lab.

This is a world class facility and a great window into the history of dinosaurs in Australia.
The life size models in brass are exceptional and this is a must see for every intelligent Australian.

In October 2022 my wife and I embarked on a 6 day “Legendary Longreach and Winton Tour” with Outback Aussie Tours, incorporating three nights in Longreach and two nights in Winton, travelling to and from Longreach on the Spirit of the Outback train.

Our arrival in Winton from Longreach was early enough for us to take in some local icons such as the Waltzing Matilda Centre; the North Gregory and Tattersall’s Hotels and Arno’s Wall, before visiting the impressive Australian Age of Dinosaurs, 22 kilometres south east of the town in the afternoon.

At the Age of Dinosaurs we were given a guided interpretive tour of the Fossil Preparation Laboratory, Collection room and Dinosaur Canyon. Worth seeing was the March of the Titanosaurs Exhibition, housing Australia’s best-preserved sauropod tracks with two life-sized bronze sauropods at the Exhibition entrance.

A most informative poster at the Fossil Preparation Laboratory, set the scene for our dinosaur adventure. It offers visitors an initial keen appreciation of what life was like when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It’s worth quoting in this review and it reads “Winton, Queensland, 95 million years ago: the inland sea has retreated to the north and the Winton district is now a fringe of coastal wetlands and open forest. Huge conifers dominate the landscape amid a wealth of lush vegetation: cycads, ginkgos and ferns abound. Horsetails flourish in a myriad of lakes and swamps: dragonflies flit through the marshes and winged reptiles soar above in search of prey. Heavy rain is common, the climate humid and cool. Rivers meander northward; north to the inland sea and lungfish, turtles and crocodiles indulge in their depths. This is The Age of Dinosaurs! “ Indeed a wonderful introduction to our dinosaur journey of discovery that followed.

At the Fossil Preparation Laboratory we were given a guided behind-the -scenes look at how dinosaurs are found and recovered and we watched fossil technicians prepare fossil bones for research and display. Before entering the room to see the fossil technicians in action, performing their intricate and meticulous work, a guide gave us a talk about all aspects of fossil discovery through a series of colourful posters depicting a number of topics including the Discovery and Collection; the Dinosaur Dig; Excavating Dinosaur Bones; and Preservation of the Bones. In addition to the posters there were interesting actual dinosaur bone and fossil specimens on display. One such display highlighted a Scapula (shoulder); Humerus ( upper arm); Femur (upper leg); Dorsal (back) vertebrae and a Rib. Another neat display highlighted fern imprints in rocks. Our full coach group of 45 people made this display room somewhat crowded and also it was at times very hard to hear and understand what the guide was trying to convey and it was a long time standing. However, it was nevertheless still informative for me, despite my hearing challenges.

Our next port of call was the Dinosaur Canyon to witness the March of the Titanosaurs Exhibition housing Australia’s best-preserved sauropod tracks. Here we observed a very impressive, recently discovered 54-metre-long sauropod tracksite. I again had difficulty hearing the guide speaking here but I still enjoyed seeing the Titanosaurs footprints that had been unearthed. Perhaps a better microphone could be considered to assist those of harder hearing.

The two life-sized bronze sauropods at the Exhibition entrance are an obvious attraction, demonstrating the frightening size of the dinosaurs compared to humans – their presence on this Earth all those millions of years ago would have been terrifying to humans had we lived with them at that time. A popular pastime is to have a photo taken beside these magnificent exhibits and in our case we had a group photo taken of our tour group.

Our dinosaur tour ended with a visit to the Collection Room which incorporates a seated theatrette. Here on display are the only known specimens of Australia's largest, and most complete carnivorous dinosaur - Australovenator wintonensis, and Australia's most complete sauropod Diamantinasaurus matildae. We also saw parts of an interesting documentary “ Monsters of the Outback” giving us further knowledge of our dinosaurs of yesteryear.

The Age of Dinosaurs Centre is perched on a spectacular mesa (a wide, flat, elevated landform with steep sides) and as part of our tour package we were treated in the evening to a fabulous sunset barbeque dinner organised for us by the Age of Dinosaurs catering staff. It was at this dinner that the sheer beauty of this spectacular mesa landform became apparent and the sunset was pretty good also.

Every member of the tour group was given a copy of the latest issue of the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Journal with its many interesting dinosaur topics to add to our thirst for knowledge about these fascinating monster creatures that once roamed and dominated the Earth all those millions of years ago.

It was a memorable visit to this wonderful Winton attraction over an afternoon and into the evening. We learnt so much more about dinosaurs in such a short time. Congratulations to the Centre's dedicated staff for making our visit so special.

The Ultimate Dinosaur Tour included the Collection Room, Fossil Preparation Laboratory, the March of the Titanosaurs exhibition and a self-guided walk of Dinosaur Canyon and took 3-4 hours. The shuttle bus from reception to the March of the Titanosaurs exhibition is fun, the exhibition was good, but it is not in-situ which detracts from it slightly - but you definitely appreciate the work it took to get it there and seeing the footprints was very cool. The Dinosaur Canyon walk is a bit of fun looking for the dinosaurs, but the views are simply breath taking and the walk is very well done. Shuttle bus back to reception and then I would suggest talking the short walk to the Fossil Preparation room as it gives you some more stunning views. This area was very interesting but a little crowded with a full tour. The short film and the collection room was also very good. Beautiful view from reception where there is a cafe and heaps of picnic tables under shade on top of the Jump Up.

Great day with the dinosaurs.
We did the 3 options available.
The bone cleaning shed was “real”. The main building furthered the information.
And the buggy ride to the “run” finished it off. Then we could walk down into the canyon. That topped off an amazing experience.

A world class attraction in a very remote area. Extraordinary accomplishment well beyond expectations and worthy of a visit in its own right. Fascinating collection of fossils and stunning views - A complement to all involved in setting up and operating this facility.

We were keen to explore here to send info and what the experience was like to our grandson - he is a keen dinosaur buff! But! $150 for two adults was more than we could afford. Even with a concession discount of $5 it was too pricey for us.

It's mind blowing to think that the evidence of the dinosaurs dates back 95 million years. The Canyon tour is good, the tour guide points out the dinosaur footprints and provides explanations of the findings. The dinosaur displays are good and the short walk into the canyon is very easy. The tour provides water and sunscreen if you happen to forget it. Worth visiting if you are at Winton
