It’s one of those creations of a genius that had shown persistence against the norm. The service, the food and quality of ambiance is exceptional. Tip, you have to have a meal here and spend at least 2 hours to truly enjoy the place.

This review is specific to the Cube only - as a whole, I love D'arenberg winery which has beautiful grounds and stunning views over the valley; and I really, really love D'arrys Verandah, which we've been to many times - a fabulous restaurant - you know exactly what you're going to get: delicious food (consistent as well), excellent service and a relaxed, warm atmosphere with a beautiful outlook, perfect on a warm spring/autumn day.

The Cube is everything D'arrys Verandah (and the scenic, serene rest of the winery) is not.

A complete and utter monstrosity with zero atmosphere, unless you fancy sitting in a try hard box of a building that is strongly reminiscent of the science lab at high school - capped off by a pretentious display of totally unattainable (for the average person) artwork, and the fact that if you don't want to partake in the wine tastings, you can't even grab a coffee from the high school canteen, I mean, cafe (described as such because again, a space devoid of appeal and much like the atmosphere of a hospital cafe) one level below and take it up to join the rest of your group. Why? I have no idea. Nonsensical though, much like this disconnected (in every sense of the word) building and I can understand why there was so much pushback from the community in getting planning to build it in the first place.

The only positive I can think of is that quite contrary to my last sentence above, the quirkiness of the outside of the Cube has a vague appeal, in keeping with Chester's eccentric and vivacious personality that makes you curious as to what's inside, much like Alice in Wonderland (an obvious inspiration along with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) - but that's it unfortunately. The outside offers promise and excitement that is totally absent inside.

Sorry Chester, but ultimately, it's a big no from me (us). I'll stick to the traditional Verandah everyday of the week!

Hi Kaz, We appreciate you taking the time to outline your view of the Cube. We agree that d'Arry's is a wonderful showcase of regional produce and traditional hospitality and it is lovely to hear that you have enjoyed your experiences there and will continue in the future. The Cube is a juxtaposition of that energy. A quirky, eccentric journey into Chester's mind, wine, geology, art and family history. A true feast for the senses. It is disappointing to hear that you didn't connect with the internal space, however with all art we understand that it is a subjective experience. Thank you for your visit and we look forward to welcoming you to the restaurant soon.

This was an unexpected great experience. From the wonderful woman helping taste wine to the cafe and Dali exhibition, this was a fantastic morning. Bizarre as it may seem, do not miss going down the stairs and using the toilets!! The most extraordinary toilets I have ever seen!! In a good way. Do not miss this winery if you visit the McLaren Vale

Given that The Cube is on every SA Tourism brochure/ website etc, we thought that we must go. The building is stunning in its vineyard location and the views are lovely as long as you look at tree level and above, the winery buildings, roads, Carpark’s etc mar the overall aspect. $15 entrance fee for a taste of 5 very ordinary wines from a fellow who spoke like a robot was underwhelming, as were the exhibition spaces with in the building. But if you like quirky then maybe it’s your thing? We had lunch in the casual restaurant which was fine and the coffees were good. Glad we went but would not return.

Hi MadamJosephine, Thank you for your honest feedback. The views over the vineyards are truly lovely and we are glad to hear that you enjoyed them and the coffee. It is disappointing to hear that you found the wines ordinary and the experience in the tasting room underwhelming. We do understand that wine is subjective and hope you were able to let the team know during your visit so that we could find something suitable to your palate. We would love to welcome you back if you do ever decide to give us another chance.

This place has really gone downhill and becoming too touristy and commercial. We have been members for over 15 years and was quite disappointed with what we experience this week. We idd get our complimentary entry which was good as I would not pay to go to taste the wines. Our wine presenter looked bored and clearly was not interested in us. It was busy but he still showed very little interest, I asked him a question and he walked off while I was asking it!
Member perks were private tasting rooms and when we asked about this he mumbled something unintelligible and I am still not sure what was said. He then asked me to fill out a form for the purchase of wines something I also have never done, luckily another wine presenter came to my rescue and said this was not needed. I am not sure if he even knew or cared about what he was doing.
On our way home we dropped into Angoves which is just next door and had a much nicer experience. Do yourself a favour and go there instead for a lovely tasting experience and wines.
I would go and see the cube but the wines are no longer worth it and the service terrible, though we might have lucked out with our server.

Spectacular building in the middle of vineyards. Men’s toilet is a must see. 😂. Dali exhibition belongs to the visit. Wine was as expected not that great. This is more commercial, where wine itself looses it’s quality, but the building and art gallery stands out. Certainly a must visit, but not worth buying or tasting wines.

Certainly worth visiting, it is an architecturally stunning structure that seems to be out of place in a vineyard but somehow works.

Nice views from the Cube and good photo pops of it from the grounds: however, there is a fairly hefty entry fee to go inside and it gets crowded. Museum/galleries on the lower floors with wine tasting at the top- for which you pay an additional charge. We found the wines we tried very good and our wine tasting hostess was pleasant.

All a bit slick, commercial and touristy though.

This place is amazing. Great wine tasting, but the whole experience is something else! Quirky, interesting sights at every turn. Definitely recommend!!! And the morning tea was fab!

We did the Dead Arm Tasting and then went to Pollys Cafe. The tasting was generous to say the least. Quality shiraz and good service. Then down to the cafe. I had the Reuben sandwich and my wife had the smoked salmon on rye. Both were top shelf. The ambience in the cafe is great and the staff were attentive without being intrusive. Great views and a group of finches perched just outside the window by our table. Great entertainment. The furniture in the cafe looks to have been upholstered from court jesters suits, very colourful. Well worth a visit for a casual lunch.

Chester Osborn from d'Arenberg Cube stretches your imagination - the mens toilet is worth visiting (for everyone). Salvador Dali inspired ambiance in areas, the alternate realities in the museum are an amazement.
With complexities and puzzles of winemaking, Chester created the idea of a cube-shaped building and presented the idea to architects.
Apart from great wine & food, panoramic view, I found lots of interesting features in this winery.
The guide was knowledgeable and helpful.
A visit to McLaren Vale would be incomplete without visiting the cube.
